gadget73 Worked as engineer in charge of two of these babies as propulsion engines on a small east coast/Great Lakes tanker....lovely engines on the run...but, after each transit of the Welland canal , had to stop and clean scavenge spaces & ports, to prevent scavenge fires...not good on a vessel with 50k barrels of gasoline aboard !!!!

What 2 stroke oil did they run with? Now I’m thinking about a Polaris 1700 OP made from 2 850 patriot turbo engines and lay it down in the 2023 khaos with silber turbos. Achates power should get in on this. I’m running BRP XD-200 6 gallons on my 8v92 2 stroke turbo.

@@jlo13800 no two stroke oil. Normal pressurized lube oil system. It has no valves, only ports in the cylinder walls with a blower to push the air through the cylinders.. Opposed pistons, two crankshafts one on the top and bottom. They are geared together for a single output. The boat I was on in the Navy had a 6 cylinder version of this engine and it turned a 650 KW generator.

@@armcchargues8623 I been running BRP XD-100 in my 8v92 detroit 2 stroke turbo for some time now, i plumed some off the gerar internal VRO pump and gradually blend it with the fuel then i fill it up with more. Its the 2 stroke oil synthetic burns real clean and she runs good and a bit cooler.

What oil are you using, sae 40 low ash or TCW3? I thought of using xd-100/klots technipplr r50 for my 8v92 but its too darn expensive. i just got shell rotella with 2 gallons of quikcksilver sythetic tcw3 from walmart for my 8v92 silver detroit jimmy and im satisfied with the results. This OP 2 stroke methons could be applied to the sled, dirtbike and jetski market as well. Imagine taking 2 kx500 motora and building an OP 2 stroke for a custom kx100 op 2 stroke dirtbike. How about a 1700cc made from 2 850 rotax ETEC's? for a sick trail sled with lots of torque. ...And to think the Soviets used a pre-WW2 version of this as the model for the Kharkov 10D100 locomotive engines. Look for the 2-or 3TE locomotive videos. Looks like the Russians just run them into the ground with smoke an leaks shown in some of the videos.

What is the best 2 stroke rated oil for these? I heard synthetic silkolene pro 2 sx was best but it’s not cheap. This is a straight 40w clean burning synthetic 2 cycle oil with high film strength. DFI op 2 strokes run hotter like most DFI 2 strokes

Bruce Miller no man. These are not at all like cheap simple loop charged gas lawnmower and chainsaw engines. These are like a uniflow engine. They have pressurized oil systems like a 4 stroke. They have a supercharger on the intake air for induction. If you want to see the absolute ultimate gasoline 2 stroke, Google the Rolls Royce Creacy. Too bad they never finished development and the 10 prototypes were scrapped. Goal was 5000 HP. Supposedly the loudest exhaust of any engine ever.

Dont worry the trident OP 2 str4oke is here at well over 8000hp and total loss lubrication, The OP 2 stroke never went away, Hehe its more powerful than than ever, but not as much power per CID as a jumo junker though

I just got 7 gallons of klotz techniplate synthetic 2 stroke oil for my 8v92 detroit, boy does it run smooth and clean, its the same 2 stroke oil motorcross racers use but its SAE40W high film strength clean burning. I swear buy iit and it far surpasses shell rotella SAE40 as it runs much smother and cleaner, ill never go back to so called 40w 2 stroke diesel oil. Klotz rules

How do these compare to a modern Wartsila, Man, Bergen or Mak....? I'd think they'd be more complicated to work on with the opposed piston design. What about efficiency, reliability, quietness? I haven't heard of them being used in a new installation but they are still shown as a current product on the Fairbanks Morse site.

These have a lot more power to weight ratio. They are snowmobile engines on steroids, lots of HP at low rpm and can take way more turbo more boost and run dry sump 2 stroke oil feed! a 4 joke is similar size would self destruct trying to make the same power per CID at these low revs. today's 4 joke stroke is disposible1

FM offers them in a dual fuel setup these days for stdby and main power generation. They even have an electronically controlled version that reportedly meets emission standards. As far as maintenance goes major OH is around 100k hours which is only reason you would normally remove the upper crank. All other maintenance is easy access from outside the case. I had one with over 100k hours moderately maintained and on inspection still had cross hatch on the liners.

What wrong with total loss lubrication you idiot, sorry to be mean but thats what i love, Harley 1600 converted to uniflow 2 stroke with dry sump and oil injection< i got an 8v92 that burns more oil than you can think about and that the way it should be, Total loss oil burn off in the american way, convert a harlery 1+600v-twin to dry sump and oil in jection. Total loss is the oil injection burn of is about american freedom!

God damn my gilrfreinfsd rx-7 and her total loss oil injection at 40:1. My OMC rotary runs the same and a v-twin converted to 2 stroke burns less, OMG my 8v92 burns a gallon a day and a fairbanks morse OP submarine 2 stroke generator burns more oil than you can imagine. total loss lubrication is the American way, i have to except it 440 dodge converted to poppet valved 2 stroke with oil injection! Ugh i love it

There is nothing wrong with total loss lubrication as i like it better, i just got 7 gallons of klotz synthetic 2 stroke techniplate for my 8v92 and i swear by it. I worked on a dive boat that had 8v71 generators that were rigged with total loss oil burn-off and the detroit 2 stroke always had a clean oil supply. The chief engineer did this with less than 50$ worth of parts! the 8v71's could work on shell rotella SAE40 to quicksilver TCW3 2 stroke synthetic, we ran both and the quicksilver synthetic TCW3 was a much better oil over all but more expensive. Long live total loss oil burn-off.

Whats wrong with total loss burn off, if its a biodegrade oil it should be fine. The oil is burned off and there is no waste oil to get rid of, There where some geman diesels like duetz, sachs, JLO and stihl that had separate oil tanks that fed oil into them and burned it up.

An oil and gas producer here in TX took a whole bunch of these back in the 80’s and converted them over to natural gas fuel, installed spark ignition systems and used them to drive reciprocating gas compressors. They were a MF to work on but were ground rumbling bastards when they loaded up.

Ran a few of these on tugs back in the day, gotta say there isn't a more bulletproof powerplant out there. Properly maintained, heck even moderately maintained, these engines put out more power than any other. Just a wonderful design, too bad it couldn't survive emissions standards.

It really doesn’t matter any more what the uncontrolled emissions are. No engine cam meet current tier 4 emissions standards. They all require add-on emission controls.

Don't need pumps on both sides, can run 1 pump and 2 injectors on 1 side and blank off the other side.

SAE 40 low ash or klots2 cycle benoil will work fine in these engines as lube oil is fed to the fuel intakes for premix as it is burnt with the fuel.

A few gallons per hour ad the oil is burnt off as total loss. I heard the best oil is Silkolene pro 2 sx straight 40w synthetic. It’s more expensive but has much more film strength and burns cleaner.

it uses very little as there it is not a loss type oil system. uses as much as any other large diesel due to small piston losses.

10d100 was a soviet designed version of this engine had 10 cylinders instead of 12 as seen here, 10d100 has twin turbos and twin aftercoolers to produce 3000hp at 850rpm

10D100 was a "metricized" copy of Fairbanks Morse 38 8-1/8. These diesels were installed on some of the ships the USSR received through lend-lease.

It would be in "intercooler" if it was in between the two compression stages, however in 10d100 it was after both the turbos and the centrifugal supercharger (scavenging blower) which are in series, hence they are aftercoolers.@@markbeale7390
