I met a Falkland Islander some years ago. A lovely fellow. He had an accent that had any and all English people fooled as to his homeland. He told me that virtually no native Argentinian people lived on the Falklands. I have no reason to believe that he wasn't telling the truth. Thatcher's actions were correct as the vast majority of the people on the Islands regarded themselves as British.
@zurdomasista Жыл бұрын
I have my reservations. The Islanders do not say "countryside". They use the word "camp" from the Spanish word "campo" (countryside). Besides, UK supported the Junta before the war
@mylesblake2026 Жыл бұрын
@@zurdomasista Ur point? Just because Argentina and The Falklands were both ruled by Spain, that doesn't mean that Argentina have any claim to them, aside from that they're kind of close. It'd be like Australia saying they have the right to invade and reclaim New Zealand.
@zurdomasista Жыл бұрын
@@mylesblake2026 this is not just a geopolitical issue but cultural. Before the war Many islanders spoke fluent Spanish. But the Junta screwed the cultural assimilation. Now kelpers try to not speak Cervantes language which is absurd. Spanish language is part of their culture
@mylesblake2026 Жыл бұрын
@@zurdomasista Yh, because the Falklands used to be part of Spain lmfao. Just because some islanders happen to speak good Spanish, doesn't mean that Argentina have any territorial claim.
@ignacioorona345810 ай бұрын
My good Sir, Argentinians don't live in the islands because this is strictly forbidden. In Southamerica borders are mostly open: This means that a Peruvian can move to Argentina without any problems but this does not seem to apply in the Islands where you need a special permission, proving once more that this is still a Colonial enclave. Hopefully one day the UK will learn (like it's happening to France with it's colonies in Africa) that Europeans have to leave Southamerica by itself. The colony days are over!

As an Argentine I want to apologise for the invasion that the junta initiated years ago. It was a senseless war to begin with out of desperation of the junta regime. The Falklands are indeed British, but here in Argentina we call the islands Las Malvinas. Viva Argentina! Viva Britannia!

I've been a life long Socialist and Labour voter. But regardless of my political differences, Margaret Thatcher stood up for Britain during this turbulent moment in time and also gave the green light to the SAS during the Iran Embassy Siege. These were pivotal moments in this country's history, unpopular decisions much the same as some of Churchill's during WWII, but proved correct in hindsight. I'm fucking fed up with you weak kneed freaks dismissing strength in the preservation of this country as a bullying tactic. Strong leaders are born out of crisis.

@HK_Nation9 жыл бұрын
Steve Mcgill 18tangles The lease you are referring to was the Second Convention of Peking, signed in 1898 giving the New Territories to Britain for 99 years. The main city of Hong Kong, meaning Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were ceded to Britain in 1842 and 1860 respectively, both in perpetuity. And so, China had no legal right to take over those territories. And in the 1980s, HK's water supply was almost independent from China, while southern China was in fact partly dependent on Hong Kong for power, so those threats were useless.
@darrenbinns18279 жыл бұрын
HK_Nation 1841 No they werent useless, China was more than capable of turning off the colony's water supply, but it didnt matter, the time was up in 1997, end of.
@HK_Nation9 жыл бұрын
Steve Mcgill First of all in the 1980s, Hong Kong was not dependent on China for water, threatening to cut Hong Kong's water supply would have been useless since we were pretty much self-sufficient. Second of all, time was not up in 1997. Time was up for the Second Convention of Peking. Time was not up for the Treaty of Nanking and the First Convention of Peking. It wasn't China's goodwill that allowed Britain to negotiate the SAR status.

Attlee, MacMillan and Wilson were objectively better Prime Ministers. The first 3 years of Thatcher's rule were disastrous, most of her own party were aghast at her completely botched economic policy that saw 3 million unemployed and 17 per cent interest rates, far worse than anything than had been seen under the Callaghan government. Thatcher is lucky the Argentines invaded the Falklands, otherwise her political career would be over. After '87 Thatcher lost the plot, introducing the poll tax and generally acting like some weird hermit living in her Downing Street bunker, her own party were so embarrassed they got rid of her.

Country distanced away about 12,000kilometre tried its best to keep its territory and achieved success, the country that claims land less than 1500kilometre away and did its action to recapture its territory, and they failed to take it. Therefore it isn't Argentinian
@hagamapama7 жыл бұрын
There is no "recapture." Argentina never properly owned the Falklands. No nation has a right to an island if another nation has a prior claim. Yes she did have balls. Big brass ones in her handbag which she used frequently which is much more than I can say for many other male heads of government. Wuss cookies they were in comparison to Maggie. Because of Maggie and Ron we are not speaking Russian today and because of Maggie the Falkland Islands remain BRITISH!!!

Love or Hate Mrs T.This was the last time the UK couldn't be taken advantage of.She got our Lads to take the Territory with minimal resources compared to Argentina. She was a proper Leader.

How interesting that in those days Labour demanded a strong military response. Much different to the wokerati on that side today.

This is very useful knowledge now with the conflict in Ukraine. It takes strong leader, such as her, to deal with tyrants. True then, true now.

Never mind god bless Thatcher...god bless Sir Henry Leach. Without that gentlemen telling Thatcher what the Armed Forces could do, and how it was going to be done, she would have given up because her, Carrington, Nott and the rest of her sycophants were clueless and were ready to give up. And she just sat there taking the credit, being lauded. And in truth, her and her governments short sightedness and ineptitude caused this conflict. She gave Argentina the green light to invade.

This is the only thing I like about Thatcher. I consider her and evil witch but she did the right thing here and I doubt anyone else would have had the resolve to liberate the Falklands.

Argentine foreign ministry officials said they would prosecute oil companies operating near the Falkland Islands. The officials said companies active there were operating illegally in Argentine territory. This came after the three British oil companies announced new oil and gas finds north of the islands, and as Argentina marked the 33rd anniversary of the war with the UK over the islands. Tensions between the UK and Argentina were already running high after the UK announced it would spend £280m over the next 10 years on improving defences on the islands.

THE ARGENTINES TOOK THE MALVINAS ISLANDS IN 1982 BECAUSE THERE WAS HARDLY ANYBODY LIVING THERE. THERE WERE ONLY 2000 PEOPLE AND 10000 SHEEP LIVING THERE THE MALVINAS IS STILL UNDERPOPULATED TO THIS DAY.

+rcx8666c It does not matter that just a few THOUSAND live there almost 3,000 people is hardly any body, they are thousands in numbers, but even if they had no one living there you can not defy International law, the rights of soverign countries and go about seizing what you want. You say thousands is not a lot we say it is....your lawless thugs whom were defeated.

+18tangles 'AY! You wanna fucking dance? The only reason we didn't fight 90% of the war for you (again! And probably just by showing up as that would have been enough to send them running.) is because the junta was keeping the commies out. The US had to play the long game. Who else was going to beat the soviets? You? How about a little gratitude for what help we did provide against our interests, Hm? How about that.

The Argentinians were gambling that we would prevent British naval power from ever reaching the Falklands -- Monroe Doctrine, remember? We're technically supposed to prevent European intervention in New World affairs. We ignored our alliance obligations and our treaties with the Argentinian government by NOT stopping Britain from ever getting as far as the Falklands. And don't even pretend we couldn't have stopped you had we decided to try. If Reagan decides that the game against Communism is more important than the sovereignty of the Falklands, they'd be the Malvinas today. Just saying.
