Fall is topwater time! When it comes to catching bass in shallow water, every bass angler knows that topwater is king. The question isn't if you should throw topwater, its which topwater you should throw next. Today we're breaking down the different styles of topwater, what they're for, and how to use them this Fall.
From poppers to walking baits, buzz baits to wake baits, Tim is explaining what each style of bait is for. In addition to the baits themselves he also gives key color recommendations so you can fish with confidence.
Below you'll find links to our favorite baits, favorite colors, as well as the gear we use to fish them. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

I have fished in the South most of my life. From Florida to Kentucky and topwater is almost year round in Florida based on time of day and low pressure times. Here in Kentucky Fall is one of my favorites for shallow cranks and topwater. It’s a one two punch for me. I can have three baits rigged and be happy this time of year. A jig/tube rod, shallow crank, topwater. My all time best topwater time is post spawn. Maybe it’s just me and what I want to fish? Regardless it’s money for me. I love smaller finesse topwater more than anything. A pop r type of bait worked fast and spitting water looks and sounds amazing. Spooks to me are my old school favorite and I love the one knocker. Regardless, I love a topwater bite!

Don what part of Kentucky are you from? Barren River Lake here for me. Spro wamku shad and the rock crawler works great here this time of year. I haven't fished top water much. What would you suggest using on Barren River, it's a shallow lake and considered one of the best bass lakes in the state acre for acre.

I really hope you guys spend some time with nishine Lure works topwaters next year if you haven't already. The abino 110 is crazy customizable and the erie 115tw is an insane..... topwater floating Minnow... and yes it's insane, the action and erratic first few kicks are just unbelievable, so so so many ways to fish. Hiroshi is the king of attention to detail, product testing, and adding multiple uses to his baits, nothing of his is straight forward and one dimensional. They are all beginner friendly and easy to use but all have a very high skill ceiling if you are willing to put in the time and experiment with them. Thanks for another great video guys.

I just started using the 115TW and it's incredible. Around here the whopper plopper 110 and 75 have been king of the river for a long time, but I schooled my buddy the first trip out with the 115TW... the hooks on those NLW lures are super sticky too. I landed 28 of thirty smallies hooked and they all jumped.
@MadMaxx89
@MadMaxx89 Жыл бұрын
@@jaypearce20 ya absolutely love their Hooks too. I've had awesome landing ratios as well. They really eat it good, it out produced all my other topwaters since getting it regardless of conditions. It's so subtle and doesn't telegraph itself so you know it's going to be a producer for years to come, fish won't be as quickly conditioned to it as other lures. Heck the Rapala floating Minnow still catches just as many fish as it ever has and that things been around forever, same thing with the old smithwick rogues. This is the same deal.

Hey Tim, question for ya. What do you do when there is just too much bait in the water? The lake I live by and fish primarily this time of year gets super super tough because there seems to be unlimited endless bait balls. Can I hook up walking baits with straight yellow braided line with a leader.
@jaypearce20
@jaypearce20 Жыл бұрын
One comment about why the vixen might be better for smallies... the hook pattern is is better for hooking up smallies because of the way they hit baits. Instead of gulping the whole lure, smallies are notorious for grabbing a bait right in the center of the body. The rover doesn't have hooks there, but the vixen does. Another lure you might want to try this year is the Nishine lure works Erie 115TW jerk bait. It's a high floating jerk bait that can be fished in less than a foot of water. Has an incredible action and the smallies around here were crushing it!

I vary my retrieves fast for 2 seconds then moderate 2 seconds. When I go fast I don't go so fast the bass miss. Then I vary my pause times. During the winter I'd vary my retrieves moderate 2 seconds then slow. Still will vary my pause but pauses I'll start out with 5 seconds then increase pause periods if it's not long enough pause period. Then continue varying pause an retrieve moderate 2 seconds super slow 2 seconds an switch up then super slow then moderate. Also when it's really hot its good to start retrieve moderate then slow in 2 seconds increments.

You can never win comes to mind😆 When I speed up they start to bite but also miss the bait. When I slow down the stop biting. It's all about finding that happy medium I guess

I never throw a double buzzbait they aren't for every situation. That's for a noisy day. Single buzz with and without a knocker. Various sizes but mostly three colors. Black, white(shad) and a bluegill. From a small 1/4oz to. 1/2oz. I catch multiple species of bass surprised you said it's only for largemouth considering people have been catching multiple bass species on buzzbaits for probably over 60 years lol. I catch spots, largies, hybrids, striper, white and yellow bass on them.

Matt & Tim always stellar tutorials/n gear reviews :)))) Since you both are BFS guys ....... give the massive 2 5/8" Yo-Zuri 3DR-X Popper a go. Believe i saw it featured on a Tackle Warehouse video perhaps 3 months ago. First time using it over in Bluff City ---- thought it was a smallmouth busting some bait on the surface. Soon as i set the hook i knew it was a good sized Striper. I was using my new Sore Lip Em (via Trout Magnet) $40 2-Piece spinning rod with ............... Leland Lure's SOS 6# copolymer. Fortunately my Popper had one hook in mouth the other the bridge of the nose. INSANE fight ......... dozen and a half runs peeling line ???. I don't carry a scale but had to be 16-18 pounds. Ultra surprised i did not have to spend ten minutes reviving the Striper !!! The 3DR-X does not have ultra cupped lip ---- which i like. Spits quite a bit of water for such a small profile. Been terrific for Hybrids the last month +. Comes in some great color options and is only $8
