I have a 2010 extended V8, and it was a rare find, bought it new. Almost gave up trying to find one when I was looking because everyone had the Crew Cab. Lucked out and even got the color (Inferno Orange Metallic) I wanted, and I doubt I will ever sell it. 11 yrs old and only 55k miles, plus I have heard too many dislikes about the 2nd Gen Colorado so not looking to trade up, and doubt it would be a trade up.

I’ve got a 2012 extended cab Z71 4WD with the 5.3L and factory 4.10 gears, it’s AWESOME. I’ve hopped mine up a bit, and it’s genuinely pretty fast and is an awesome camping rig. Total shame they didn’t make them from the beginning, I believe they would’ve sold a LOT of them. By the way, the 2011 and 2012 5.3 engine code was LH9, the earlier one was LH8. My truck gets an average of 17 mpg, 15 in town or on country roads and 19-22 on the highway depending on speed (it loves 60 mph, not so much 75) with 275/65r18 Goodyear Duratracs on it. Couldn’t ask for a better truck. Mine’s immaculate at 67,000 miles, being an enthusiast-owned lifelong California truck (I live in West Virginia and take great care to keep it clean and under oiled and such). Yours is super clean, too, nice job keeping it that way.
@philofab
@philofab 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For some reason mine doesn't get that good of highway mileage but I normally drive at 80 mph.
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 3 жыл бұрын
@@philofab I think my Black Bear 91+ tune helped some, as I only averaged 18.2 on the drive home from California. Also, I never exceed 75 for more than a mile or two and run 60-65 on a lot of my camping trips along 2-lane highways. It gets 22 or a touch over at 60, but probably 16 at 80 with those 4.10s. I also always got 1-3 mpg better on 93 or 94 octane even before the tune, I guess since mine’s flex fuel it actually did make a difference. I’m probably going to kill it some with a Texas Speed stage 2 VCT truck cam, but it’ll be worth it, haha!

@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryublackz4 Maybe in 20 years when it’s got 200,000 miles and gas is $20 a quart, haha! You can find them if you look, though. Usually Crew Cab with 3.42s, though extended cab with 4.10s is the fastest and therefore more common than you would think. They built 2WD ZQ8s with the V8, too, and those are arguably cooler.

Nice truck! I have the same year 4x4 Z71 but with the Atlas 3.7 and 4 door. IDK man, I don't understand why the 5 cylinder wasn't more appreciated. IMO, it's underrated. I've put 184,000 on it so far and have had zero issues with it. Towed, hauled, and go off-road with it often. Still starts and runs like a top. I will say though, I've done all my own work on it since new from 6 miles. lol. I get 22-24 mpg highway with 3.73's. So yea, I bet it is 4:10's on yours. They ruined them imo after the re-design...

Wow! I had no idea that they had offered these with the 5.3, and I didn't even know they made them till 2012. Honestly I kind of forgot that these even existed. I honestly kind of thought they were a half-ass effort on GM's part, I think the Nissan's and the Toyotas of the same vintage were probably better trucks. This one's a whole different ballgame though now that I know that they're out there with 5.3s I want one! Btw, I just watched your video review of the Cooper tires, that came up in a search I was doing on them, and I saw the V8 fender badge and I was like I have to investigate this further! Lol. Awesome truck man, nice find. Oh, and as far as the drum brakes in the rear, the Toyota Tacoma was designed as a new truck for 2016 and STILL has drum brakes in the rear, haha.

@EnkiMMXII 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if this was an easy swap. Mine tows every day for work. LS runs strong but that 4L60 is just not a heavy duty trans. I don't blame GM, as they weren't meant to be a heavy duty work truck, but that's what I want. Are there any other considerations when stepping up to the 80? Custom driveshaft I'm guessing?

This truck looks awesome with a V8 and it is the same body of Isuzu DMax in other markets. That is a real compact truck. We had imported grey market Tacoma too, they look so wide than longer than the local Hilux. It is not some Americanized "compact" truck that looks almost as big as 1500 of todays Colorado and Rangers.

I have a GMC Canyon (2005) with the 3.5 engine. It has 138K miles, seems to run very good to be fair. I changed the plugs, cleaned the MAF sensor, and the throttle body. Replaced the radiator, it was the original. I found the power steering fluid was empty, it was making noise, added enough to top it off, works great. Had the muffler and exhaust replaced with a Flowmaster Super 40. Good tone and strong engine sound. Maybe others with the problems on these engines live in harsher climates, or have maintenance not done on time.

The main issue with Atlas motors is the timing and balance chains, which I would think high rpm and oil changes are the only things that affect the life of them. I've actually been trying to find a 5 cylinder to play with for a project.

@@hansfranklin5070 I think the cylinder head recall was applied to the truck I purchased second (fourth) hand. I looked up the recalls, specific to my V.I.N. and it is all compliant. I looked for rebuilt, JEG's, etc., and replacement engine is easily obtained for half of what I bought this truck. I will just drive it until it dies at this point. I would like to do a V8 swap, but that is not really worth it. It will take away the good MPG, for one, and not be original secondly.

Yea, when we were comparing it to the few other small trucks on the market it was surprising the lack of options other trucks had and how most were much larger than Rangers and the 1st Gen Colorado. @RSAW73
@RSAW73 7 ай бұрын
No they don't have AFM. The newer LH9 has VVT, which is reliable and can easily be deleted, if necessary. Still made 300HP/320TQ with VVT, but lost 5 ft/lbs of peak torque as they added valve reliefs in the pistons for VVT, so the engine lost almost .5 point of compression and strangely kept the same cam. Looking for one of these little beasts myself.

Spectre XIII If it’s a 115+ out I have to idle it up to cool it off. It’s never overheated but the gauge starts climbing a little. I’ve though about adding a electric fan on the front of the radiator or just changing to electric fans all together.

@@philofab Mine will absolutely heat soak idling when it's over 115. The highest I let it get was 244, and while the truck didn't seem to mind, I was uneasy. Got the gauge up to 3/4 at that temp. Fan locked in, not enough engine speed at idle. I've been eyeballing supermodulation fan kit or pcmofnc fan kit.

I think next time I plug the HPTuner in I will increase the hot idle on my truck a little. I like the supermodulation fan but I don't really want any of his wiring. I should probably see if he will sell once separate if he's still around. If not I'll just stick to my plan of adding a auxiliary pusher fan to the front.

I use Diablo for my tuning and went up 150 rpm idle, getting a little more engine speed without it lurching you forward. James Supermod is still around. He's on facebook as well under the 355nation group. I'm going to check out the other kit, though.

It took me almost a year to find this one. Funny thing is that a 2011 crew cab 4wd V8 Colorado got traded into the same dealership a week after I bought it. They are out there but most of the time they are not listed with the correct engine online. Always check the vin or look for the V8 fender emblem.

Toyota Tacoma's twice the price. Pretty easy to rebuilt the transmission in these, and the motors are everywhere lol. Or just spend the money now and not worry about it later. But yeah these are cool little trucks with a good V-8. The interiors though are God awful.
