That’s great to hear. You will have the time of your life building this car ! As I’m getting near the end, I’m realizing that I’ll be close to a year in it from start to finish. Which is crazy, because it feels like half that. Enjoy the build!

Off camera I did do a guide coat to test my sanding technique. What I found is that I was able to see the difference in the scratch pattern enough to serve as a guide coat.

Ha! Glad I can help. I’ve relied on so many other videos getting up to this point, glad I can return the favor to some. Ain’t going to lie, painting was a bit stressful. Painting two different colors (gunmetal grey on some parts and brown on the body) was tricky to orchestrate.

@@rbyikesThe cutting and buffing took some time, but well worth it. The one thing I'll say that I'm glad I did is putting in a push and pull fan in my spray tent. The predictable air flow greatly reduced the overspray and I think contributed to the basecoat laying as smoothly as it did. The orange peel was just me not laying thick enough coats of the clear-- I was too afraid of runs and sags that I went too lightly.

Thats funny. It may have been the same color. As far as I can tell, the last time they used this color was mid 80's. Porsche actually brought it back in 2022 (or thereabouts) on their 911. I've been working on the orange peel. It actually seems pretty easy to get through. I practiced on my test panel (practiced spraying each step on a piece of sheet metal) and I started with 1000 grit wet, then to 2000 wet, then to 3000 wet, and finished up with rubbing compound. The test panel is as smooth as can be after not much work. Lets hope this translates to the car!

Ha! Yes, I’m assuming it feels closer to the end than it really is. However, doing final assembly will likely feel differently knowing I’m not going to need to take things apart again for paint.

Yes, I've always liked the idea of doing a more "earthy" tone color for this car. This particular one is a Porsche color called Tobacco Brown. Its funny how a different color without the stripes completely changes the feel of the car.
