From Jimmy Hendrix to Kurt Cobain and Elvis Presley, what it boils down to is if you're a rock star, the chances of your life coming to a quick and sudden end are exponentially greater than the average joe.
That being said, not every famous musician goes out in such a dramatic way. Some stars end up fading gradually as their lives slowly crumble around them.
In this video, we're going to be discussing a musical star that was quite possibly one of the most interesting musicians of all time - Sammy Davis Jr. Sadly, the way he left this world was far from what he deserved.
Sammy overcame racism to establish himself as a legend! He became a successful comedian, dancer, actor, and singer. And as a part of the notorious Rat Pack alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, he became known for starring in films such as Sergeants 3 and Ocean's 11.
Even though he amassed a great deal of wealth throughout his life, by the time of his death, Sammy Davis Jr. was completely penniless. Not only that, but he had also lost one of his eyes in a horrific accident that nearly killed him years prior.

An incandescent talent for the ages. Met him as a child in an orphanage. He sang for us and danced. Afterwords he sat among us and just had fun. I still miss a man I only met once.

Possibly one of the best entertainers of his time. Not only was he multitalented (singing, dancing, impressions, acting, comedy), he broke down some racial barriers with the assistance of his 'rat pack' friends. A real icon.😢

Not a glass eye. An artificial eye, or ocular prosthetic. Glass eyes stopped being produced in 1939. Sammy Davis Jr was fitted with an ocular prosthetic in 1954, which is actually made of dental prosthetic material. My husband is an artificial eye maker, an Ocularist. Glass has not been used for over 80 years. Please stop calling them glass eyes.

Before he died , he lived in the best places and ate the best of foods and traveled the world countless times. He lived the life of a multi-millionaire. The IRS didn’t bother him while he lived. They came for everything after he died. Sammy lived. His friend Frank Sanatra gave his wife one million dollars after he died. RIP Sammy, one of the World’s greatest entertainers.

I had the privilege of seeing Sammy Davis Jr perform live at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA, while he was at the peak of his game. The Circle Star was co-owned by Frank Sinatra. Sammy was WONDERFUL! I always loved him and cried when he passed. It pained me that he worked so hard to get whites to accept him. His wife Altovise instilled greater self-respect in Sammy toward the end of his life. None finer. None so talented since.

@@onlythewise1 unfortunately, he was under the delusion that the colorless were something special, mainly because that’s what they’ve always promoted in their hateful, dwindling society. Sammy was simply misinformed. The “darks” always accepted him, even when he didn’t have the good sense and self pride to accept himself. That’s just how the “darks” roll.

Sammy's "The Wham Of Sam" from 1961 is the must-have album. It matches Frank's "Songs For Swingin' Lovers" for sheer style and joy. A great entertainer. When he died, Frank paid for his funeral. Nancy Sinatra said her father's slow decline started after Sammy passed away. A class act.

An uncle who introduced me to people like Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Ella and others when I was still at school, took me to see Sammy at the Prince of Wales theatre in 1962. I was 15, as we came out he asked me, ' well, what did you think?' I couldn't reply as I was dumbfounded, left speechless by the most fantastic performance ever. This diminutive, ball of energy, with an irrepressible electricity was simply unforgettable. Sammy's telepathic rapport with Drummer Michael Silva ,his Marlon Brando et other impressions, but especially his phenomenal dancing left a memory etched in me forever. After that, whenever I heard he'd be back in LONDON, I'd book to see him. My only concern, was that he smoked incessantly on stage. When his book 'Yes I can ' came out I immediately bought it , there's a chapter where he describes how Nat King Cole is struck down with throat cancer, but he never cut down, and his cigarettes were the longest I've seen. A complex,insecure individual, but an undoubted Genius!!

On the "Fantasy Island" soundstage set (probably in the early 80s) Sammy was a guest star and the Property Master had a beautiful custom Peacemaker Colt SAA revolver for him. Sammy was delighted with the revolver, which he intended to use in his Vegas act with Jerry Lewis and did a lot of gun twirling tricks with it for all of us on the crew. WOW, was he great! I honestly didn't imagine that such fast draws and twirling tricks were even possible!

My favorite memory of Sammy Davis jr was when he guest starred on an episode of All in The Family. Sammy was one of the very few people that Archie would let sit in his chair and their conversation while Sammy waited for his brief case to be returned was timeless. Oh, and let’s not forget him kissing Archie on the cheek right before the camera flash went off. Sammy could be outright hilarious when he wanted to be 😅

It was Frank Sinatra that flew to Sammy , got him a good hospital, and took him to Franks' house in the desert to recuperate. Frank taught Sammy how to regain his balance by swimming and exercising in his pool.

I met Sammy years ago at a HEART fund raiser in Bloomington, Minnesota at a dinner club called the Carlton I believe. I photographer friend was hired do the shoot, and asked me if I wanted to go along. After Sammy gave his all in his performance, the curtain came down and I could see him just about drop when he was clearly out of sight. He gave it his all. People rush up to him after his performance, and I turned to my friend and said that... with all those people, we don't stand a chance of seeing him... Sammy heard me and told his body guard (?) that he wanted to see us in his dressing room.😍 WOW!!! I gushed with the usual, "I think you're great Mr. Davis," "I've been a long time fan..." ...But what do you say to a super icon??? So, instead of continuing my stupid act,... I thanked him for seeing us, and left him to get some privacy and rest. I recently found out that Sammy was a freemasonite, and an Alistair Crawley supporter. This saddened me deeply. I think the man was an astounding talent!!! Even as a tap dancing little boy!

I have several favorite Sammy Davis, Jr. television appearances..."All in The Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place." An appearance on an episode of "Fantasy Island" was especially touching. The segment was entitled "Michael," where Davis was a magazine publisher who sought to make amends to the people he wronged on his way to the top...they included a woman whom he loved, but married another woman from a wealthy family instead and his adult son. Michael admitted that he'd never told anyone in his life that he loved them, not even his own mother. Michael was able to make amends to his true love and his son and was ready to leave Fantasy Island, but Mr. Roarke told him that he had one more person to make amends with...his late mother (played by Esther Rolle), where he was finally able to tell her that he loved her; which was all she ever needed.

Came here from watching him doing a nice goofy skit on Hullaballoo with The Animals in which Sammy was able to do his Rex Harrison impression. (My Fair Lady had just been released) The Rain in Spain and a riff on how the English group spoke with a very stong and distinctly un-Rex Harrison accent. Great fun. He would have been only 40. He was very helpful to The Animals and other English bands that came over as part of the British Invasion in the 60's. I think he let them stay in one of his houses.

LOL, Long ago when I was about 10/11 I was flying to London with My Parents. Since the Front Cabin was basically empty, Me & Mom (Dad was in the Cockpit) and a Bunch of 'hollywood people'. By this time in life I was accustomed to seeing famous people on airplanes. Well, the Other Group was Mr Davis and His wife Altovise. Mrs Davis complemented my Mom, stating that they did not even notice that there was a Young Child on board. LSS, My DAD came down and basically told me I HAD to go and say hello to Mr & Mrs Davis, they were very nice, and Mr Davis asked me what book I was so absorbed in reading, that I did not notice him, I think the book was a Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Davis' asked what we were planning on doing in London, I was excited to say that We were going to Hampton Court & to Harrod's for a new kilt. This turned out to be a memorable trip, because Mom & Mrs Davis exchanged hotel info. Mrs Davis then accompanied Mom & I on out trip to H.P. and a few other outings, We were guests of Mr Davis at his Opening night. For years afterward My Mom exchanged holiday cards with Mrs Davis, until everyone's passing.

Here's a story that's floated around Hollywood and 'Vegas for decades: during the time that Altovise Davis was battling the IRS for a settlement, she was so broke she opened Sammy's Forest Lawn crypt and retrieved several pieces of jewelry from his body including an engraved wrist watch Frank Sinatra had given him. In addition, the $1,000 in cash that had been placed in his jacket pocket as likewise removed. This story was given credence when a few years later that same easily-identifiable watch [that was well-known to have been buried with him] was sold at auction.

Sammy was never married to Kim Novak. He was married, and had a daughter with, Mai Britt, who is ABSENT ENTIRELY from this video.

I do enjoy your videos a lot, but, one thing that a lot of content creators do that is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me is, not take the time to make sure that people’s names are pronounced correctly. His wife’s name was pronounced AL-TOE-VEES. Other than that, great video!

I remember Sammy Davis Jr. when I was a little girl. What I remember about him was that he was a little dude that was very, very talented. He could do it all in the entertainment field. He was a great singer, dancer, tap dancer, movie star etc. I remember his wives also. Kim Novak was one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood. I remember also that there was a controversy about his marriage to Kim, but I did not know, as a child, 🧒 to what extent, and that he had married Altovise to get certain people off his back. My family and I really liked her. She seemingly had a 👍🏾 nice mannerism about her. I knew also that he wound up with a glass eye from an accident. A pity and shame that he had to adhere to the tax collectors for unpaid taxes, as much as he accomplished in life. We 💕 loved you Sammy. Do Rest In Peace. ✌🏽

This is the second time, for me, that Harry Cohn's name is mentioned in connection with the ruination of a celebrity. The first was when it was said he pushed Curley Howard to crank out more Three Stooges Shorts while he was convalescing from a stroke. The outcome was fatal for Curley. Then he inserts himself in Kim Novak's personal life by having the mob to put a kibosh on Sammy Davis's intention on marrying her because it would be bad for business. The result was likewise horrendous. Harry Cohen was truly a POS. Smh
