When a surprise 1964 Cooper S Mini shows up to the shop and lights up our hearts, we need to feature it. Here's a little tour of some of the items that came standard to all mk1 Minis, plus a few special add-ons. Note the rare factory oil cooler.

Its not only the design of the classic minis that I love, but its the history of the company and how the cars came to be, I will never stop loving mini!

I love the ignition in the dash. I need to work out how to do that on my '83.

Kind of the opposite here in North Yorkshire UK. More and more barn finds are being restored now they fetch up to £50k for certain years and many find their way to Matthewsons auctions around the corner from me in Pickering. Even appaulingly rusted old wrecks are being restored, especially now you can buy new heritage bodyshells.

Your both wrong you can get reproductions that are safer lighter and better corrosion resistance coating and no hidden behind panels or cracks and rust I’ve dissected lots of cars to pro-form surgery with my welder and dent hammer lol no matter what sand blasting you use or acid dip the only way to get it really perfect and not to come back is cutting all the rust out that means all of it even the little dust hell from sandblasting one side of the car to the other it can flash rust without a flash rust coating applied before tac down and first coat of spray these modern reproductions are in every way better in every shape or form as long as you buy quality parts but money doesn’t dictate quality some really expensive brands suck while other not bottom of the barrel but cheaper ones may be far better do your research but you can build one of these new with a electric conversion and decent suspension brakes brand new wiring bushings fresh seals all the little things that make a mini nice and not rust bucket fuck the original ones from fuel delivery to head gaskets to timing chains rattling valves knocking bottom ends exhausts to fall off gas engines suck bro it’s not history that should be remembered it’s history that should be forgotten and erased im going to cut up every sexy body classic I get my hands on and ev swap it with quality serviceable parts retarded gas owners stuck in 1960 be like everything else lasts forever on ev drivetrain but the batteries cost 15 grand Well news flash I got for free natter of fact it paided me my whole setup came out of a model s salvage title I only used one motor sold the other one sold some body parts interior and wheels and front clip I ended up getting paided 1200 to harvest what I needed minus a controller and pirate software to trick the motor into thinking it was running in the regular car under a different controller retards be like that sounds to hard for me to learn naw bro it’s ten million times easier and simpler to troubleshoot and service way less moving parts and things to break as far as pricey batteries go and battery failure goes I got one battery on my current mini but I had a Land Rover defender with two that if the battery completely failed you could switch it over and avoid a flatbed 9/10 times a battery problem is a usually a burnt individual cell that’s not more then 100 to flux a new one in and in 7 years of electric driving that only happened once cheap fix compared to a head gasket or if a oil journal clogs spark plug wire comes undone coil fails when gas blows up it blows up major and costs thousands when electric fails throw some chump change at it that only happened to me once and it could have been my error installing or making the battery packs but just like I carry two glocks I’m going to ride with two batteries doubled up

I built my mini classic for 45k and it’s better then new but a less bling bling one could be accomplished for 35 to 40k everything brand new down to bolts and bushings glass everything now harvesting a vin to register it or register it as kit car good luck the only thing on my mini that’s not new is a vin plate that is was titled and registrated to lol but I had no choice all my sheetmetal rotted so I had to replace it haha

I did the Historic Monte Carlo rally with a friend in his 1965 Cooper S. Several things come to mind: - about the only car other than a Lotus Elan or MGB to be able to overtake on narrow Alpine roads - amazing traction with a LSD and studs in sheet ice - on steep hairpins - very safe Certainly one of the most entertaining cars I have driven.

Miss my old Mini so badly - love my 2004 R53, but absolutely nothing compares to a classic. (Owned a 1968 Copper 998 - last of the Mk2s, but sadly never had it on the road. Our daily was a 1981 Mk 3.5 Mini City 998 - 'restored' it 2 or 3 times, painted it from white to dark blue, and back to white again - changed the interior from hounds tooth, to cow print, to tartan - loved it, broke it, and drove the wheels off it - never did upgrade the front brakes from drums to disks either! 🤣)

Love the video. I'm the very lucky owner of an original '65 Cooper S (Canadian export) and absolutely love it. I too have a Wheaten Terrier who loves to ride in the passenger seat with the sliding window open. Congratulations to the owner! Now drive it like you stole it!

I'd mention the front valance panel. It gives the original mini a more bean look from the front as opposed to the later cut back ones showing the tyre. I wonder why they went that way.

One to savour and digest as you don’t know if you’ll see another. ‘64 was a pretty good year for the Cooper S. Mini’s rock, but the Mk I gets the spidey sense’s going that’s for sure

That is probably worth a scary amount of money now! Super cool that you got to poke around it and thanks for showing us what you found. Although, if you can at this stage, please mix the background music to be a little quieter, particularly in the second half. It was drowning you out a bit.

Thanks for this video, what a beautiful Austin Mini MkI Cooper S! It must be an early model because it didn't have the cutouts on the lower edges in the front mask for the brake vent. 😍🤩 I love my 1964 RHD Morris Mini Cooper S MKI from South Africa, it is so rough and loud. 😁 Unfortunately my Mini no longer has the original 1071cc engine fitted but a MkI 1275cc Cooper S engine. The engine must have been swapped for the larger Cooper S engine at some point in South Africa, a shame, but it was still reasonably affordable that way. 😅 With matching numbers it would have cost me almost twice as much. 😬 There are so many small but fine details built in when you compare it to my 1991 MkV. Many details have deteriorated over the decades in my opinion, it makes a huge difference if you drive an old MkI or one of the latest series. Nevertheless, they are all a lot of fun to drive and that is the most important thing. 🥰🥰🥰

That became standard for the Cooper S in ‘65 or most likely ‘66. Prior to that, twin tanks was an option

Could the wheels of this car be non-cooper S? The S had longer axels/wider drums on the rear, så the wheels had a larger offset (they were set further in). These look to be quite far "out there". Also the front grill looks different from the S'es I knew.

@Phnyxen

@@bluefloyd6058 Yes - quite nice. I can't be sure about the wheels, but the bigger S-disk were standard then but broader wheels were an option at the time. I am not even sure that a tachometer was standard, but wouldn't it be? As for the oil cooler it was an option in 1965 but later became standard.
