We decided to go out today and do a brief video on Fairy Stone Park located near us in Patrick County, Virginia! Fairy Stone Park has been a tourist attraction for many years and is also a full time campground with a lot of activities for the whole family! Fairy stones are staurolite, a composition of iron aluminum silicate that forms only under extreme heat and pressure, as built up by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Over time, the staurolite weather out to the point were we can collect them today! As staurolite crystals grow, they often intersect to form crosses. The most common shape is a St. Andrew's cross, which looks like an X. Roman crosses are shaped like a plus sign. Maltese crosses, the rarest, have crossbars at the ends. Enjoy the video!!

What fun :) Thank you for the upload! I live in Virginia and it's a beautiful state. I have been curious about that park as I have been very near there - on the Blue Ridge Parkway- which is a lovely stretch of highway to travel in Spring and Autumn, but have not been to the Park. However, I have friends who have been with a Boy Scouts group and they brought me back a lovely fairy stone cross (which they purchased) along with a certificate of authenticity and the legend. I really like it. I wasn't aware the soil was red like that - is it red clay? That stains everything :/ Anyway, you did a great job explaining the terrain for us. Thank you!
