Recently, I replaced a complete fuel system due to contamination of what appeared to be bleach with elements of DEF fluid. This video is a rundown of what was replaced, why and how you can hopefully prevent yourself from having this bad of a situation if an error were to happen with you.
The diesel additive other people suggest, because I suggest the one from the owners manual, of course.

I always thought it was so stupid that GM used to have the Def tank filler in the engine bay on the older 6.6 trucks but now I can see that that was definitely an easy way of preventing someone from accidentally putting Def in their fuel tank.

Funny that I see this the same day another guy in our shop just got done doing the full fuel system replacement on a 6.6 for the same thing. Dude put like 3 gallons of DEF in his tank and drove until it stalled. Best part is, the customer came in one day while the cab was in the air.

Stanadyne performance formula in every fill on my LM2. They manufacture injection pumps and have a long history. On top of that the guys at Diesel Fuel Injection Service here in Portland, OR work on diesel pumps and injectors all day every day and it's their #1 recommended additive.

When I'm at the pump filling up my AT4 w/LM2, I try to be very focused. Operator error can really bite your ass. I wish GM would go to an inside release for the fuel door, any idea why they don't? That could help prevent some mischievous people from screwing around with your vehicle. Another great video!

Thanks for the great video, apart from accidentally contaminating your fuel, there are whack job environmentalists also who will dump crap into your fuel, just because your engine is diesel, they just go around looking for diesel name plates, the problem is getting locking caps for the newer style of fill ports, Im not a fan of the cap-less diesel fill port, there is a company out there that makes aluminum locking fuel and def caps, I just don't recall who it was, locking caps are a good deterrent, I pithy the fool I catch trying to pour crap in my fuel.

I bought a couple quarts of Mobil 1 today. Was suprised to see Auto Zone had it in stock. I know I have seen people saying you can't find it anywhere. When I looked online I can order all the Mobil 1 and AC Delco I want. I am assuming the AC Delco is probably just Mobil 1. Figured I should have a couple quarts just in case. I normally change my own oil but its a brand new Denali Ultimate I just got a month or so ago. I just hit 1k miles on it and it still has its first free oil change so I figure its probably best to buy the oil when I actually need it but I wanted some just in case I check my truck and its a quart or so low. I bought a box of the Peak Platinum guess it is DEF. Was only like $2 more then the normal Peak stuff figured I would spend the extra $2. I have went through half a tank of DEF in 1k miles. Should it burn through it that fast. The salesman at the dealership was telling me it should last me like 5-7000 miles lol. I didn't really believe that but I didn't think I would go through a half tank of it already. There has been no towing or anything. If you believe the truck when I look on the dash it says the best MPG it has got so far is 37.5 and average of the life of the truck says around 28. The Denali Ultimate only comes with 323 gears though would have liked 373 but think everything comes basically standard with the Ultimate besides paint color. Mine is pearl white. The dealer had it in and I drove up and bought it $83k out the door taxes and all cash. Figure that was a good deal was suprised they knocked $1500 off for it being a diesel. I don't know if that is some sort of promo GM was doing or if it was just the dealer. Soon as I got it though they got in the new 24 3/4 ton Ultimate. I like my new truck just maybe I should have waited and got the HD lol. It was only like $10k more

Hello, I wonder if you can help with a situation I’m having. My 2021 Silverado 3.0 baby duramax is throwing all kinds of codes. Service ESC, parking brake, and my OBD computer is telling me cylinder 2 is misfiring. Truck does have reduced power and running rough. Last June my vehicle had a whole fuel system replacement as a result of def fluid contamination. My truck will allow me to drive in limp mode but should it be towed to prevent further damage. The codes I got on my home analyzer was cylinder 2 misfire and fuel injector 2 malfunction. Don’t want to run on assumptions here but could the fuel injector be bad or could there be a more serious underlying issue?

A very good visual of what happens when two chemicals react. What. A. Mess. With all the talk about a oil pump belt - fuel contamination from being in a hurry at the fuel island or Car/Auto diesel island will be a higher risk repair than that belt ever will be. Thank you for ending the debate on which HP fuel pump is in our 3.0’s. Your doing great work. Let the additive debate begin! Side question. Could the BCM be programmed to not start the lift pump when the door is opened. Seems this could lessen the risks?
@DemonWorks

It could lessen, but at the same time, would result in a longer crank/start, I would assume and then people would be unhappy.

This must be why the new models dont have fuel cap. It has that safety valve thing where unless you are pushing it deep with the actual diesel pump, dropping fluid on the top will just drop to tbe bottom of the truck. I guess it’s better than just letting it in.

So I did a pretty extensive testing on the additives for this lm2. I filled up ever tank from the same station. Ran a total of 8 tanks of fuel 4 with additive and 4 without. Did this twice in one year once in the summer and once in the winter. Everytime I ran the additive I average less MPG. I tried to do similar driving during these test and I know there are a lot of factors to this but everytime an additive went in I average about 1.5-2mpg less a tank, currently average about 24mpg a tank right now combined city and hwy. With the Hot Shots I was getting about 22.5mpg if not worse. I havent tried a different additive but its on the list to test sometime. I gave the hotshots to a neighbor to run in his old 7.3l.

Had to clean the fuel tank, replace the fuel filter (in-line prime system), diesel fuel water separator, particulate filter housing assembly, and replace the water in fuel sensor. Can you tell me would it be the same procedure if someone put gas in this truck? He said he didn't start it but I pulled the fuel filter and it was full of gas. My next step is to pull a injector to see if it made it that far. With it being gas and not def, would I be able to flush everything or recommend just getting a contamination kit with all new fuel parts?
@DemonWorks
@DemonWorks 7 ай бұрын
There is a huge chance you can save it (the fuel system). You need to get the gasoline out asap, flush everything out that you can and a fresh fuel filter or two, fresh diesel fuel and some cleaner/additive in there and run it as much as you can. Gasoline is not as corrosive as DEF, thankfully, but it will cause damage if not fixer almost immediately.

I bought a diesel fuel cap that's magnetic from Amazon and the dealership where I get my oil changed said remove it. They stated it will cause problems with the valve in the fuel filler neck and prevent it from working as it should. Have you heard of this? I like the diesel cap and it seals out dirt and water especially when I go to the car wash. Was told that if I continue using it they'd void the warranty if there is a problem with the valve in the filler neck later on.
@DemonWorks

Great question! I run a cap on mine, I much prefer it there to keep contaminants out like when going through a car wash and the fuel door blows open … I also like it there to block me when filling with def in case I make an error while being distracted… as far as warranty goes, if the part caused a failure, then yes that part could be not warrantable.

I’m using DEF at truck stops, I think what can help is if owners would buy a cap from Amazon and develop a routine- open cap take care of diesel, put cap on, same with DEF. GM moved the Def side by side in 2022 for the refresh for sure. It has a cap the diesel is cap less. Accidents happen, as the video shows. Expensive lesson.

Thanks for the info on the fuel pump, was really hoping GM was not using Bosch after all their recent issues on the larger diesel trucks… On the top tier / additive question, there is good info here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/isp4oMSq19qVZHU.html Basically top tier was an effort between the manufacturers and some fuel producers to try and standardize diesel grading, but it has not really gone the way they wanted and is slowly dying off.

What are your thoughts about 100% renewal diesel in our 3.0 ? Is it better than 100% top tier?

Honestly, I am not informed well enough on renewable diesel so I cannot give my opinion. It is something I will look into more and learn about.

I think the DEF movement for vehicles now to meet emissions requirements needs to disappear. It seems to be a constant problem for any level of vehicle maintenance and maintenance needing done as a result of DEF being a cause to many vehicle repair issues. Would love to be able to do a DEF delete on these trucks and legally get away with driving my truck. 😢

That’s one of the stupidest set ups I’ve ever heard of. Why the hell would you start the fuel pump with opening the door?

To prime the system … if it did not do it, there would likely be an additional second or two of cranking and people would lose their minds. More so than a self priming fuel system.
