MOT time then for the cheap Proton I saved from being scrapped when I won the car from a salvage auction.
The car hasn't had an MOT since November 2023!

One big problem, which is possibly why it was scrapped, is that being a Proton it's virtually impossible to get many parts since they haven't sold Protons in the UK for years even after tying up with Lotus. As a mechanic I had a client who has had two Protons from new, a 1996 Persona, which ended up donated to the fire brigade as a training scrapper, and a 2006 Impian. In the end that was ditched because most spares were impossible to get easily. The Impian engine was a Mitsubishi so I could get coil packs etc, but there were loads of electrical issues and I had to put extra wiring in to bypass the looms which lost continuity and I couldn't get wiring diagrams. The exhaust had to be bodge welded as I couldn't get one without waiting ages and paying twice what the car was worth, which was virtually nothing. In the end he p/xd it for £150 against a nearly-new Skoda Octavia, still MOTd and running, one owner from new. Fair play to you for resurrecting an almost certainly worthless car even with an MOT, but to be honest the scrapyard was probably where it belonged.

@@nigelbarratt6825 thanks for sharing your thoughts. I work at a motor factors and after some digging, they have managed to find me all the mechanical parts I need for mine luckily… I just saw potential in this one to be honest, it’s nice colour, low mileage and it’s not too bad on the eye, I obviously didn’t know it would fail MOT, I bought the unknown and for that fact I was willing to give this car a chance and throw some money at the car to save it, but other people like the previous owner I guess, would just scrap it for sure. Hi Amber, was scrolling through some videos whilst waiting for my own video to convert and a love your little proton, an absolute Jem definitely worth the fix and the story behind it. I too bought a pre 2000's can (vauxhall vectra) and i myself is battling rust. ive had a corsa b 1998 (s reg) before this with symilar rust issues to your proton and there is no greater feeling than giving a old crock some love and a chance to shine again against the (lack of parts) newer cars that generate so many simple issues that are so difficult to repair. Older cars like these are so much easier to service and deserve a second chance to live on. Congrats on the MoT pass. Are you gonna tackle any future jobs youurself? Most engines are interference engines which mean that valves will hit pistons if a timing belt/chain breaks so you're doing right to drive it as little as possible before fitting a new cambelt. You will probably need a tensioner as well at least. Brake pad replacement is a job you should tackle yourself. The discs might also need to be replaced so you will need to assess their condition. Replacing all 4 tyres was another good call. Anything is going to be better especially with the 19 year old ones. When I had to replace the rear tyres on my Mercedes, I went for budget ones with decent wet grip and fuel economy ratings becuase it isn't my daily driver.

@@Driven247the car is a good one I was saying about the welding I've seen some shocking welding on cars for MOT I couldn't do it and leave it like that it's worth a better job on it to be honest no paint will hide that but ok he did it for the MOT I hope it was a cheap job

@@petergrinnell2500 Im happy with Brendon’s efforts, my Dad is good at welding but would have taken him ages to do my car, so glad I got it done by Brendon. I’ll give that patch some finishing touches.

could end up costing you even more. if you could get a small profit, sell it. IMHO.

over next 5-10 years it will go up in value get in great condition you get your money back whatever you spend. more and more holding on to older cars what driving the cost up of used cars, my car is worth an extra £1k 4 years later and its a 2011 car. less and less new real cars sold these will have good value later on down the line.

@@stevekenilworth thanks Steve, would love to have some garage space to store a few cars but I don’t even have a garage, ah! Yeah, some of these retro cars will start to go up for sure, I agree! Thanks for watching.

🤔hmmm. Doesn't seem worth the bother for a car that is worth no more than £500-£1000. I am an M.O.T tester and I have sent many of these cars to the crusher. There's a reason why you don't see many of these cars anymore!! It's because they are crappie cars and they have all been scrapped 😅😅

@@knight-pg8gk yeah I bet people don’t bother, but when buying this car, knew it would need an MOT and some money spending so personally, I was ok with that, but I guess many other “non” car people wouldn’t see the point and would easily scrap a car for sure. Thanks for watching.

@Driven247 there is a reason there's no more proton dealerships anymore!. I myself have worked for many dealers over the years and even when these cars were only a few years old and people wanted to trade them in for a different car we wouldn't take them. Due to the fact of poor quality and reliability issues. But if you are happy with the car then good for you 👍 my advice to you would be try and source a service book from somewhere and chase up any history that the car has. As this will be pivotal for if and when you decide to sell it! There will be someone out there who still has a genuine proton service stamp. I have a few dealers stamps ford/ Vauxhall/ Mercedes/ BMW etc as when I buy a car as long as it has a service book I can stamp the book upto date and and add good bit of value and profit when selling 😀

Anyone remember LADA, FSO and YUGO dealers? During the early 90s, I wanted to buy a FSO 125p because they were very, very, very cheap.
