Awesome work Dave I’m 33 work on the railway sick and tired of never being home or around I’ve been watching this while at work think I found a career change I’m from Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia I think I’ll start with my backyard and see if I really enjoy sculpting

Thanks for mentioning the glove part, I noticed when making my first water feature that the cement was getting through the holes of my gloves and really drying them out and sticking to the skin. I'll definitely wear some inserts or different gloves next time.

I just now saw your post. Yikes! Thanks for tge kind words firstly. Appreciate it. On adhesion with subsequent coats or layers of cement, mortar, or concrete I always add an acrylic add-mix to the mud.AND pre-moisten the dry or old set concrete/mortar surface. Otherwise the water gets pulled out of the new mud and can cause it to set too fast and be weaker with a poor bond. Hope that helps. Be well, Cheers, Mr. Dave. 👍😎

Hi Mr. Dave, first of all thanks for your tips and advice. I loved your video explaining all of the different ways to tint the fake rocks. You mention many things that I have been thinking about, but didn't know they have been tested and work well! This opens up a world of possibilities. In this video I think I heard you say that you are using SPEC mortar plus Concrete in a four to one ratio to build up the formations. (Is that right?) Also, I'm wondering if you use pre-mixed concrete and if so which one? Thanks again for your videos... I appreciate your knowledge and that you are willing to share it!

Well hello Miss Michele! I checked out your channel and it was so cool to see that you are a potter and ceramist! That was where my creative journey began. 😄 My dad bought me an electric Lockerbie kick wheel when I was 18. Still have it and would love to throw again. Anyway, to your questions, yes I use bagged concrete, mortar or any other cementatious materials. In terms of creative options you can't be these materials for durability and low cost! Dave, thanks for the great videos, which have helped me maintain my sanity of the past 1 1/2 years. I live in Northern Illinois, winter temps here can drop below -25-30'. Can I still build artificial rocks here? Unfortunately, we have no availability for shotcrete in my area. Thanks, Appreciate your faith, a light in the current darkness. Brian

Hi Brian, thanks for your very kind comments. Ya, this past year has been nuts. And it appears the crazies are just gonna get more nuts! But God wins in the end. And I know where I'm going. THAT is going to insanely cool! Anyway, yes, if people build with concrete then faux rock can be built. But I would contact local concrete contractors and ask them how they build their sidewalks, driveways etc. How much rebar do they use and what kind? Do they add any additives to the mud? Once you know those tricks they could be added to the normal methods of rockwork construction. So for maintenance on this, do we need to seal it with anything?

All areas that will have water running over it or standing, (ponds) will be water proofed after which a texture coat will be added. Then final painting and that's it. Some rock guys seal their rocks but I've not been doing that. Just high quality exterior latex house paint. Anyway, hope that helps. Cheers, Mr. Dave :)

what is the minimum thickness of the concrete coverage on the rebar?

Wanna aim for at least 2" plus minimum... Bottom line is any amount is better than none! :)

If you're adding cementitios materials ino the mud that shpuld happen right after it's been applied. After that it's good to wait at least a week or more to get a more accurate color representation of the finished concrete/mortar color prior to psinting. BUT you could also experiment with adding color/acid/paint right away to see what happens. Could be a cool effect! 👍😎
