By Aletta van Meurs. This is a record of Aletta's voyage on board the Fairsea. Taken with a Super 8 movie camera in the sixties, copied onto DVD and from there I ripped it to AVI. A nostalgic view of that voyage. A reminder of how it may have been on the Australis, or Ellinis. Imagine the stress the parents of the little kids had while on the ship. The toddlers could have been gone overboard in seconds :/

My parents, my brother and I were on the Fairsea in 1953. We emigrated to Canada and arrived in Quebec on July 3, 1953. At nearly 12 years old, I don't remember too much of the journey, just that I was seasick a lot. I remember going through the English Chanel. Arriving at the Quebec Dock, I remember speaking through the porthole, with my broken English, with a Worker, who said Welcome to Canada. It is so weird to remember these things 60 years after.

Thanks for the the video of the Fair Sea, it was great to see it again. I came back to the UK on this ship after 4 years in Australia in November,1965 from Melbourne. The journey took nearly 7 weeks to complete, I was 12 years old. I remember having a rough ride through the Bay of Biscay. We took a right battering but my dad sat at the bar while all hell broke loose around him. Great memories.

Thanks a lot for sharing your Fairsea clip. It has brought back some nostalgic memories of me as a boy of six years travelling with my family from Wellington to Southampton in 1964. I recognised Singapore, Indonesian Islands, Bombay, Aden, the Suez Channel and Napels. And not to forget King Neptune when passing the equator. Even the rails were so recognisable.

we will be showing this to our Yaya who came to Australia in the 50's on the Fairsea from Greece. Not sure how it will make her feel, but I hope she had some good memories coming here on the ship. Thank you for posting this.

We came to Australia on the FAIRSEA in 1957 age 12 , Sailed through the canal during the middle east conflict , It was closed because of the conflict , Then opened again for a short time , This is when we came through, The canal was closed again and remained close for a while. We where not allowed ashore untill we got to Aden, Where we were advised to keep to the main streets for the short stay at Aden. We then sailed directly from Aden to Perth . They were the days to remember .

Thanks for bringing back a lot of memory's! I left Amsterdam on the Fairsea in 1955, at the age of 9 months, to end up in Brisbane Australia. We Came back in Juli 1962. I had just been looking for some pictures and never hoped to find a video. Your music, Stuart Jones - Timeless Nature, fits incredibly well together!

Thank you for putting this on KZfaq. I've been looking for footage of the FAIRSEA for some time. We came out to Perth, Australia on board her back in 1968. We travelled via Las Palmas and Capetown. One lady commented about the salt water swimming pool, which is something I'd completely forgotten about. We got so seasick at the start of the voyage, all I could keep down was boiled eggs, and to this day whenever I taste a boiled egg I think of the FAIRSEA. Cheers.

Fantastic! Brings back so many memories. I do remember that the water in the pool, on the Johan van Oldenbarneveld was salty. I must have gone in. That's not a clear memory. My father was lucky that he had a box camera, in '56. (Now I am.) Wish I could project the 'film in my head', particularly going through the Suez Canal, onto a screen!! My mother took a trip back to the Netherlands. You won't be surprised that I am staring at the video, hoping she was a passenger. She brought back photos.

Thanks for the memories. I went with my family on the Fairsea to Fremantle in 1967. The voyage didn't start well as an engine broke down in the Bay of Biscay and we limped into Las Palmas at only a few knots speed and in force 9 seas. All the passengers were seasick (apart from my grandfather who'd spent WW1 on HMS Hercules!). After that it got better and I've some happy memories of the voyage and the Fairsea but it was only 12 months later that the ship's engine problems were terminal. :-(

I was on the Fairsea in '80. Seems to have been a reissued ship. If i understand, the original was decommissioned . The Ship I was on was originally Cunards RMS Carinthia. Was the best vacation of my youth.

I remember travelling the same ship in 1960 as a 6 year old to England from Melbourne. I got lost on the boat in the Red Sea sight seeing. Finally when my father found me he slapped me on the mouth from frustratiion. Je was so worried that I could have fallen over board. The captain saw him and gave him a good telling off. We have a few pictures of the trip.

My entire family sailed in the Fairsea departing Southampton Feb 1961 and arriving on April 1 in Sydney. I celebrated my sixth birthday during the voyage. It may interest readers to know the Melbourne Immigration Museum features the Fairsea as its central theme. As a child that pool seemed Olympian! Terribly seasick throughout the entire time. Sawdust-stuffed camels and tin toys at Port Said....

The Sitmar ship "Fairsea" (1949 to 1969) shown here was in 1941 known as the Royal Navy Escort Aircraft Carrier D27 HMS Charger then later became AVC-30 then CVE-30 USS Charger. It was sold on after the war to Sitmar Cruises who modified it somewhat! A number of Sitmar ships of this era were conversions.

Hi Deb :) Thanks for the comments. Hope you can post your film one day. If its too costly to do, you can get a reasonable result by playing it on the projector and filming it with a video camera. Good luck :)

After having fled Franco's fascist dictatorship in Spain, my parents and 2 brothers came to Canada on board the Fairsea. Departing from Le Havre, they landed in Halifax on December 4th, 1951, took the train to Montreal, Québec and lived there afterwards.

@Ozcloggie Hi, thank you for leaving a comment :) Yes... I was focused on what I could see in those films. Every time I see a new film, or photo, a memory is revived. The ship was fun for me as a 19 year old. Anyway... there is a facebook group if you are interested, "SS Australis photos n stories" Im the Admin for that and there is aussipix.com that portal will take you to my web-site. Cheers from Wolfram

Thanks for sharing as it jolted a few memories. I was only 7 when we left Brisbane on the Fairsea in 1969 and headed to Panama Canal. However our cruise was cut short due to a fire in the engine room. The only photo I have from cruise is of my mum and I, with others and a beer can pyramid www.flickr.com/photos/jen_forward/3551246190/ There's also a great Sitmar Cruises facebook group at facebook.com/groups/44036863627/
