Even people like these guys are treating horses like they're disposable. "They're hooves grow out and they're no good for anything" is a complete copout you can cut and treat their hooves and they can be companions, hacking ponies or just pets. Their life isn't over, their usefulness to humans is. We are so quick to shoot a horse over a broken leg that will heal with treatment. If she didn't pass those tests to be an event horse she'd be dead even though she's in good health. We need to treat horses better. These guys aren't impressing me they will only rehab horses that will make them good money the rest they give up on.

If a horse breaks a leg it is MONTHS of being in a sling. Horses graze and they are social animals. They also love to run. Their future is not bright even with the best medical care. It is cruel to keep them alive after such an injury. Quality of life is important. I have seen horses that have been retired and allowed to decompress in the pasture doing what so many think horses should do. They get depression. Horses need a job. It keeps them happy and gives them purpose.

My sister and I visited a ex-racehorse in an animal sanctuary in Norfolk. My sister who lives in Scotland had been given a year's sponsorship of this horse as a birthday present. When we reached his field, he and his 'herd' were so far away that we could only just make out that there was a chesnut in the group, but had no idea if it was him. We stood there for about 10 minutes hoping, but not expecting, that the herd would move closer. Then the horse we had been watching lifted his head, saw us, and left his herd to walk right across the field to 'talk' to us. And he was indeed the horse we had come to see. He didn't come expecting food, visitors are not allowed to feed the animals, he just came and stayed with us to be fussed until closing time forced us to leave him. I looked at his racing history when I got home. Racing against other horses was clearly not his strength, and at 7 years this beautiful soul was rescued on his way to slaughter. Thank God for those who saved his life and shame on those who abandoned him without finding a better life for him.

It’s sad to think that if she didn’t pass this test, they would have sent her on to an auction or a gruesome death. @@dailydoseofchaoslol jumping can be a much better career from the horse’s standpoint. Yes, there’s bad actors there. But when you look at champions in each sport, you’re looking at racehorses “retired” at 4 vs show jumpers in their prime in the low double digits. They can easily keep on competing for many more years from there, not just used up and thrown away overnight. Even those retired from competition due to age are typically fit to be ridden still. Time, training and hands-on care are invested in jumpers that race horses never see. But that’s just in competition- plenty of casual riders like to jump from time to time, and care for their personal horses on a much deeper level

@@Kytti-not-kitty my horses never did. They were nice healthy muscular weight and we rode them far every day. I'm not saying they don't need to be looked after. They still need dewormer every 6 weeks. And vaccines. So on.

@chery6030 what breed of horses? Many rehabbed ones are "shown" how to graze in a herd before rehoming as many stable horses just dont get the opportunity to graze and dont know what to do. Plus if they are used to a certain diet they can get sick off of grass or they dont gain the correct muscles. Like a body builder on protein and a super green diet going onto McDonald's. Technically its food but he will lose his physique

@@chery6030 Not all horses are created equal in that regard, and Thoroughbreds in particular can be "poor doers", who require some amount of grain in their diet to maintain a healthy weight. Lots of horses would be fine in a pasture, although the quality of the pasture is also important, and this didn't look like a pasture meant to be the only food source for horses. But Sally clearly isn't one of them. She's a lovely horse, and I hope she gets the tlc she deserves.

What were the numbers... 75% of race horses dumped at feedlots before they turn 6yrs old. 80% of feedlot horses here in the US are quarter horses. I think the breeders are as mcu to blame as the ones dumping their show and competition horses like an old pair of shoes. Or the Ramchers and Amish with their work horses that barely make it over 10yrs old. An industry as disgusting as their canine counterparts.

I see all these people assuming she was neglected. The show says she was dumped, but how did they know her name or that she was a horsehoese if they didn't know anything about her? Then show also says that the equestrian racing trust was the one to call the vet. Sooo, was this truly a negligence case?

She’s visibly thin, hooves are overgrown and her coat is patchy. An abandoned horse in such condition is very much neglected! ID in the form of tattoos, branding or microchips can be found on many former racehorses, so it’s likely that they figured out which horse they were looking at without the last owner’s help

For heaven sakes, putting all of those side reins and stuff on that poor mirror to make her hold her head behind the vertical must be very uncomfortable. No wonder she is bucking. Having people in the UK learn something from the folks here in the United States that are doing more natural horsemanship.

The UK? You realise this is Australia? Besides there are people all over the world who both treat horses well and treat horses badly.. Inlcuding the United States. I've seen a LOT of horrific practices that take place over there. Look how long the fight has taken to try to end the "Big Lick". Natural horsemanship is definitely a thing over here in the UK too. There are good and bad people everywhere.
