Peter. Thank you for giving your time. I do feel that the video could be better presented if you had some real antique vases that could be placed side by side to enforce the difference. I am a potter and I have travelled China quite often. We have a saying. Go to the antique market and find a real antique made yesterday. LOL

Hello! i was about to ask the same thing. I'm studying to be an appraiser and try to learn every way i can, including your videos here. Thank you so much for giving us your time and knowledge! it would most certainly be more helpful if when showing a fake, you could be more specific. When you say "this dragon's tale is wrong", you don't at all explain what exactly is wrong, is it the shape, the thickness, the color, the direction, etc... You just state it's wrong and move on, with no explanation or an example of how a genuine dragon's tale of that style should look like. I see you said you have videos with comparisons, so i'll go look for those, again thank you very much for this contribution! Zara

What I got from this video is, lots of people want a comparison on each piece, real to fake. Almost each site wants free appraisals. Do you realize the training and time to be an expert in a field? And yet, people almost always want to send a picture and get free appraisals on their items. Sometimes, that might happen, but, I’d say not very often.

You can call them fakes but the chinese potters have been "replicating" and enhancing thier own native aesthetic for thoisands of years. Some of the "fakes" are still amazing works and are really contemporary chinese ceramics. In 100 yesrs theyll be considered to be pdrt of the legitimate chinese ceramic progression. ...im saying that if its modern chinese and you like it....buy it and have a part of this incredible artistic ethos.

We did a few videos a couple years ago on a couple of auction houses in Georgia....they sent me a cease and desist letter from their lawyers, I posted it on our blog. A few years ago a dealer of fakes threatened to come to Gloucester and said "i'm gonna kill you and you won't see it coming"...I promptly sent him my address and phone number to make an appointment...never heard another word from him. +Denise Turner later copies lack naturalistic looking drawing and appear too stiff and contrived, you need to see many over time. Its hard, but after a while the copies begin more and more to immediately look wrong. Spend a little time poking around on Christie's website in the POST AUCTION area, they have some terrific enlargeable images to study. we also have on our site at Bidamount a section with past Christie's and Bonhams Flip Book Catalogs that can be enlarged also. Pointing out supposed defects in supposed fakes doesn’t really educate unless the alleged fakes are compared to actual examples of the real thing... With respect as a collector only, this is why one is left wondering whether the nit picking is merely nothing more than someone’s opinion which may be flawed...
@PeterCombs6 жыл бұрын
THe video was one of the first we did several years ago, that said, the differences in the areas of foot rims, trimming and color, as well as texture are decidedly different when comparing old authentic examples and modern ones. Being very precise isn't possible unfortunately as there so many variables to deal with in every period with every type. Single aspects like kiln grit mean little, the piece needs to be examined in it's entirety which gets easier after handling thousands of pieces. Best, Peter

This was not helpful. Using words like “terrible” and “ridiculous” does not give a novice any concrete tools to help them distinguish a genuine antique from a fake one. What may seem obvious to you is not necessarily so easy for the lay person. Could you possibly show comparisons of authentic marks and imitations? Same with the feet of vases, etc.
