Join Alice and Tommy T as they provide you a 2021 full walkthrough tour of Fallingwater near Ohiopyle State Park. Fallingwater, a National Historic Landmark and a site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is open to the public for guided tours and grounds passes. This is the ultimate Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece! 2021 Fallingwater Full Tour in 4K is a great video of each and every room of the award winning home. Fallingwater is a house designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936 and built in 1939 in the Laurel Highlands of southwest Pennsylvania, about 70 miles (110 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. The award winning house was built over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Mill Run section of Stewart Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, located in the the Allegheny Mountains. The house was designed as a weekend home for Liliane and Edgar J. Kaufmann, the owner of Kaufmann's Department Store.
After its completion, Time called Fallingwater Wright's "most beautiful job" and it is listed among Smithsonian's "Life List of 28 Places to See Before You Die." The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 (although the plaque stated 1976). In 1991, members of the American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater the "best all-time work of American architecture" and in 2007, it was ranked 29th on the list of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA.

I am a big Frank Lloyd wright fan and I studied him extensively and I have all of his books. I have an associate in applied science degree in architectural engineering. I've toured many of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings in River Forest and Oak Park in Illinois. But Fallingwater is one of my favorite places that I've visited. You are at peace and one with nature there. Wright was ahead of his time and was a genius.

He designed every inch with a purpose. You can see in the kitchen an even the bookcase/stairs. Every line and crack has a purpose and matches with something. He also used the sun to light the home to use less electricity.

I lived in Europe most of my life, seen so many architectural beauties. But Fallingwater just did something to me. So beautiful, so suited to the surroundings, such advanced design yet looking as if it grew out of the living rock. I love it best of all the houses I've seen, though the low ceilings were certainly the result of the proportions FLW wanted, not designed for tall people! The bedrooms and bathrooms seems small by today's standards, as everyone mentions, but not for the time it was built. The low walls bordering the outdoor areas look like they wouldn't be places you'd want children near. But all of that comes together in the sculpture of the whole house. Just gorgeous!

I have a love/hate relationship with Fallingwater. Part of me is in awe of the intricacy of design features, the incorporating of nature, the serenity, the windows. But realistically, I see chipping, signs of water leaks on the walls, cold walls and floors because of the stone. I can't imagine living through the winter here. Like I said...love/hate.

I had to study this house and do a paper on it for my degree. This house was one of his best. What I got confused on was “if there was a waterfall running through the house under a glass floor”? Or was the glass replaced after due to the site becoming “historical” and a liability for people jumping on it.

Wright's admiration for Japanese architecture was important in his inspiration for this house, and for most of his work. Just like in Japanese architecture, Wright wanted to create harmony between man and nature, and his integration of the house with the waterfall succeeded in doing so.Nov 8, 2021

I was a docent in Hollywood at Aline Barnsdall's Hollyhock house and, as instructed, told a group that Mr Wright was likely inspired by Japanese and Mesoamerican designs and got a sharp rebuke for a know-it-all physician & his wife who'd built a Frank Lloyd Wright house in the '40s. Mr Wright had told them that his designs had come completely fresh from his own imagination and he imitated no one. I could feel Mr Wright snickering in the background since he admitted that he'd used those kind of promotional statements as a marketing tool, and Olgivanna said just about the same thing. 😉

Agree. KZfaq really holds back new channels. With 170 videos and the hourly bar chart is flat during the day is almost statistically impossible. You would think with an Italian, and American, 21 years age difference, and two Yorkies, and serious 4K editing, KZfaq would promote the channel. But it looks like everyone is on the same trajectory based on corporate America. As soon as the views go up it caps and goes flat! Help us spread the word on How To Have Fun Outdoors and see if we can break the KZfaq chains and get this channel to rock!! I am not going to be a young Italian forever!! I really enjoyed your video! I am however watching it after I went there. because of mobility limitations I was not able to go any farther than the first floor. in viewing your video showing the steps/stairways, had I seen your video before I went I may have been able to make the rest of the trip. because I am new to being mobility limited I did not know the right questions to ask, like how to get up the steps where there's no handrails, what is the most steps in a row and what are the height of those steps. I'm providing some feedback to the fallingwater conservancy in order to possibly help other people in a similar situation to make an educated decision about doing the 100 steps. maybe keep in mind in any future videos that you make, to possibly point out any accessibility alternatives that you may see. some of us are moderately limited and with education about alternatives or full information about the challenges. but it is a great video! I do appreciate seeing the upstairs that I was not able to get to. the only option I was given was to sit on the first floor terrace and look at a few photos. they did not have any kind of video of the other areas that I could look at while I was sitting there .

If you go on a tour, ask the guide how many tens of thousands of dollars they spend each year to attempt to eradicate all the pernicious mold/mildew. Make them really uncomfortable by insisting on an answer. Also, ask the guide why the Kaufmann son couldn't unload the place fast enough when his parents died. This building like so many other FLW creations (except for the home he built for himself and his family in Oak Park which is beautiful, very comfortable and a lovely house to raise a family) which are paeons to his monumental ego can be summed up succinctly: a great place to visit; a bitch to live in.

Throughout your text and video you repeatedly missstate the date of the design it was actually designed in 1936 and completed in 1939. I first visited when it was less than 20 years old. It was rarely used by the family at that time and you called Kaufman's secretary to get an appointment. Nice video too bad you didn't do the trouble to say where you were instead of playing that awful music. Overall wonderful though.

We actually said designed by Wright in 36 and we added built 39 for you after your message. But if you want to be technical, From 1938 through 1941, more than $22,000 was spent on additional details and for changes in the hardware and lighting. Do the math, $22k in for that time period was a huge amount of money. So you could argue it was not completed till 41. So your 39 is s not exactly correct either. 36 was also the final prints. So we went with that date. But that could be debated also as he had designed the concept before that date. In any case, we try. This is a fun channel. We both have master degrees and we try our best. This video took 3 weeks to edit and it is free to everyone to try to learn about this amazing work. Just trying to help others value the history and architecture vs forget all these amazing historical sites around the world. With this video, hopefully a few people will visit and donate to keep it nice. As far as the video music, this is an older video, we have learned a lot from back then. So I agree. We have improved in that area. Both in selection and volume. Check out our newer videos. Like our new Lion Safari.

Mr Wright opened up the house, transforming it from a structure of many small rooms closed off from each other by doors into an open plan and we benefit from that idea today.

The window opening in the desk area was a design mistake corrected by the furniture builders. It was not intentional. Fallingwater is filled with design and structural mistakes.

It was actually presented to us as an argument between the owners and Wright on the size of the desk. In the end they made the desk bigger and created the swing hole for the window.

Maybe you do have good evidence of the desk notch being a mistake. However, given that Wright was 'quirky' (to say the least), I could easily believe he designed it that way. Especially when you look at how the shelves and windows nestle into the stone. I went through the house decades ago and was thrilled to finally experience in person after having previously only read about it or watched documentaries on it. One (apocryphal ? ) story: Wright was on the stand as a witness in court. He was asked to state his name and occupation for the record. He said "Frank Lloyd Wright. World's greatest architect." Later, when a friend asked if that answer wasn't a bit much, he replied, " I had to say it; I was under oath."

Not a mistake. Edgar Sr was unhappy with the size of the original design and insisted it be made larger. To accommodate Edgar Sr, Wright redesigned the desk with the opening to accommodate the corner window which swings open. If you look diagonally from that corner to the opposite corner, you will see that Wright designed a bedside table in the shape of the cutout.

I've never understood the worship of Frank Lloyd Wright. He had interesting designs but was a horrible architect. All of his houses had major design problems. Roofs weren't properly supported, Everything leaks, Foundations not properly designed that led to severe structural issues and on and on. Anyone can draw an interesting concept on paper. It's turning that into a design that actually works that makes a great architect. He failed miserably at that.
