The best part is that she needed pawns like Harold and her immense workforce to Try, and fail to get her and her sons "Happily Ever After". That is assuming that she really cared about Prince Charming. We don't really have an indication on how she truly viewed her son or where his dad is, although it is possible that she used magic to make him instead of conceiving him like normal.

This movie to me even more so is more heartwarming and sad than the first. Shrek while befriending the fairytale creatures still is looked dowm upon by humans. He is still viewed as being an ugly monster as undeserving of love despite compared to the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming who have ugly souls. All the while Shrek's new father in law does not respect him despite he himself basically having been in the same situation as Shrek by not being human and using magic for love

I'm from Mexico, but have some relatives that have moved to the USA, and now they are hardcore Republicans that hate immigrants (specially Mexicans). (I think their idea is now that they are accepted by that society they have to adapt to such society and that involves being hateful toward immigrants) (also I had a friend from Philadelphia who has Vietnamese parents, but his parents didn't thought him any Vietnamese so people (his environment) wouldn't mock him because of accent or such) So I think it's not at all far fetched that Fiona's dad even though is the same as Shrek now hates the idea, because of society standards.
@queenrose2009
@queenrose2009 3 жыл бұрын
@@briankennedy5885 But it still feels hypocritical that he would treat Shrek so horribly because of his appearance even though he was once like that as a frog. Think about it, Harold possible felt insecure of his appearance and maybe people looked down on him cause he was ugly and despite knowing the hurtful feeling of what it's like to be treated like outcast for his looks, he still does the same thing to Shrek. It makes no sense for someone to treat someone so badly even though they themselves went through the exact same issues that they went through.

One thing I love about Shrek and King Harold's dinner scene is that Shrek doesn't seem to care or engage with the insults to himself, but is very angry and makes pointed remarks about how the King and Queen treated Fiona. He doesn't care about what the King thinks of him, it's obvious anyway, he's angry about how they treated the woman he loves, and how they arent happy about how Fiona has loved and accepted her true form.

Shrek was always good at reversing the typical fairytale tropes. An ogre who'd normally be an evil monster in the tales is a good guy, a fairy godmother who'd usually help people forces people who don't love each other into relationships and wants to take over Far Far Away, Prince Charming, unlike the heroic princes is a narcissist who loves himself and a spoiled mama's boy, princesses would normally be damsels but Fiona can actually fight.

I just wanna throw this out there, but Shrek also reverses another trope, specifically in this movie; how genders percieve beauty. If Shrek was actually in the real world, near regardless of time, Fiona should be the one worrying about her appearance, not Shrek. But here, that gender role is reversed, with Fiona already seeing herself as beautiful and Shrek being the one worrying about his own appearance. How the Fairy Godmother interacts with both characters displays this. For anyone saying that the reason why Shrek is insecure about his appearance is due to Fiona's parents, I ask you to first look at the line Shrek says where he says Fiona might not be exactly happy, most likely due to how he looks. I then ask you to go back to the first Shrek movie and ask themselves, why is Shrek so closed off to others? His appreance is definitely a big reason

@Delta_Aves
@Delta_Aves 3 жыл бұрын
Except Quasimodo didn't need to find a true love to be happy and accepted (I mean he does find love in the sequel, but I don't consider it canon), which is another great message, in addition to not having to look conventionally attractive, sometimes you just your friends and a little confidence to be truly happy, not to say finding "the one" is bad, but it can easily take a turn for the worst if one devotes too much of themselves to it.

my theory is that she did it so that no one would 'love' her until her son arrived. She assumed it would work because Charming had the advantage of knowing that he just needed to arrive and kiss her during the daytime, and Fiona's esteem would be in such shambles from the experience that she'd stay with him. So like a very calculated attempt at stripping away Fiona's independence from other's expectations and Fairy Godmother's vision of beauty to such a degree that she'd be unable to say no, and play it off as a beautiful fairytale romance.

It makes sense. She locked her away with that curse so that her son could rescue her and she would marry him. Fiona's father traded this curse for the spell that allowed him to become human instead of a frog. Plus, it reinforced this idea of physical beauty. Do you remember in the first film how desperate Fiona was to lift her curse? She demanded Shrek remove his helmet so she could kiss him (until she realised he was an ogre). She demanded setting up camp so that she would not be seen as an ogre by Shrek and Donkey. She insisted on getting married to Farquaad the same day that she met him. If Charming had rescued her, her desperation to lift the curse would have been enough for her to marry him. It was very calculated from Fairy Godmother and very consistent with her own ideals of beauty. But obviously, things went very wrong when Shrek rescued Fiona.
@marytorres3091
@marytorres3091 3 жыл бұрын
I heard somewhere someone theorized it was basically like an arranged marriage in a sense the fairy godmother curses Fiona her parents lock her in a tower n eventually a prince(aka her son) would rescue basically she was playing the waiting game for a perfect moment to give her son a beautiful royal wife practically gift wrapped, of course shrek interrupted that unknowingly

I like the unique theme the Shrek Universe presents. Many of our stereotypical Fairy Tale Protagonists are shown in a realistic Villainous Light where they are just a bunch of scummy opportunists. While our many stereotypical Fairy Tale Antagonists are show in a Human yet relatable light where they are just a bunch of people trying to fit in the world they’re in. I’m a fan of stories where the Demon is the Hero, while the Angel the Villain.

When I first watch the shrek 2 movie I hate the fact that shrek and fiona want to be ogre. Especially since fiona is very beautiful as a human but after watching it as a teen it make more sense to me why and make me love the movie even more.

Anyone notice that the Fairy Godmother treats Fiona like a human, but treats Shrek like a monster?

I always thought as a bit of a headcanon this fairy godmother was always like the ambitious younger sister of the fairy godmother from Cinderella considering that Fairy Godmother just gave Cinderella that little push to be herself

I think that the biggest aspect of how great a villain she is, which you neglected to mention, is that the movie heavily implies that it was her who put the curse on Fiona to begin with. Possibly something she had decided on ever since she gave Harold his chance at a happily ever after. So she was planning and manipulating Fiona's life path before she was even born

Another excellent video, Sage. And coincidentally, as I wanted to hear it too. On Sunday it occurred to me that Fairy Godmother might just be the one who cursed Fiona in the first place so as to play the long game in her schemes for the throne and I couldn't stop thinking about how cunning she was and how I went years without realising it. This video arrived at the right time for me!

While watching this video essay, I couldn't tear my eyes off the fabric in these movies. Like Fiona's dress at 3:13 or Fairy Godmother's dress when she's in the light at 0:44 till 0:54 or at 2:41 for a closer look. They are so detailed, simple yet pretty. Seriously, a lot of effort went into the designs here and it's not lost on me.

I'm glad you're getting sponsors. For the effort and thought you clearly put into your videos, you deserve to get paid. As for FGM and Shrek as a villain and a hero and as counterparts, the appeal for me is much simpler. Shrek, externally, is kind of a jerk. He's rude, he's crass, rough about the edges and maybe a little too straightforward and honest for his own good, aside from his appearance, but on the inside, he's still fundamentally a good person who, for all his griping, wasn't willing to actually remove the fairytale critters from his swamp in the first film, went out of his way and sacrificed his own happiness for someone else's in the second, and did everything in his power to save the kingdom in the third. FGM, on the other hand, has impeccable manners and pretends to want to help you. She'll flatter you, and even her criticism comes oh so politely, but underneath that thin veneer of civility and good will is a woman who just plain doesn't give a fuck about anyone, not even her own son. The jerk with a heart of gold and a polished turd, respectively.

I could see Fairy godmother as being the sort of antagonist Doug Walker would be fond of as someone insidious who does so with authentic one-sided intent, control and (for now at least) doesn't have those elements diminished b/c of a backstory or prequel which paints them as being motivated out of being misunderstood in their life (Walker's opinion of the live action versions of Maleficent and the recent take on Cruella, to an extent)

Great video. On top of all that you said, the Fairy Godmother was arguably the main antagonist of the entire Shrek series. Everything she did affected the series as a whole, and made many of the plots and subplots possible in the first place. Also, it helped that Jennifer Saunders absolutely nailed it with her voice acting.

Fairy Godmother is a nice twist, while you think she will be a nice fairy like in the fairy tales... instead we get a beautiful surprise that she's a manipulative, ruthless and evil person. And that's really cool, and i really like how she sang "I need a hero" plus in that red dress, damn they did a good job with this one.
