ford explorer failed transfer case which we done making loud noise just prior to breaking down here's why
Is your Ford Explorer grinding or clicking not going into gear find out why. After this 1997 transfer case was removed from a Ford Explorer we pulled the casing to inspect the damage to find out what the issue was. After careful inspection several items were damaged.
Rebuild kit can be purchased online through eBay or other vendors.

This is exactly what happened to mine last year at 223k miles. I ended up getting it rebuilt by a really good transmission guy in Colorado Springs. Not a lot of info on this out there when mine did this. Good video...very much needed!

Just got an explorer, didnt try the 4x4 untill after i signed.. Definitely gonna have to find a salvage lot.

Good to know what the inside of these things look like. I'm hacking apart a 99 Mountaineer to use its drivetrain for my 98 Ranger(will probably just go 2WD). Sounds like you've got a Maryland or southeast Pennsylvania accent in the video too, I could recognize one of those anywhere. Good video.

I got one of those from the junk yard, it lasted 2 days, then same issue. Replaced it with a 1st gen transfer case.

My 01 Sport Trac has a strange clucking sound and you can feel it through the truck but only after you have been driving fast on the freeway for a while and then you slow down and exit for a fuel stop and you are moving very slow just moving up to the bowsers and then by the time you get fueled up and start to leave it has stopped making the noise again. I was wondering if the chain gets hot and sags a little bit and is hitting on something. My problem is that I live in the Philippines and there is nobody with any experience of these over here. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 97 that uses the 4405 Borg Warner. I got a used replacement. It works. BUT. The speed sensor seems not to work. And I lost my 5th gear.

I have a 93 explorer that has 160k miles when I put the trans into reverse I have a bad grinding noise put it in drive and it cycles all gears forward fine would this be the same issue? Had a local mechanic tell me the t case has two chain tensioners and that the reverse tensioner went out causing the grinding noise any help would be great

Mine has a steady almost like a quiet roaring noise, would a change of oil help it or hurt it? It's a 96 Ford Explorer

My 98 explorer makes a grinding sound only when i let off the gas, so it probably something wrong with the transfer case?

Not necessarily. Could be something as simple as a drive shaft universal joint directly under your seat connected to the back end of the gearbox. So as you drive and accelerate the force of acceleration keeps tension on the joint and then the minute you let go of the gas it slacks off And in turn reacceleration places tension until you release the gas again.

I wonder if it's possible to bypass this transfer case and remove it altogether and simply swap out parts from a two-wheel drive?

Surely it couldn't be that easy. You would need access to a fabrication shop

If it's a 4r70w, you can just get a tailshaft housing and extension off of a 2wd, and just slap that bad boy in there. Depending on the model of vehicle, you might need a different length driveshaft though. Just had to do this on my 97 f150, but ymmv

I have a 97 Explorer and Every time I make a Sharp turn or cut the motor off,It kicks into 4x4, I don't know what to do, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU KNOW WHAT GOING ON!! THANKS

Sounds like it could be the automatic relay went bad on the side of the transfer case. Obviously Auto controlled by a switch correct

Could also be a failed wire
