The size initially looked like a vent more than a volcano. As a geologist I am thrilled to see the chemistry is primitive and originates from such depth. Another two important changes: 1. The rate of flow is increasing. 2. The temperature has increased as evidenced by the lighter color of the lava as it exits the cone. First colors were red and orange. Now it is yellow and upon occasion pale yellow.

Question. What would the composition of the smoke be? And does the position of the moon affect such eruptions (rate seems to fluctuate)?
@narcismacau

and with these data what do you think? It could be a more powerful eruption or these eruption can be more to north to an existing volcano?
@mlight6845

The reports identify the smoke as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. This is common for primitive lava, which is a tholeiite (low silicate, high magnesium and iron giving it the black color after it cools). This type of lava has low viscosity, partly due to the gases and the higher temperatures, so it flows out smoothly. I am not sure what is happening subsurface as I have not seen the profiles of seismic activity with depth or time.
@mlight6845

@@normanrevell902 Reports say the flow has been 5-10 m³/s, which is on the small side. It seems to fluctuate but I cannot tell if the appearance of a change is that there is flow from a vent not visible from the camera angle, the shift from day to night alters depth perception and heat is more apparent or something else. Really fascinating to learn from an active shield volcano.

@@mlight6845 It is also very shiny and glassy, such bits as have been photographed held in hand. That suggests high silica content which also tends to make it runny at high temperatures and gooey as it cools. Iceland has an entire (small) mountain made almost entirely of obsidian; the most perfectly translucent obsidian I have ever seen. Razor sharp cleavage as you might expect.

Dear 'Just Icelandic', I really apperciate your videos which give a perfect authentic view of what Iceland makes so special or so 'icelandic' - at least in my eyes. A special thank for not jumping on the popular train of all the actual selfie tourism to Geldingadalir to catch even more spectacular pictures but for observing the situation in a sober and informative way. This is the right approach. We don't know what will happen. But there is obviously the begin of somthing new. Shield volcanoes are pretty common in the landscape of Iceland but their creation was never witnessed. This 'tourist eruption' may slowly develop to something much bigger and more serious than we can imagine now - but we will see.

Great questions Gylfi. I’m a geologist and anthropologist who did his PhD on geoparks (including Katla geopark as one of my case studies). My view is that geos including vulcanologists generally do not get training in communications and translating their science for the wider public. Gaps certainly need bridging..
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic 3 жыл бұрын
You are so right about communications :) It's really not the strong side of our experts and I can easily forgive that up to some limits but all this matter is already so far out of that was to expect. Lets hope that old Katla behaves this year but my guess is that our scientists will be very busy all this year, if not on Reykjanes, then Grímsvotn who are also ready for action.

There’s a lot of things to consider here ground deformation is it still inflating or is there deflating going on. And what about tremors are they increasing decreasing etc. What about the gases what’s their make up what percentage of the different gas is coming out of the volcano. And then you have to consider the make up of the lava itself? All these things need to be considered the best thing to do is compare it to previous irruption‘s of similar volcanoes then you can start making a educated guess on what’s going to happen I’m sure your people are on it.

I think the reason we are all so mesmerized by this is the fact how unbelievably much bigger this is than us. Also, it's - at the moment, at least - safe so we can watch this without the hassle of screaming and running for our lives. Looking at the map at 3:12 I wonder: If this is a local shield volcano and the eruption stays there and goes to the south, this should be a wonderful touristic opportunity for you guys? You didn't sound very enthusiastic, so is there something I am missing (which is highly likely)? Concerning the big shield volcano the highway goes over: If this new one is connected to that, doesn't that make an eruption there very unlikely, as lava is essentially a thick fluid and will go the way of least resistance, therefore to the new volcano? And finally, a very well deserved "well done!" - this video is perfect in length, full of information and little speculation which is clearly identified as such.
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much :) as for the tourist opportunity, if the lava goes south I'm thinking about the town Grindavík first of all...so I'm really not sure how to place my own feelings, if you know what I mean...But of course it's huge change for the tourist industry, and the most exciting chance in the world for photographers like me, so I'm all flared up :) but the lack of information makes me hold hold back, at least until I know that Grindavík will stay safe. It looks fine for the town in the moment, but if it's a long-term event, and a new mountain is to be formed, we would no want to see lava flow to west for sure...

I"m Hawai'ian, and we're used to living with shield volcanoes that are effusive. The lava sometimes burns up neighborhoods, and all we can do is watch as it slowly creeps like a glacier towards peoples' homes. But hey, we perservere, make national parks based off our volcanoes, and even put astronomical observatories on top of one of them (Mauna Kea). Tourists come from all over the world to see them and their slow eruptions, generating millions of dollars each year. Since Iceland had to have a new volcano, an effusive shield volcano is probably the best you could get. If the lava heads toward town, all you can do is get out of the way and record it on your phone.

You're right when you say watching it is mesmerizing, I had all four cameras up on four sceens. Stunning, awe-inspiring and beautiful at the same time, but also dangerous, so I hope it will not end up destroying lives or livelihoods. I've heard it poses problems around pollutants making it into the water around. But I have no idea how drinking water is handled in Iceland, so it would be interesting to hear in one of your next videos. Also, what are the local people living around it saying on TV and such? I'd probably be somewhere between oddly excited (as long as it stays fairly tame as it's now) and quite concerned, I assume.

Lava from Etna reached the city of Catania in 1669. You can still see it here and there. Out of the back window of the Benedictine abbey, now part of the University. Perhaps many of you here have also been keeping an eye on Etna over the last two months. Some big eruptions recently. Almost daily. But quieter now for the last few days.

Think of a Lava Lamp, Switch the lamp on and the wax in the bottom begins to warm. Once the wax heats up sufficiently, it becomes less dense than the liquid it is in and becomes bouyant, warm blobs start to rise. Once they reach the top they stay for a while, then fall back down as they cool and loose bouyancy. Scale that up to Iceland and you have a good analogy for how the Iceland Mantle Plume works. The size of the seismic area of the last couple of months suggests a substantial amount of magma has risen beneath Reykjanes and burned through the crust, finding the weakness it needed to break through and erupt.

The biggest issue is that no-one has seen this before: our lives are may-fly short compared to geological processes, that the only sensible thing we can do is record events for passing onto future generations. That way, as and when such an event occurs again, our descendants will have something to refer to and compare their event to. As for us, we might as well watch Nature's spectacle, and keep on guessing what will happen next, from day to day. At least, with this style of volcanism, anyone in the path of the eruption is going to have time to get out of the way. And whilst they are watching the volcano grow, the leaders and lawmakers of Iceland will have time to ponder on what they need to do next.

With the start of the eruption, we saw a sharp decrease of earthquakes, which now concentrate in five major places, that correspond with old lavafields. The earthquakes are lower in magnitude. Most of the attention now goes to the active eruption, while the earthquakes continue also in other areas. At one time there was also the expectation of multiple eruptions on the Reykjaness Peninsula. Question: Is any work being done on the other potential eruptionsites? If not, why not?

Thanks for sharing the video and your thoughts. I reckon that this may continue for some time yet. What does fascinate me is the development of new fissures or mini volcanoes. It has gone from 1 to 6 or 7 and the volume of lava being produced is quite astonishing. I am wondering if there might be a collapse of the terrain between some of these fissures to create an even larger outpour. I also wonder if the local experts have obtained thermal images of the area that would indicate how large the magma pool is. I have been watching the Hale um u crater activity in Hawaii. Thanks again :)

In this case I'm told that the magna comes from the mantle or 17-20km down so thermal images would not be of so much use exa-exept to see the just under the surface but all those firssure come from the same source, is so am I told :) and thanks for visiting :)

The questions you raise are critically important, but as you say, the answers so far have been “we don’t know yet.” Understandable that they don’t want to panic people without knowing key information. At least topographic maps should show where the lava would go if it continued to erupt in the same place at the same rate and if no earthquakes changed the topography. Lots of “ifs” in that. You know the next valley, but as you say, what comes after that? Your coming report on a mature shield volcano might give an idea of whether the eruptions that produced it had explosive phases or moved around significantly. I am not a geologist, but even I can see that magma coming from so deep, in a place where the continental plates are pulling apart, on a peninsula with other large shield volcanos, is unlikely to be part of just a brief shallow event. Good wishes from across the ocean in New England.

Thank you so much for your comment... I somehow thought I had heard it all about the peninsula when the started to mention "shield volcano" so I'm re-programming my self these days. And I agree, a brief shallow event looks far away, 14 months of constant earthquakes all around the peninsula must be prepping something more than what we see now...

I have some knowledge and experience with Hawai'ian shield volcanoes. And one thing which is known about them is that they have tendency to create their own geography. The original lines of steepest descend (direction where the lava is supposed to flow) are true only at the beginning and afterwards they need to be constantly redrawn as the volcano is creating its own terrain.

It is incredible difficult to predict eruptions. There are to my best knowledge no accurate way to measure the entire system that feed the magma to the volcano. Yes there are indications of from how deep it comes, but there are no good resolution tools that can "see" how much lava is down there, or measure the pressure in the magma chambers and tubes going upwards. All we got are what we know from other previous basaltic eruptions, and how long they lasted, and they vary a lot. I do not know all the data about previous eruptions in this area. Long lasting eruptions can be both one eruption that just goes on for years, or it can be one volcano that erupts for some weeks or months every few years, or it can be a system of volcanoes that take turn erupting from time to time over a long time. All of these scenarios are possible options for this volcano. It is really hard to tell. If geologists say they do not know, it is because that is how it is. We do know a lot about volcanoes and eruption, there are good warning indicators for eruptions that are under development, but with new eruptions sites like this, it is really any ones guess how long it will go on for or even if this eruption is a one off or if it will be a volcano that will erupt periodically for thousands of years to come.

Well, my gut feel is saying that the magma's high temperature level combined with a sufficiently large-scale chamber plus tube system would enable longlasting, steady flows for heat capacity reasons. And sudden changes of tube-geometry/anomalies seem unlikely, the magma's low-viscosity considered. Thus, the process could get a lengthy one, provided Greta isn't demanding an immediate end of volcanic activity, and nature surrenders to her...

@@franzculetto5962 I can agree with the gut feelings, but it is still not really a precise science in as far as there are too many factors we do not know about. Yes, a big shield volcano is composed of layers upon layers upon layers, and it will take more than a human lifetime to get very big. That said, if it continues to be active for years at this vent, it could spread across a substantial area and really mess up our puny human structures. I like to describe geology as “trying to solve a four-dimensional jigsaw puzzle with a third of the pieces destroyed back along the time axis”... For volcanoes and earthquakes, in order to make ‘predictions’ (educated guesses) we have to solve the puzzle first and the project the time axis forward into the unknown.

As far as I know, there are very few people or animals in the way of the expected lava flow. And it’s very slow moving lava so they would have time to get out of the way if it comes to that. If this goes on for years and years then perhaps it could encroach on more populated areas, but that’s a ways off.

@@trojanpony, I was playing with the words, because the name of the valley translated into English is “Gelding Valley” (A gelding is a castrated male horse.) However, it is true that I wouldn’t stay if I lived close to an eruption that was going on for a long time. Laki erupted (and I think) for about 10 months? It produced great quantities of gas, one was fluorine. They have just found fluorine in puddles near Geldingadalur. I believe this a hotspot plume that could last decades. Animals during Laki had fluorodosis, it is not a nice way to die, very painful. Laki also caused 10s of thousands of deaths in Europe. Maybe this is why it is so silent on behalf of the scientists?

You might want to start looking for a good spot for another airport. Looks like the prevailing wind will blow the gases away, nearly all the time. So the capital city should remain habitable for quite a while. Water pumping might be able to divert the lava, if it heads that way. Maybe run electric cables to the pumps and you could pump water all the time, without using millions of liters of expensive diesel fuel.
