This was originally a full round log of Black Cherry. This is the third and final piece I got from it. It's also my favorite of all three. I did have to do a lot of work to make this a complete live edge bowl and that is the focus of this video. Finished in shellac.

You know I love you guys because I've told you before so I won't go into that. You also know I've been sick so I won't go into that, either. I can only tell you, I'm still sick and my videos will be sporadic. PLEASE, not looking for sympathy. I hope to be back and I expect to be back. When is the big question and I do not know the answer. Let's just enjoy each others company when we can. Phil

I realize times are tough when our health is at risk, I was in my local emergency ward when told a helicopter was coming to take me to a specialty hospital & did I want a priest to travel with me. That was 2 years ago, friends & turning got me through some tough times & I hope the same for you!

Great to see you back at the lathe Phil. Your comments about the glued on bark made me smile. Reminded me of a comedy sketch of someone trying to play piano. He was told "you've hit all the right notes, just not in the right order😊.

Youpie! My favourite turner posted a video. I love the stops, so we can see where the piece is at. Phil, your comments on what you observe as you turn, let's us hear what you are thinking and where the piece is taking you; that is what makes us feel as though we are there with you, helping to make the piece. Glad for the tip on not overdoing it with the CA-glue. I giggled at the "Funnel Club" comment. Thanks, Phil, for the tip on how to prevent piercing through the bottom of the bowl, by positioning the end of the rest close to the inner surface of the bowl; smiled again when you added "You just have to remember to l o o k ! " You must have observed a teacher closely (or been one) during your life because you are a natural teacher. It's pretty cold in Quebec; - 22C on Thursday. Hope your weather out West does not throw you too many curves during the remaining weeks of winter. I love each season. Happy Valentine's Day in advance, in case the next turning comes after the 14th. Glad you are doing what you need to, to heal; my friend says "homemade soup and meat for healing; ferget the bread, pasta and desserts". ;) Love ya too, man! Take cake.

Wow. A really nice treat! My Thursday evening “Phil Fix”...well, that little piece of cherry came from a small tree that was on the edge of a soybean/corn/tobacco field in northwest Sumner County, Tennessee. The old tree got diseased and we had to cut it. You’ve turned a couple of the other pieces, but this time you’ve outdone yourself. Glad to see the old tree is making so many folks happy. And you know that piece comes with a warranty. Thanks for making me, and many others, smile tonight.

Don't fret...when we get a video, we get a video. Take care of yourself! BTW, I've been watching regularly (even watched all your previous videos) and I don't recall seeing you glue bark back to the natural edge. Great to see you in action again Phil! The bowl is great as well. If you had not showed us the missing bark I doubt anyone would have even know you added it on. I used to use something called Liquid Gloves made by Avon. That was many years ago. I remember using it at work when we had to make fiber glass and epoxy laminated core boxes. As long as you did not wash your hands before you were done and forget to reapply it worked great. Not sure I still have any but I had a tube in my tool box so I will check it out. Good to see you and looking forward to the next one when you are up to it. Take care my friend, Gary

@@janetalexander122 __ Janet: I agree with you; 100%. As for Phil's healing journey: he's a pretty down to earth guy; I just know that all the common sense we hear in his voice in his videos will be the same thing that guides his decision on his path to healing. I trust his judgement. The new 'health fad' (if you will) is 'low carb'. They say it helps with any kind of inflammation, so maybe he'll try that. The so called Keto craze must have some truth to it.

When Phil's in his workshop, all's right with the world. When he's not, I worry. But don't rush to be back. Take all the time you need to get well. It's nice know the man behind the bowl gouge. Thanks for posting the video of yourself from when you worked at the tax office.

I love that bowl, Phil. I've missed you but getting your health back is more important than videos. You've been an inspiration for turning wood with faults. It's a fun challenge for me and challenges my skill and techniques. The pieces I've given away to friends had cracks, bark inclusions, worm holes and knotholes. Some pieces had a flat sides with saw marks. For me, this shows the character and tough life the tree had. My friends also loved the look. A bowl with perfect wood and finish is very nice but I think I enjoy the imperfections more which is fortunate because most of my wood have these. Consider them as natural works of art.

Lol.. I remember that same type of bowl. My in-laws had one or two out every holiday. Phil has inspired me also. Turning really caught my eye (& my hubbies too) so I started watching for a good price on a "beginners" lathe and found one at a pawn shop. Bought it and brought it home and am going to set up shop in our small attached garage. Ended up sidelined due to spinal surgery but Spring will be here before we know it. I will be bringing Phil out with me thanks to a notebook my hun got me 😊. Let's keep praying that Phil finds relief for his health issues. Good luck to us all..new & old turners alike..

This is such a lovely piece! Looking great! You really do a great job with the natural side of turning. I think that's what I'm going to do once I get going. I might even try to get a sand-o-flex, too! And just like Mr. Baxter said: you inspire me!

Awe man....you just made my Thursday evening a WONDERPHIL one! It is great seeing you but don't over do it, get yourself 100%. I turned an aromatic cedar bowl that I could have sworn it was one of your logs, this thing had so many bark and branch inclusions I couldn't tell which way the grain was running, I was thinking to myself,,,what would Phil do? If I had a way to send a photo of it I surely would. Take care of yourself.
