It's very scary that they're showing up dead by the thousands. My kids and I went to sunset Beach in Santa Cruz California today to celebrate mother's Day. There were at least 200 thousand of these all over the beach. Dead. I've never seen this in my life. This is happening all over. I encourage you to look it up. They're such beautiful creatures. And there were a lot of dead birds as well.

Beautiful and graceful little creatures. Velella velella are rarely highlighted; one can find 100s of videos or writings about colonial organisms like the Portuguese man o war and quite a bit about siphonophores etc. Nice to find an upload like this :)

They're currently washing ashore in Southern California beaches right now. All dried up now. We only found one "baby" one still alive.

A few years ago I was sardine seining off the coast of Oregon and there were millions of these floating around. I'd say billions bit I feel that would be an exaggeration. But there was a lot of them. Great fishing too. It was the year of the El Nino. So many of them were washed up on the shore too. I've never seen anything like that. There were also these floating pink things also. They looks like women's "pleasure" toys. Sorry can't think of a different way of describing it haha. But it had these spikes on them but they were really soft like jelly. Crazy stuff out there.

These were all over our beech once a couple years ago. I collected a couple from the beech, at Lincoln City,OR. They dried, but now I've only kept the picture I took. I hunted online to find out what it was. Like little sail boats!
