Fake Grading Companies - Fake Slabs - What Graded Coins To Avoid!

You should avoid these grading company holders! Encapsulated coins have been around for decades and the Internet has brought about a bunch of self slabbing graded coins.
People buy plastic slabs, print a label on their printer and put whatever they want on the label, then sell them to people. You need to know who is doing this and which companies to trust and how to identify fake PCGS, NCG, ANACS holders.

my grandpa got me into coin collecting...but he also never trusted trading companies...he always felt they would swap his pristine coins for the Lesser quality ones and mailed back to him .and he always refer to graded slap coins is conference I'm talking even Ms 64 65 66...he did not like not being able to handle the coins..and I guess I inherited most of those beliefs...

@@juliekelliher8259 wow, I guess I can't blame him for lack of trust -- the grading companies deserve a lack of trust. HOWEVER, they are good for determining authenticity if not a grade! And frankly, I cannot always tell which coins have been cleaned.

Per Wikipedia: “In 2007, the rare coin industry's leading dealer association, the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), released the results of a survey of major coin dealers who gave their professional opinions about 11 certification services. PCGS and NGC were rated "Superior" overall, with ANACS and ICG deemed "Good". PCI and SEGS were listed as "Poor", while called "Unacceptable" were Accugrade (ACG), Numistrust Corporation (NTC), Hallmark Coin Grading Service (HCGS), American Coin Club Grading Service (ACCGS), and Star Grading Services (SGS).”

You just reminded me of several slabbed coins I bought(w/ some other items), a few years back, in one of those "estate" auctions. The name is INB on the coins. The printing is even faded so badly, I need a magnifying glass to read them. Several are marked MS70. I know I didn't pay a lot for them, as I have always been a suspicious person.(ex-MIL called me a Philadelphia lawyer because I wouldn't fall for her "jokes") I had even put a note on them that the company overgrades coins.

That I have come across anyways. Anyone buyin coins in driving distance of this shop would be soft not check them out. I remember buying some MS70, hahaha ms70, nickels off ebay in some junk holder years ago when i didnt know any better. Thankfully i was smart enough to realize a ms70 should at least be in better shape than the ones i get in change...lol....lesson learned...thankfully it wasnt an expensive one. Another comment I thought about towards the end of this video is the fact, people should now list their coins as being Gem BU or Gem BU+ on eBay if they are raw. According to standards used by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and sources such as "The Official Red Book - A Guide Book of United States Coins," for a coin to be Gem BU it has to at least grade out MS65. Thanks again for another great information filled video.

The collecting community should absolutely boycott any purchase of a collectible coin, gemstone, antique, watch, etc being sold by anyone in China. With very few exceptions, you will be getting a fake item. If people stopped buying from all Chinese sellers, the effort to produce these fraudulent items will discourage the criminals from making & marketing them. Granted some legit Chinese sellers may initially feel the pain, but it should encourage them to demand that the Chinese government begins to seriously police their dealers. The word needs to be spread loud & clear & worldwide that anything purchased from China is most likely a fake. We must dry up this market in fake collectibles or the entire system will be so damaged/contaminated that these markets will never recover.

I bought a coin from a shop in my town that was graded by a company that I don't believe exists any more NNCS - National Numismatic Certification Service in July of 1986. It was an MS64 $1 1898-O. I was able to get the coin regraded by NGC at MS64. That's personally my only interaction with anything besides PCGS and NGC. Great video, videos like this are very helpful for those who are newer to coins and might not know what to look out for. Not too long ago on eBay, there was a seller selling coins graded by one of these "fake" companies. I always make sure to read the feedback of sellers that I am newly buying from. Thanks

Old IGS holders circa 2000 can have some good coins in them. There’s a newer IGS slab that’s pretty suspect from what I’ve read. Best thing to do if you’re wanting rock solid investment returns is to buy graded from the top tier graded slabs. Third party is a mine field.

Thank you so much for teaching us about safe & fake grading companies. I'm new at this & really want to learn as much as possible so I'm not "taken." So far I ask at the bank, & just going thru coins coming to me thru the stores I shop at. I haven't gotten into buying, except for what I find during my day. I find this to be fun, want to keep it this way. Two days ago I found from the bank's cash machine a brand new uncirculated $20.00 star note bill. I was thrilled!!! For now I guess you could call it "zen" way keeping it a fun approach." Eventually I would like to start purchasing. Until that stage I really want to be further educated. I thank you so much for enlightening myself & others like me to have this information available. I would like to eventually send out coins for grading. At that point I will refer to your charts. Thank you again.

Thankyou great information here in Canada there are grading companies that use deception to sell coins but I as a collector always tell people to consult a dealer before buying. I live in Halifax and we only have one coin dealer in the city but he is very good and always ready to help a collector no matter if you are experienced or a new one. I have been collecting for 50 plus years and I can tell you that even the Royal Canadian mint has used deception at times to sell coins but the Canadian mint is privately owned now and considers themselves a business but they were able to somehow allowed to use and keep the RCM name and people still think that if its the RCM it has to be good well buyer beware I tell people.

I believe that I commented on this before. Ebay only allows the top 4 grading companies and all the others have to be listed as uncertified without indication of a numerical grade. Report the sales! Use the drop down menu and select "prohibited and restricted items" under report category and then under reason for report select "stamps, coins and currencies" in the last one "detailed reason" select "uncertified coins" At this point select continue and you will be able to type in additional information about the sale of the coin. Ebay pays attention to this, i've been able to have many sellers removed by reporting them in this manner. If you select listing practices for the report it will likely go unnoticed. I've even seen sellers that list coins showing a label without a slab. Some of the sellers are listing a graded coin with a certification number in the details of the coin and its raw! Unscrupulous sellers and counterfeiters will not likely ever go away but if we all get involved we can make a positive impact to slow down the crooks and force ebay to make changes. One of the sites that I frequently use does this and all the members report any given coin sales that are posted, it does work!! E PLURIBUS UNUM "out of many one"

Those single bid auctions are still bids. It's another account that makes one bid, wins it, then the seller cancels and relists. They don't have to pay fees this way and they artificially inflate prices. Ebay needs to stop letting sellers cancel sales after they're over. That's the only way this will stop.

Daniel, this was such an informative video and it hits home. My Grandson got a coin back from PCGS I saw it. It didn't have a grade on it or much of anything. Guess what and I saw it. It was put in upside down. Now if he wants to get more info on it it will cost him money. Insurance, postage that he has already paid to have it redone. He is a member of them. He has sent so many to them. One Lincoln was it looked to me and him. Triple stamped and so much going on with this coin. It isn't in the best shape but all the things I saw wrong on that coin was incredible. He looked it up to see if anything like that had been found. He didn't find anything. I know this isn't your problem. We're both confused by what PCGS did. They didn't tell him anything on the slab. He called them and nothing. I don't sell my coins or even send then in to be graded. My Grandson has a uncanny eye for this kind of thing. He has been doing this for over three years. Sorry for the rant we both are confused by this so called reputable company.

PCGS doesn't label them if they're not true mint errors. You also must send them in under their mint error tier. I also suggest you and your grandson to look at the sold error auctions at Heritage and error-ref.com. All major errors worth anything have been classified, there's just only so much that can happen during the current minting process. So finding some new fan-dangled error is not likely. The latest dramatic error was trapped burnished ball in a golden dollar, this appears to have been an anomaly but still a possibility considering the currency minting process. You can look up multiple struck coins at Heritage and match your coin to what it should look like.

@@CoinHELPu I will remind him but he already knows this. He checks out his coins on all the sites. I don't know if he know about this one. Thanks for replying. I just wrote it down to give it to him. In case he hasn't heard of this one. I'm truly sorry to bother you.

Feel free to add the MNS/MNS (Michigan Masters Numismatic service) TPG Morgan I showed on your FB page, don't see that one listed. According to Coin Community forums: MMNS did have one innovative slab idea. Back before the edgeview type slabs MMNS produced what they called their Holoview slabs. These had a beveled mirror built into the slab around the coin that allowed you to see the entire edge of the coin while looking straight on at the coin.

Thank you sharing from your heart! I learned so much! I hope to find a pro in the SF area who is as savvy and cares to teach those of us who are new, passionate, and honest businesspeople. A righteous rant! It comes when I am learning that there has to be other ideas how to use my collection besides sitting in a storage safe. I'm open to your ideas. Thanks again,
