Robin, thank you so much for including my channel in your video. I’m really trying to help people think about building out their pantries in a reasonable manner. And let me add that I always love your videos. I love the flow, the artistry of them. And your lighting is always on point. I really enjoyed watching you do the work of reorganizing, each pantry needs a good flow. YourTupperware containers are so nice. I really like that kind of storage but it’s hard to find right now. The riser storage is a great idea. Thanks for sharing that little tip. Love your new haircut.

Faith and Flour, we have an excess of canning jars as we’ve done a “ton or 2” of grout &veggies preservation over the years. If people have glass jars from store purchased sauce, salsa, fruits, jams, etc, these are great for storing beans, lentils, pasta, etc.

Marie Parks LOL yeah my hubby was kinda happy I was a bit of a “hoarder” then. Not a hoarder, but when you live as a broke single mom for over 10 years (& most of your pregnancy in a homeless shelter), I promise it will force you to look for ways to never be without food again for you & your family. So while he saw hoarder, I was prepared for come what may. Guess what? We were just fine. However, he brought home a 50 pound bag of rice.... & we don’t eat rice. In fact we are now giving that thing away after taking some of it for ourselves. Thankfully we have a neighbor who eats it regularly.

Robin, thank you for showing us the pantry ideas, I have one idea for you. Keep your potatoes and onions separately to keep them longer. Also if you really want to keep onions good for a long time, take a pair of cheap pantyhose a drop an onion in then make a knot and drop another onion in. A clothes pin can do the job also. It’s important to not have the onions touch each other. Once the legs are filled, store it in a cool dark place and when you need an onion, just cut below the knot or undo the clothes pin being careful to make sure the next onion is secure. I have found that onions last for months this way. I’m even thinking about doing potatoes this way too.

I switched most of my supplies from a lower level cupboard in my laundry room, up to my linen closet on my main floor nearer to my kitchen (I live in a raised ranch.) I brought the sheets down to the cabinet in the laundry room. I access the food way more often than sheets, and it’s convenient to put the sheets away after laundering. I also date all of my pantry items with a Sharpie as soon as I bring the groceries home. It helps the rotating process immensely.

I live in a small apartment but have good storage. There is a 6 foot closet in the kitchen that serves as the pantry and it s full. I use 2 liter soda bottles to store water and that has filled the closet floor area. I also have the kitty 'feeding station' in a lower cabinet and have a few months supply of food for them. Litter is under the bed. Have to keep them happy too. The linen closet is filled with first aid, medication and a bit of toilet paper for emergencies. I use flannel cloth and a bidet so I don't stock too much tp. My kids used real diapers so this is no different. Lots of good info in this video. Thanks.

Glass containers are not as scarce as you think. Mason jars sure. However, spaghetti sauce & other food items that come in glass jars & other types of containers... recycle those suckers & repurpose them for your food storage. Just wash & dry them thoroughly & you have yourself & “free” glass or plastic container. If you get the plastic containers for peanut butter, etc... same thing. Think outside the box & what you could get as an extra when you up cycle what is already in your home or that you regularly bring home. Cook everything from scratch? Bet your neighbors/friends/family members don’t. See if you can take their “trash” off their hands!!!

I always bought toilet paper when it was on sale, even before the pandemic lockdown started, so when that happened I had enough for probably six months or more. I always had a fully stocked pantry and two freezers so we started buying ahead when we found items we used and started to need. We are in pretty good shape now and could probably eat from our supply for several months. All we need to keep up on is milk, eggs, bread and fresh produce like lettuce and fresh fruit. Also, I've read that if you keep a bay leave in your flour, it will keep the bugs away.

Hi Robin. Great and timely video. My church has stressed food storage for years. When the pandemic hit, I was already prepared with a three month supply of everything I needed. The best idea for water? Purchase a Berkey water filter. That way, you can use it to filter any water you can find, even water from a mucky, dirty river. Seriously, do a search here on KZfaq and you'll see demonstrations of others doing just that. We just received our new Berkey last week and I love it. The filters filter 6,000 gallons before you need to purchase new ones. Berkey estimates the cost of each gallon to be $0.02. So much more affordable than purchasing bottles of water, and it filters out over 200 harmful chemicals, bacteria, etc, while leaving behind the healthful minerals we need. BTW...thank you so much for the time you put into these very helpful videos!!

I found at Walmart at least in our area (Missouri) Hamburger in a tin can. My husband doesn't like me to can Ground Hamburger or meats of any kind. So when I found this canned Hamburger I thought well i will get it and try it. I made vegetable soup with it and he didn't even know that it came out of a can. So meats would be great to have on hand.

I have always kept a stocked pantry, but at the beginning of the pandemic I was feeling very stressed and not sure of exactly what was in my extended pantry. I decided to created a list in OneNote listing all items, quantities and use by dates. It has been great, because OneNote is on my phone, tablet and computer, I always have the list with me. When I find a sale I can check to see how much of any given item is needed. It keeps me from having 50 cans of diced tomatoes, 😄. I did the same for my freezer. Now I feel like I have a good idea of the food we have. I would love to share a picture but I don't think I can in the comments. Stay safe and be prepared everyone.

I lived in NYC during the pandemic, I was locked in/too scared to leave the apt. I waited SIX weeks for a food delivery. I lost 17 pounds, the stores had food but you had to wait a long time on line for limited stuff. I went out on march 18th 2020, after a 2 hour wait I got 2 boxes of pasta, and a frozen fake cheese burger from dollar tree, the supermarkets were like mad houses. My fresh fruit and veggies ran out first, than the soft drinks, good thing i had lots of tea bags, I made iced tea. Then all the dairy ran out, cheese, milk, butter. cold cuts. By the 3rd week it was freezer food and pantry cans. We had a ton of pasta, and olive oil , garlic and red pepper flakes. Load up when you can. If the water got shut off or the power went out , it would have looked like the Alamo around here. Load up, we have .

I also take advantage of sales and stock up then too. A vacuum sealer is a very good easy to keep non canned goods safe for long term storage. I also buy a different food group each month to buy extra of, like pasta and sauce in Sept, rice in October etc. Dont forget the pets food too!

Always keep extra coffee (!), cocoa powder, tea, honey and a back-up supply of boxed creamer alternatives like almond milk or coconut milk creamer. We keep a couple canisters of pure stevia & 5 gallon bucket of honey & pure coconut oil from Tropical Traditions. We make our own almond milk, almond butter & peanut butter as well as hummus (from chick peas) so a supply of these is great. Canned Parmesan cheese is not our first choice of cheese but it stores nicely so we keep a supply of this on hand.

I have always had a well stocked pantry and an extended pantry on my upper closet shelves. My grandchildren have always called these areas "Nana's Store". My tips: I buy items we use when on sale, rotate stock regularly by date and put the "use-by" date on containers if you store without packaging. Also, do not store potatoes with onions because onions produce gases that sprout potatoes.

Stocking up on paper goods is okay, but for a long term shortage, it’s a good idea to transition to cloth. Buy terrycloth baby wipes in large quantities to use in lieu of toilet paper. Buy thin terry washcloths to use as paper towels. Buy durable cloth napkins for dining. Buy cloth feminine products. Have white vinegar and/or bleach on hand to help sanitize after laundering with soap. It may make some squeamish to “wash” and re-use toilet wipes, but this is no different than using cloth diapers. And, it’s what our ancestors used!

I live in AZ.. water naturally in the environment is lacking.. But I think a water purification option should be more vital. We can't store that much water.. Unless folks have the space for big blue barrel s.. I don't.. so I have about 10 gal of water stored around.. but if we lose water for long term here in AZ it means civilization has truly broken down.. and my goal will be to find a resource and purification options. I'm always torn on the dried beans.. because as I just said.. water to cook them may be an issue.. So canned beans while are harder to store, don't need water.. and in fact have liquid already in the can. Just some thoughts that came to my mind when watching. 😁

We usually keep 2-4 weeks of food on hand. This weekend I noticed a few things that were running low, so I need to restock those. We live where there is very limited availability. It makes it easier to plan because you eat the same things all the time. It's easy to know what to stock up on. (I have the same label maker. I love using it.)

I agree. When my sons were pr teen and we moved away from our home to live in Mo. Paying a mortgage and rent for 8 years was trying. I would take my summer paychecks from being a Teachers aid and stock for the Holiday food. My husband lost his job, so we were very frugal, but with ice storms and what not I had to prep. I have been back in South New Mexico for 17 years. Our home we had is now paid off and we are empty nesters. So I still buy in the summer Holiday food. Since the pandemic i have gone past the Holiday food and quickly added everything from 4 months of cat litter and cat food to 2 months of toilet paper cleaners and hygiene. And now food with the winter coming I don't like being in the stores with being in my 60's plus I don't like getting sick as every year I acquire walking pneumonia being a diabetic. I paid $200 dollars to get this food that we eat on a regular basis very quickly before election. This is the wrong way to do it and I know that however I have freezer container and zip locks in plastic boxes under spare bedroom. Thank you

Hoarding food is based on fear. There is a lot of fear right now with all the events in 2020. A plan will help the fear but, really, until things settle down fear is not unreasonable. Thanks for the video. I learned a few things - specifically about the flour.

H2O for the toilet. I re-use plastic jugs that are not food friendly (vinegar, cat food, cat litter, bleach, etc.) And you are so right about the hoarders, the little $^**=$" ! that went out and bought 4 cartloads of t.p., and then had a hissyfit when store manager would not return/refund. I already had 6-8months, so we were good.

Thank you, Robin, for yet another superbly done video. I have been using OXO pops for years, but I too much prefer to use glass wherever possible. I hadn't thought about a shortage of Ball jars, but luckily there are cases of Ball jars in pints and quarts sitting empty on a shelf unit in the garage. Shame on me! (Is that an original sin? :) Out of sight, out of mind, but I'm on it this week. Thanks again for all you contribute to my life. We buy nuts in bulk (10-25#); storing them in a 5 gallon bucket sealed & directly placed on our basement concrete floor keeps them preserved safely. Toasting the nuts in an oven or on the stovetop is a nice way to enhance the flavor.

An F.Y. I. freezing grains, beans, etc. will kill live bugs, but not their eggs. Remember that we live in uncertain times and that storing in glass means if that jar is dropped and/or breaks, you must discard all of the contents because any tiny small shards of glass if the contents are used can shred the interior of your intestines as that food is processed through them.

I consider prepping and hoarding the same as you said in this video. I’ve als got prepared by stocking up on toiletries which is awesome!!! I do the plastic bag thing for flour but I didn’t kno bout the eggs in beans and flour. We love our label maker I can’t spell either. We always keep extra dog food in, recently it’s been difficult to get where we live but I’ve found it by shopping around.

This video is so timely, Robin. I have been gradually stocking long term food storage in my basement. I spent about $300 extra in July to jump start things. Now I am just going to buy a few extra things whenever I shop. I have also been canning. I got free grapes that I picked at a friends house and made jelly. She also gave me some pears from one of her trees. I bought peaches at the grocery store when they went to $0.88/lb a few weeks ago and then canned them. I feel like it is important to practice skills. I have also invested in some 5 gallon buckets for beans, flour, sugar and rice. I may add more. I am still thinking through what I should add to my pantry. I really want it to be a working pantry. Ultimately, perhaps I will have 1 year, but I am starting slow like you. 1 month....2 months...3 month, etc.

Hi Robin - What a wonderful idea for a video during this time. I have always kept an inventory list of foods and been well stocked with paper goods and disinfectant wipes since I have a big storage area and this helped me in the early weeks of the pandemic but now am trying to keep restocked but things are not that readily available here in my area so its kinda hard. As someone who has lived on the Texas Gulf Coast all my life I am always purposeful in things I do in hurricane season like keeping my freezer low in inventory and my pantry filled with foods I can eat without benefit of power. Even if a storm does not directly hit my area, we still are sometimes without power for long periods of time. I have a hint that has helped me with freezer items. Sometimes when we return from evacuation our power might be on but we don’t know if it was out for an extended period since the food is all cold or frozen. Also, when your power is out for a long time it is almost impossible to get that smell out of your fridge. Now when I leave I put all my food in the freezer in trash bags. Then I put a bowl of ice cubes in the freezer. If I come back and the cubes are still in their original shape I know the power was not out and I can take the food out of the bags but usually I leave it in the bags until hurricane season is over. If the cubes have melted and then froze back in a different shape I know that the power was off a long time and I just take the bag of food out and dispose of it. I have learned this the hard way. Thanks for showing us how you are preparing we all need help with this. Love in Christ!

We put this test last week for Hurricane Laura. My husband returned to our house to start the generator within 24 hours after landfall. Because I placed everything in the freezer in trash bags, everything was frozen. Even the condiments in the refrigerator were still cold. We only have to replace the fresh produce that I threw away before we left.

I have accumulated atm 100 Litres of bottled Spring water for my family of 4, of which I have allowed for 2L per person [recommended max for drinking in Aus] and allotted a total of 2L for cooking if needed and cleaning etc per day. So we have fresh water for 10 days on hand right now. I found a great product called Aquatabs which makes doubtful/contaminated water safe to drink after 30 minutes, so invested in 10 packs of 50 for less than $115, which then makes another 500L of water available so to speak, giving us then 60 days of water using water and purfiying from a source such as a local lake or creek. My next step is to secure water for us long term and will be to buy 4 Lifestraws which makes safe up to 1000L of water per unit, so a couple of those will allow us to drink potable water for up to 500 days each family member. So for prepping I would definitely be looking at water purification products as well as having fresh water on hand. US gallon = 3.785 litres (approx) for any conversion needed.

Faith and Flour it takes time. You definitely store what you and your family will eat, it just what people tell you to stock up on so it doesn’t become waste. I have a bigger garden this year and I learned how to can in June. I’ve been canning meat when I find a good deal on it and definitely canning and dehydrating food from my garden. I like storing food in glass also. Save the glass jars from your pasta sauce, jelly and of those things and you can store some of your dried goods and things that you eat all the time in them. Shelf stable milk from the Dollar Tree. When you chill it in the refrigerator it really is good. I don’t taste any difference in it and the milk I buy at the grocery store. The list making that you mentioned will really help you figure out what are the most important things to stock up on.
Doing This Instead Of Studying.. 😳
