When you drive one of these, you're like a rockstar. People are always waving at you, giving you the thumbs up. People recognize them just like I did. They recognize them from the '60s when they were super popular, and Carroll Shelby was racing them, and various movie stars had them. I mean, there's songs about them.
My name is Paul Borror. This is my Factory Five Mk4 Roadster Cobra Replica.
Autoblog obsessively covers the auto industry. We are a trusted source of auto research, information, and automotive issues.

I was already a Cobra replica owner when FFR came on the scene. Many of us former upscale replica owners looked down on the FFR as in the beginning they were kind of crude. Today I am no longer a Cobra owner but I consider the FFR the top brand of build it yourself replicas. There are a couple of overpriced and probably better than the original Cobras but those are geared more to those show guys who can't really build a replica but they can afford a full factory built copy. I was more geared towards track days and IMO FFR has developed replicas that can out handle/perform the show car replicas and even the originals with today much better engines coming from Ford and others. To me the optimal engine right now is the Coyote as this fine example has installed. Beautiful car, keep up the good work.

Thanks for sharing! I finished a MK4 solo build last year and can confirm your observation that the process definitely produces a custom built car. It was a pleasure working with FFR-Dave Smith is laser focused on helping customers get on the road as soon as possible. Mine took 14 mo. to get on the road, then after sorting out for a month or two, it got disassembled for paint. Your interior is gorgeous! Car is totally professional. great work! john wilson

I can see why you did the car 3 times. I built a Factory Five 33 a few years ago with the help of a few friends. It turned out very nice but after you drive it a while, there are a number of things I wished I did differently plus new options come along that were not available at the time of the build. To me it was a great experience worth the time and effort.

Hi Paul, Awesome build and a great video presentation. I have just finished my own Factory Five MKIV, and am super excited to get it rolling.I see you had the interior mirror attached to the windshield. I like to do the same for a better rear view since I mounted the Kirkey racing seats that are much taller than the FF ones. Was it the mirror that came with the kit, and where did you get the mounting bracket? There are holes on the windshield frame.Did you have to drill new ones? I also noticed the exterior mirrors. Where did you get them?
@paulborror2544
@paulborror2544 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheOcular That is the kit provided mirror with a bracket attached to the existing slot in the top of the windshield. Unfortunately, the company that made the bracket is no longer in business. Would be easy to fabricate though. Just a flat plate from 1/4-inch aluminum. The side mirrors that attach to the wind wings are from here: www.breezeautomotive.com/shop/sideview-mirror-set-4-polished-billet-aluminum-made-in-usa/.

Great video. I am looking right now for an FF AC Cobra but the struggle is finding one with the Coyote. Much like the LS, Ford hit a home run with the Coyotes. They will take anything, extremely capable of putting power down, and almost bulletproof bottom ends. I have built a few cars in my life, but much like you; This one is a childhood dream. I will have one withing the next 6 months, just looking for the right one with the Coyote and the Kelsey Hayes touches.

Drove my Cobra replica for 10 years and yes, lots of curiosity about it from other road users! But back in the day of the Cobra 1962 - 1967 or so, there were in fact so few sold, around 1000 only between the 289 slabside (655) and the 427 models (343), that people then would rarely if ever see one on the road! If Shelby and AC Cars in England had ever got near the numbers of replicas in existence - 70 000 estimated - then the Cobra would have been one of the biggest selling real performance machines of all time!

These don't have any true "classic car" value if that's what you're asking. Like what an original of any make would have when it falls into that category. They are similar to other hobby cars, hot rods, etc. Can't be viewed as an investment. Value will be in what the market bears. A nice one might make the material cost back.

I love the car, specially the twin rollover bars made me watch this video. How much total from start to finish vis a vis money, time and upkeep?
@paulborror2544
@paulborror2544 3 жыл бұрын
You can go to Factory Five's website and price out a kit. Complete kit has everything except engine, trans, rear suspension components (varies depending on what type you build), and wheels/tries. Your total is going to depend on how much you spend for each. Then add paint and any customization. Factory Five says several hundred hours to build. Unless you're experienced, that's low. Again, totally up to you. I don't own this car any longer, but the several seasons I drove it only required usual automotive maintenance. Oil changes, etc. With new and modern components it was very reliable.
@SinnerSince1962

I like everything except the fog lights buried behind the billet bar grill in the front.
@paulborror2544
@paulborror2544 Жыл бұрын
Agree some like it, some don't. It's a popular mod to do something with that opening rather than leaving it empty. For the originals, that opening was for an oil cooler. Not often installed on these builds. There was a vendor selling that particular setup with the fog lights so you'll see it on others.

In your recent kits did you go with the complete kit that included the suspension? What mods was needed if you did? I am currently in research mode, highly interested in their hot rod pick up kit. I'd rather get the complete kit due to suspension already engineered and from what I can see you can pretty much build a roller then drop your power plant in. Your build looks amazing, thanks for the video.
@paulborror2544
@paulborror2544 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I've done both base kits and complete kits. But never with a donor. Even with a base kit, there are relatively few suspension parts that aren't included. Over the years, Factory Five has engineered and provided parts that are superior to donor parts. Your best bet is to study their website. It does a good job of explaining what is included with each kit. I'm actually building their Hot Rod Truck right now. About 50% complete at this point. It's only available as a complete kit. Includes everything except engine, transmission, rear end with rear brakes, wheels and tires, paint, battery, and fuel pump. Multiple drivelines are supported. Also multiple options available.

SUPERFORMANCE is the only way to go! Mine are titled as a 1965 Shelby Cobra. State Farm insures it for a whopping $24 per month based on the purchase value of the car. I total the car. I get what I paid for the car plus a little extra.

Superformance is another great choice. Especially if you have no desire to build it yourself. But titling these cars varies between states. In Michigan, Superformance is titled as assembled vehicle in the year of the title application. Just like the Factory Five in this video.
