That drive is rekt. The mechanical alignment issue along would be close to impossible to get back to spec.

If my electronics teacher in College in the late 80s was Mark I would have actually have learnt something and had a laugh as well at the same time. There is a market for this outside of You Tube in teaching for young adults and older peeps.

I do think it would be handy if there was an innuendo counter during each repair. I'm sure this one would rank highly.

My grandad had two Einsteins and I have one of them now. They are great machines - very well built, with a superb keyboard. That version of Chuckie Egg is a great port; nice colours and very fluid. I played it endlessly as a kid.

It's always a disappointment when something can't be saved, but I guess that's just how the dice roll sometimes. That drive looked well past the point of saving, poor thing. Glad you were able to get your hands on a replacement though!

Someone really did a number on that drive. I'm guessing the reason it jammed in the first place was that missing runner on the underneath of the drive. It would've popped off and put the carriage out of alignment, and then they've made it worse by pushing and pulling and levering it until it was all bent out of shape. If they'd just disassembled the machine, found the parts of the runner and reassembled it, it probably would've worked just fine. Anyway, thanks Simon. Thimon.
@MarkFixesStuff

I reckon you're probably bang on there. I later found the old runner lodged in the machine, luckily not shorting anything.

lol chuckie egg .. hold all the control keys down at once and it jumps a level lol, I actually own one brand new in box with the original receipt priced at 499.99 at my daughters as I dont live in the UK anymore.. it still has the box (bit tatty) and a load of disks, I always wanted an 80 column card but too expensive. The TC01 was the first computer I learnt to program back in the 1987, I dont own the original but I managed to get the one I currently own upgraded with a second drive. I spent hours developing applications and games back then ... I had a few friends who worked for Ocean Software back then ... hence why I know so much about the Einstein and its legacy in computing.. built to last .. so loved that micro.. compared to all the other computers i developed on like the BBC, spectrum, C64 oh I could speak for hours about these amazing computers ..long live 8 bit!!

Great vid Mark with a lot of great humour as always. My old Amiga 500 drive sounds something similar, oh dear, but not quite as bad. I will dismantle it for a possible refurb or it's time for a Gotek, as its only managed to load one disk out of the past 40 I have tried, plus the same scary noise along the way. It's as filthy inside as this video haha. Good job.

Bringing up the Gotek is making me think about the old A1200 again. I put it away years ago as DF0: was getting dodgy and to top it off, my SWOS disk 1 developed read errors and would no longer load, even in the ever reliable DF1:. Seeing all these Goteks being installed just makes me wanna grab one and try it out, with the other half going "I bet a cap'll pop as soon as I turn it on".

Wow spoilers in the title :P But yea someone probably really thrashed that old drive trying to get that disk out so sadly an unlikely repair, unless you can take it completely apart and put all the parts in jigs or something, or have replacement pieces stamped and milled.

i presume its the same as the amstrad drive
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff Жыл бұрын
I thought it would be as well, but It’s actually quite different. The drive connector isn’t IDC pins, but card edge like a 5.25 floppy and the drive is directly motor driven unlike the belt drive model in the Amstrad machines. I’d go as far as saying it’s higher quality.

The biggest surprise from all this is that it never dawned on me that the first name of each of the people in the high score table of Chuckie Egg reads as Chuckie Egg. How on Earth did I not notice that when I first started playing that game 38 years ago when I was 11 on the speccy?

I must say, even though I like the original floppies and such. I would replace them with Gotek or something else... Now, that I found a proper new PSU for my QL (had it for like 3 or 4 years and never even got to try it, because no PSU...), I need to get a replacement for MicroDrive... Who in their right minds would use a MicroDrive anymore? Such an unreliable thing...

Don't zoom in when you're stripping the Phillips head screws. It made me cringe. Either replace them, use a proper sized and typed screwdriver for them ( pz or ph ) or replace them with Torx which are superior. The next person along will have a rough time getting the screws out of they are unlucky. The angle is no excuse, they make extended length screwdrivers for that. I could literally see you scraping metal of the heads brr.
