Talented people, WHEN THEY’RE IN CHARGE, are often rather NUTS when they’re not in front of an audience. But the professionals around the Star would put up with it, and in Lucy’s case, for two reasons: 1. Everyone on the set shared her interest in making the best product possible, although not necessarily to the over-the-top extent Lucy did. BUT… 2. Lucy OWNED the place! At least she DID, lock, stock and Klieglights [although the majority of those were actually made by Mole-Richardson] after the Ball/Arnaz divorce. Before that, she CO-owned it all with Desi. Lucille Ball’s NAME was in the title of the show(s), so she absolutely had a stake in the quality of that product And it’s interesting you termed her re-staging of a scene without the Director being there as “like a factory foreman”. Between Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue studios of Desilu (located in the Southwest corner of the Paramount Pictures lot), and the Culver City “Forty Acres” Desilu lot, Desilu Productions was indeed a TV factory. Just look at the sheer number of TV shows that came out of their facilities besides “I Love Lucy”, “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” - The Untouchables, Whirlybirds, The Danny Thomas Show, Wyatt Earp, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Hogan’s Heroes, and BOTH Star Trek pilots (and many of the episodes), just to name a very few. There were MANY more. When Lucy got tired of being a Studio Mogul, she sold the whole kit and kaboodle to Paramount Pictures, and was quite happy NOT to be responsible for the shows that were in production at the time, not to mention all the details, big and small, of running a Studio. She could finally relax a bit, letting someone else worry about all those things. Then all she had to concern herself with were the shows with her name in the titles (as if that wasn’t enough!). An amazing lady, to be sure.🩷

I Loved that esp. knowing that Benny and Ball were next door neighbors and friends for decades. Once a guest said when they were eating dinner, Jack came in playing his violin, walked around the table continued to play and left, without saying a word! One time they were in a scene together both playing the violin. She looked so good, one did not know that she couldn't play the violin -- but it was all mimicked - down to precise finger movements. Darn it was perfect or almost, apparently someone picked up the that the music continued on a few seconds and Lucy was no longer moving her fingers. The person who made the comment had played the violin for years and said she was so good - that up to the end he did not realized that she was acting.

She was a pioneer for women in the high level of business, Hollywood, showmanship and all done in a total man’s world. She saved an empire when Desi was distracted. She skill was magical and brought ground breaking topics to TV audience. A pregnant woman on TV was considered a NO No and yet she and Desi made it work. Time is short in the day, so she was blunt and working with folks who may not have understood the magnitude of the media. We all benefited from her work, skill and talent. Real slackers exist now and the lack of skill, talent and thought that big busts are your job skill is our sad reality.

Lucie Arnaz once said her mother was not a funny woman. She was a ruthless business woman who did what she had to do to get a show on the air. But look at the product she produced and how long it lasted...25 years. A rarity in the industry. I’m surprised this video didn’t mention the difficulty Elizabeth Taylor had on the “Here’s Lucy” set when she made her iconic appearance with her then husband Richard Burton. That was well documented. Most “difficult” people have the best end product. Look at Barbra Streisand. Richard Marx once commented that she can be troublesome if you come into her world unprepared. Yet Streisand has been a force for over 60 years. Vivian Vance and Gale Gordon must have adapted well to Ball’s style. They remained with her through the years and never complained about her. Lucille Ball knew what she wanted and what her audience wanted and she gave it to them and Lucy was loved.

She just knew what she wanted. She and Desi preferred to run each show straight through, like a play. So as it were, they wanted to get everything perfect and would do whatever it took to achieve that. However, she adored the people she worked with, and would always use the same actors in all her various tv shows. She’d never accept an award without naming them… she never considered herself a one woman show.

Lucy and Richard Burton did not get along on set because he was an alcoholic - came late to rehearsals, didn't know his lines and looked down on anyone trying to get him up to speed. In his last films he rehearsed while sitting down or lying down - too drunk to stand up - hence he died at 58 from complications due to alcoholism. BTW the Burtons asked Lucy to be on the show - most expensive ever - plus one of the best received. The reviews were over the top.

Gale Gordon and Lucy were friends for over 30 years; they got along well and really loved each other. Lucy and Vivian were friends - I think Vivian was not easy to get along with either - she initiated the conflict with Wm Frawley, which did not change in the 6 seasons of the show. Vivian got married 4x and the last marriage worked, but he was gay. Lucy loved Desi a lot but he was an addict: booze, women and gambling; his second wife almost divorced him too. Lucy ended up starring and producing The Lucy Show as well as running Desilu Studios. (She had to buy Desi out as the studio was losing money) After a few years when Desilu was doing well, she sold it for 17 million. I am going on a lot, but damn I really admired her fortitude and ability to keep things going, do well by the kids, and save the studio from bankruptcy. That's a heck of a lot on anyone's plate!

Let me comment on 3 people who Lucy did not get along with on her show: Richard Burton, Tallulah Bankhead and Joan Crawford. They had one thing in common: they were alcoholics - came on set late, didn't know their lines, and there was conflict, Burton in particular had a really big ego - and how dare a tv comedian tell him what to do. However, with each person Tallulah, Burton, Crawford - a really good show came out of it. Only Burton was a mean drunk and was really nasty about Lucy. He was used to while working on his last few films, sitting down or lying down while rehearsing - he could not stand up. He died from complications of alcoholism at 58. Joan said something funny - after they were on set together - And they call me a *itch! and Tallulah was very positive about meeting and working with Lucy. However, she did have the last laugh. Tallulah had Lucy so anxious about how she was going to perform that Lucy was off, and Tallulah gave an A+ performance!

Rob Reiner was hired as a guest on The Lucy Show. He shared that Desi Arnez really blew his top at him because in a scene during rehearsals Reiner improvised. When Desi Sr. landed on the shores of Miami at age 16 - he had finish two years of high school, earn a living and when he graduated, his father divorced his mother and Desi had to support her for the rest of his life. Lucy found her way to NYC at age 15 had no money and no connections - finally got into modeling so she could eat and send home money to help support her family, which she did till both her mgf and mother died. Early on, she also supported her brother Fred who was 4 years younger and her cousin Cleo.

God I feel like a Lucy apologist but I have never liked Liz Taylor. She stole her best friend's husband (Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, who had children); but Liz was lonely cause Michael Todd was killed in an airplane crash the year before. It just about ruined Fisher's career but enhanced Liz Taylor's in that she could get any man she wanted. After that, she met Burton on the set of Cleopatra - goodbye Fisher hello Burton, who was married with several children. Same show, different day. Again, only + publicity. Taylor also was an alcoholic and was into drugs. I finally saw something positive in her when she went to The Betty Ford Clinic and admitted her substance abuses, which like Betty Ford, gave women permission to speak up about their issues. Also at that time, Liz Taylor became a major spokesperson for research in and treatment for AIDS. In those two ways I truly found her admirable. However in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe", which Burton and Taylor brilliantly acted in - it seemed like a window into their real lives.

You cannot create that much work on film and be nice. She had a very harsh childhood with many cruel disappointments and family tragedies. The legend of I Love Lucy proves that she was right about comedy on film. Show business has no room for crybabies.

I agree - also Vivian Vance was in abusive marriage as the other two marriages and she and Bill Frawley were antagonist toward each other. Plus not only Desi was a cheater he was also an alcoholic (as was Frawley) and he began acting out (on the set) by1955. However, the Fabulous Four created I Love Lucy, the best tv sit com I have ever seen. Love Lucille Ball, she had an incredibly difficult life growing up, and made music out of sadness. Each one of these performers had issues but created greatness together.

I think she could be a witch & put a b on the witch word too.probably all the infidelity Desi put her though was a facture in her personality. After all how much can a woman take. He lied about his constant cheating & then he would tell her it didn't mean anything to him.women thought he was so georgous .personally I never thought he was anything special at all as far as looks. But he was talented & knew his craft extremely well. 73 yrs when I love Lucy started & still going strong what a beautiful legacy💝 just to bad their marriages didn't last. @@FactsVerse There are so many great “I Love Lucy” episodes that’s it’s hard to choose just one. Instead, I’ll choose some that I love that may not get mentioned that often by other fans (in no particular order): 1) The episode where Lucy tries to sneak the cheese on the airplane is absolutely brilliant, hilarious and perfectly executed. 2) The one where Lucy and Ethel buy a freezer and then accidentally buy what seems to be a whole cow of beef. 3) The episode when Lucy pretends to go on a hunger strike in Paris so that Ricky will buy her a new dress. Again, this episode showed the brilliance of the writers and the entire cast. The Lucy Show had some absolutely hilarious episodes, and unlike many fans my favorites aren’t necessarily in the first season, for instance the episode where Lucy and Viv are competitors in a baking contest and of course their rivalry gets the best of them. The one where Lucy poses as an aid in the hospital to secure Mr. Mooney’s signature for a loan. The scene where the hospital staff is chasing Lucy in the wheelchair is flat out hysterical. Then there’s the episode where Lucy looses her contact lens in a cake that she’s baked for Mrs. Mooney. Also the episode where Lucy and Viv are cooks at the boys camp, and Harvey Korman is the camp leader. Anytime you put Lucy and Viv in the kitchen together, it was comedy gold. Those episodes imho, rival some of the best episodes of “I Love Lucy”. When you’re watching The Lucy Show you especially relish the first two and half seasons with Vivian Vance because you’re aware of how awful the ensuing seasons will be. What made the Lucy Ricardo character enjoyable is that not only was the initial premise for each episode believable, the character was clever and resourceful. By the same token in the first few seasons of The Lucy Show, the premise for each episode was believable, and while the Lucy Carmichael character was not quite as clever as Lucy Ricardo, she was crafty. However, the later iterations of the Lucy character were an adult who was simply dumb, often not displaying the intelligence of an older child. The situations were contrived for any desperate attempt for a laugh via some ridiculous sight gag. One week you had Lucy being a meter maid. The next week she was an airline stewardess. The next week she was a stuntman in a movie . The following week she’s back to working in the bank. An absolute disaster of a show.

I don't mind a no-nonsense leader. Plus, at the time of I LOVE LUCY, I think it's fair to say that Lucy was going through a lot of inner turmoil with her crumbling marriage. I don't think her and Vivian Vance would have struck up a lifelong bond had Lucy been such a difficult, temper-throwing, control freak.

Lucille Ball became controlling once Desi Arnaz was out of the picture. She knew she had to take over because it was her "arse" that was on the line, not only for the success of the show, but due to her position and value to CBS. One of the things that outsider may not realize is that in a "glamor profession" such as this, there are a number of talent and capable people as well as a lot of mediocre people who managed to "skate through" on the coat tails of others. They had poor work habits and would not be prepared. In an environment where a show has to be done in five days, a great deal of organization is necessary in order to have an efficient production. That's why people needed to be on their toes with Lucille Ball. Aside from doing her show, she was also running Desilu. So her time was very precious. In spite of the outward "fun," this was a serious business. But it worked. They completed a show before a live audience within an hour or so. Now I understand the filming for live audience shows can go as late as from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. That is an example of the contrast in professionalism and work ethic.

This isn't new news. I've heard Lucy was difficult for over a decade. We seem to forget to credit writers and directors for their work. We tend to focus on actors. I believe even Lucy stated she wasn't funny. She is just able to ACT. We often ignore these people as individuals. But rather as their characters. Yes, she has a lot of power behind the scenes. But, she didn't write everything she ever said. She wasn't improv. Realistically, she only really did one thing in all her shows. Which, as a thinking man. Gets old. Don't get me wrong. I can enjoy her show. But, only periodically. As it's a ton of sameness. Which, would make sense. If she wasn't naturally funny. She may not be able to expand her comedy. And it was easier to just do the same thing since it worked anyway. Except her later years. Where she has some failures. Perhaps, Bec of her age or people finally getting a bit burned out for the sameness of it all. Plus, she couldn't do the physical humor as well as her health failed. Mind you, I am someone that watched a TON of tv. And can easily predict shows. Which, makes me harder to please than others. That may be able to turn it off. (Their mind) and just enjoy the show. This is partly my own fault as I am always on the defense. As well as a way to keep myself from being suspectable to propaganda. Which is often used in TV. Not specifically, talking about Lucy's shows. But, definitely in other shows. Over the last 30 years or even now.

Certain information that may darken their images and reputation should remain insider info and not made public. Think about it, who gives a flying fku?!
