Hey guys try using the Megabass Spark Shad. I guess you can say it's more of a freestyle bait. They come in different lengths and I use the 5inch with the 1/2 oz Megabass body balance jig head. They work great up here in the New England States especially Lake Champlain! Give it a try and good luck!

Definitely a huge fan of magdrafts, caught tons fish on them of course the treble hook is better but I mostly fish freestyle because I can get it in better places & fish on bottom too. I take my 8" magdrafts & cut the harness out of them & turn them to 8" free styles. Use 10/0 hook. Fish it mostly on or close to bottom . I have had good hookups with freestyle 6&8"

Hi Randy, I utilize a very easy solution to your concern regarding the thickness of the back portion that significantly improves my bite/hook/land ratio with the Magdraft Freestyle. You can use a razorblade to add depth to the belly cavity which increases the hook gap above the back to improve hook penetration, but it's not necessary to use a razorblade. Merely put your thumbs inside the Magdraft belly and gently rip the top of the cavity across its full length to increase the depth, leaving about 1/4" of plastic thickness on the back. With this modification, when a fish eats the Magdraft, they're getting hooked and coming in the boat. Please give it a try as I know you'll be sold.

Yep that's a good tip. I've never tried cutting the pocket on a 6" like that. I haven't had problems with hook ups but that would only improve that. I do cut belly on 8 " baits though because I remove harness & trunk them into weedless baits so I can fish them in thicker cover

@@tagwatson360 make it yourself I do, I turn most of my 8" to free style. Easy cto cut harness out & rig the weighted weedless hook only takes few minutes

Now that the Ozark rig hook from Core Tackle is out, I wonder if that design would work well with the freestyle. I don't think a large enough hook size is available yet, but I imagine it is only a matter of time seeing as how they now offer many more options for the hover rig

I know seem like everyone throws these 6" baits on 20-25lb line. I through my 6" magdrafts on 14-16lb line & 8" ones on 20lb, I do retie very often... I've had really good luck with that sized line on those & other swimbaits. I think you get more head wobble & action on lighter line. My last big largmouth on 6" magdraft freestyle was 8.98 & I was using 14lb floro.

Zaldain just developed a "magdraft" with bassmafia. Looks like it can be rigged a few ways and one of them is line through. Wonder if that will increase hook up ratio?

I paint the hook weight red with nail polish (I stold some from my wife) and I think it helps ...

I just cut more of a slit in the belly so the hook can slide up in into the bait when you get bit. Also when it comes to the hook set I give them a few seconds to swallow it, just like when you frog fishing

I only use the freestyle. Usually gets bigger bites. I use the owner beast hook.

I have a rod dedicated to a 6” magdraft freestyle with owner Beast hook. Can’t tell you how many big bass (5+ lbs) it has accounted for the last 2 years

I think the regular Magdraft has a better action to it also it seems like the head hunts more side to side. I also don’t like the way the weight of the flashy swimmer hangs way below the bait. I’ve started painting the weight so it’s not a lead color

What about rigging it with a large straight shank hook? A 7/0 or 8/0? If the barb laid down in that channel you were talking about, would the plastic collapse and expose the hook??

I use a Owner Beast hook 8/0. I’ve used ones with 1/8 3/16 and 1/4 weights. Mostly the weights help it run straighter. It is pretty weedless too!!

Hey Randy Zeldane is making a Bass mafia dangerous swim bait one is called unloaded and the one that they are trying to get into production is called the loaded swim bait it uses a flipping hook that sits on the top and is secured with and internal line thru magnetic ramp. I have this Magdraft freestyle and I’ve yet to throw it considering there’s no way there’s a bass that’s going to bite it in any water near me. Maybe if I can get to a big lake. 😅

You'd be surprised, I've caught them in park district ponds on the magdraft, same with those 10" rat lures. Bass are opportunistic feeders, give it a shot

I wouldn’t personally. I’d throw OG in more open water and freestyle in more covered areas.

I have a couple that I have dun that to so I can get it deeper into the grass but you have to have a 10/0 or 12/0 so you can get past the weight and have the ability to get the hook out the top enuff to get a big bass pined good so the hook is completely through the mouth and room to move without popping out
