This falconry video discusses the merits and abilities, and the drawbacks of using Cooper's hawks and Aplomado falcons for hunting quail.
Thank you to John Griggs for letting me film his cooper's hawk in several of the shots.
Thank you to HayleyBusch for letting me film her Aplomado falcon in several of the shots.

In the end it ends up being a question of affinity. The Aplomado is the most flown hawk in Brazil, I believe that our subspecies (the smallest) has the greatest potential when it comes to proportionality. 200 gram birds doing 10 minute chases to much bigger prey, it's for endurance that they evolved. On my channel you can see a young male doing over 140 attacks in a lurefly session without much effort.

Great video Ben. Loved it! I've flown two Coopers hawks. One was an eyas which I mismanaged. That is the only bird in my falconry career I have ever been afraid of. I renamed him Mad Max and he was either sweet, or he'd slip into the most evil mood (you could see it come over him like he was falling under a spell and it seemed pretty random to me). Several times he went at my face and luckily that only ever happened when he was secured with jesses. But the ferocity of his attacks to my face were so intense and so quick it was insane. I couldn't even blink and he had bounced against the jesses three times. The second was a family bird and I made another mistake Ben mentioned here which was flying a Coopers while having another bird. After that experience I promised myself I wouldn't fly another accipiter of any kind until all of my kids were at least 18. I still have a 16 year old so two more years and maybe I'll try again :P.

Just wanted to say thanks Ben. Your videos helped me pass my falconry exam and have been extremely helpful on my falconry journey. I’m happy to say I’m now on my third successful hunt with my RT. Had him for a month now. Would love to see a video about tips and tricks for squirrel hawking. Keep up the good work, you’re killing it with these videos.

Love love love these videos. Really informative and you definitely know your stuff. Not sure how convenient it is for you, but would you be able to do any field videos? Or hands on videos with the bird's?

So like you I have flown 20-+ coops in SoCal on quail prior to my first and only Aplomado. I flew her for 5 seasons. The first and last season she was grabbed by a red tail while on a quail. She accepted the hood well but bated almost constantly in it. A couple oservations. Coops are free Aplos are still pretty expensive mine was 2300. 2 x she got loose in the yard, both times she did not go anywhere and was recovered with little incident..They definitely bond more readily and more strongly than a coops. She was not super fond of riding the fist but would come back when called 100x /day. She refused to go into a forest type situation and would just fly out. She hated strange people and dogs and would not fly with them in the field at all. She took many quail , but failed to connect with chukar which almost all of my female coops caught easily.

@Ben Woodruff another great vid Ben. Rabbit populations here in Colorado are super low and it’s really got me considering my next bird. How is your Lanner vid coming along? Very interested in the different flight styles, wondering how they would do off the fist at flushed birds in broken juniper country.

Nice! Thank you. I am just getting an aplomado flying in the field right now and Im learning a lot. There isnt a lot of in depth content about them that I could find other than a few hunting videos and your species profile of them. How about a comparison video of a merlin to an aplomado?

If I have time to hawk 5 times a week a coopers is best. If I only have 2--4 times a week aplo is better.

That would be great. I’ve read a little about them and they sound awesome. A Saker x Aplomado would be very interesting as well.

@@barnabas111 I have never heard of A Saker × Aplomado Hybrid and never saw one either so if you have seen one or own one I would greatly appreciate it. Please send me photos & videos of the bird or let me know if you seen one.

I don’t know of anyone breeding Saker x Apolomado but I just thought that since their hunting styles are similar that they might make an interesting bird. I might try a breeding project in the future myself. @@keerthivasannambiraju955

Also thought the Aplomado has also been found closely related to the Red headed Merlin / Red necked Falcon (Falco chicquera).

Sorry hit the wrong button. I've been flying an imprint Aplomado tiercel for 10 yrs. Never experienced a reluctant to chase quarry. At higher weight the intent to kill is reduced. Here in the Midwest you will need a good dog to fly bobwhites.

Female eastern coops are better than most male NA gos on rabbits especially if you have cover. Saying that they lose many rabbits a RTH is a better option on fur.
