Another beautiful fall day spent doing one of my favorite chores - cutting firewood at the cabin. In this video I put my Husqvarna and Arctic Cat ATV to work and do some low impact firewood harvesting. I also talk about some of my thoughts on forest management. A great way to spend a day - the way life should be.

My Grandpa used to come out and watch me split firewood. He would stand there for a while, and then say; "I need to go sit down for a while. Watching you work hard like that, is really making me tired!" :)

I have spent the whole day watching your videos and after each one I wish I was there with you. I'm 70 years old and would love the life you live. I live in New York City but was born and brought up in upstate NY. Always said I was going back but between wife, kids,and grandkids never left the city. Like you said in one of your videos I used to love the solitude and freedom to do what I wanted to do. Keep these videos coming. Thanks a lot.

When we were teenagers and for whatever reason got hot under the collar, we were sent out to split firewood the old-fashioned way, with a maul and wedges. It was a good life lesson on how to channel anger.

Could not agree with you more. Property management makes for healthy forest. Thinning the canopy allowing the sun to hit the forest floor promotes new growth. I own land that is mostly mixed hard wood and I don’t have the time to go out there and do that very much, but some day when I’ll retire I’ll stay in shape doing just that👍

Just came across your channel, as a woodlot owner myself I agree with most of the points you made about forest management. I personally do like to leave plenty of dead standing trees as it makes for good habitat for bugs which in turn feed the birds. I also like to make small clear cuts just to let the native grasses come out with a few trails to connect them all, I have owned my property for nine years now and have noticed a significant increase in wildlife population building different habitats. I have so many Hares and Grouse on my land right now that I have even caught several different Bob cats on my camera. I always enjoy seeing what other people are doing with their piece of Eden.

Enjoyed the video, especially you piece on forestry management. A lot of people do not understand that a person doing good forestry management practices on their land does not lead to irreparable damage. Individual woodland owners want to enjoy their land now and in the future for themselves and for their children.

Thanks Dale for the latest video! WOW, great workout splitting green wood outside of winter! When I was burning and harvesting firewood I would cut the tree down and into measured rounds from spring til the following winter when the freeze sets in I would then split into cord wood, the frozen wood was more brittle and seemed to split a little easier. Then I would stack it for drying and burn it the following winter. We are on the 'grid' so with age and the scarcity of hard wood in in my area (also the expense ) I have opted to burn wood pellets. I burned wood for heating my homes for over forty years even though I always had a central heating. Heating with wood is a great workout and very therapeutic for the sole in it's comfort and accomplishment. I really enjoy your channel because there is a very different culture that is ours here in Northern New England and you exemplify a fading culture of independence and 'grit'!

The simplest explanation is that a forest is just a big garden but the crop takes years to develop before harvest. I've just had our property logged and already the undergrowth is filling in. We cut pine and spruce, looks like they'll be replaced with beech and maple ( I'm planting cedar in spots). I'm hoping to turn most of the property to hardwoods and put in a tiny sugarbush. My heirs will thank me.
@daleswier8429
@daleswier8429 5 жыл бұрын
And the birch you harvested will likely sprout up from its stump also, providing more birch trees for the future. Would I be correct in assuming that, by the looks of your forest, you may soon be harvesting trees to thin them for the health of the forest? Great fun taking care of ones own forest, and watching it regenerate for the future. Done correctly, as you are, it promotes more wildlife too.

You are exactly right about clear-cuts. Here in North Central Alabama, we are lucky to have beautiful hardwood forests. But sadly not just private landowners, but Alabama Power which is the states power company are clear-cutting everything around. It’s sad how nowadays it’s like nobody at all cares about God’s creation or the wildlife that lives in it. In the rural neighborhood that I live in, literally everywhere around us but the Talledega National Forest is completely full with genetically modified Pine trees that aren’t even native to the area. There is two private landowners here with about 500 acres put together of the most beautiful land around. There is wildlife just in that section of true forest that isn’t anywhere else around here. So much of it, that the compression of livable woods has pushed them onto the roadways. Therefore, them being hit by cars. Only about 120 years ago, the Cherokee, Creek, and many other tribes of natives would come from hundreds of miles to hunt deer, bear, elk, moose, beaver, turkey, mountain goats, and many more things. Now, nearly half of everything that used to be here is gone. Same with many types of fish and trees. I am only fourteen, but I hope that within my lifetime I will make a change in all of that. You’ve got a beautiful place up there and I admire the work you put into it.

Hey great comments man, I appreciate them. Get yourself a tract of land and work it, and in your lifetime it can be a beautiful thing. Something you can leave to your kids. I've been on those tree plantations - mile after mile of the same tree - and completely void of life.
