I've been trying to do this, but the target is not showing up on the sms screen. Did you do anything with the radar prior to this? Maybe the AI mission gen doesn't preplan targets properly, and the bombs don't work right?

Unless something changed with the new update it should work as described. Make sure you click dance the DTC
