The Fairey Firefly manufactured by Fairey Aviation Company, Ltd. is a British World War II era carrier-borne fighter and anti-submarine aircraft. The Fairey Firefly was a low-wing single-engine monoplane, with two separate cockpits. The pilot's cockpit was mounted above the wing leading edge, while the observer's cockpit was smoothly faired into the rear fuselage, starting above the wing trailing edge. The Fairey Firefly flew during World War II as a strike aircraft. After World War II the Fairey Firefly remained in service in both the UK and in Australia flying anti-ship missions off various aircraft carriers in the Korean War and serving in the ground-attack role in Malaya. The maiden flight of the Fairey Firefly took place on the 22nd December 1941 and it went into service in 1943. Primary user was the Fleet Air Arm. There were approx. 1,702 Fairey Firefly produced between 1941 and 1955. The last Fairey Firefly retired from service to the Fleet Air Arm in 1956.
