If people would read the bible for themselves instead of depending on others to tell them what it says, then they would understand the gospels are spiritual allegory. Some of it can come from desperation. Some of it results from the fact that these faith healers are often extremely charismatic and good at selling their bogus crap. But a lot of it comes from people raised from a young age in that environment, with preachers who also genuinely believe this stuff. I was one of those people, and when you're told from birth that God frequently heals people, and you regularly hear "testimonies" from people you know who claim to have been healed, it's not that hard to begin to believe it's real. It took me longer than I like to admit to realize the fraudulent nature of it all. I can see how, even to Christians raised in non-Pentecostal denominations, this stuff sounds crazy. But then even a more general belief in God, like you used to have, can sound crazy to people who weren't raised in a Christian environment. Upbringing often has a lot to do with what we tend to accept as real (or, at the very least, feasible) in life.

It's too bad that sideshows have gone away, or you'd be famous - though probably not rich, as the sideshow would keep nearly all of ticket sales.
