Excellent vid. One cautionary comment: I bought one of these several years ago from an authorized dealer for over $100. Sometime after that I was screwing around on alibaba (Chinese website) and saw an identical knockoff. $10. I bought it just to see how close it was. Box and sheath were identical. Knife was exactly the same in size and markings. Only difference was the vg-10 lamination line on the blade was missing and the metal ring inside the hole in the handle was loose. Bottom line: buy one from an authorized dealer and beware of a steep discount in price.

First time I see somebody else explaining and demonstrating the tip up tip down featherstick technique. Kudos. The zytel sheath is lose for a reason so the knife won't freeze solid in there. I think it's a great all seasons, all climates companion knife where you can just throw it in your bag and forget about it until you need it. Or as back up knife.

Thank you for the great review of the Falkniven F1. After your expert review based on experience in the field with the knife, I went out and purchased one for myself. I have used it on day hikes, to assist with yard work, in the kitchen for food prep, to cut and trim hiking poles and on trail work jobs. It is the best all-round knife I have ever owned. I am completely happy with it. Your review helped me learn about his great knife. Also, I appreciate the feather stick pointers. I plan to watch some of your other videos. Keep up the good work.

Just got an F1 COS today with the zytol sheath. I have been using carbon scandi's for 25 years and always enjoyed the maintenance side of things as well as the use and abuse. I do a lot of canoe/wild camping in tidal rivers so looking forward to seeing how far I can push this bad boy and how the convex grind performs with the COS steel. Hopefully off to the woods for a couple of nights once Christmas is out of the way for a bit of peace , quiet and a recharge for the soul. The knife will be the cherry on top.🔥🤙

I bought the Thor a few years ago and now want a smaller companion knife to mount with the Thor. The F1 seems to be the Perfect match. Together they could handle anything and everything you’ll ever run into. I’ve been looking at lots of different knives. I’m pretty sure the F1 will fool the gap. Thank you for the information.

BRUH....😁 That is one HEAVY setup to be all strapped together! If I were going to do that I'd go for something like the WM1 as a companion blade. My favorite setup for winter is a regular A1, small, lightweight pocket knife, and my axe and saw in the pack. One day I'd love to have either a Thor or Modern Bowie just because though haha. 👍

First off Nick, you need to make more videos. The notifications come too few. LOL. Great review of the F1. I ended up getting a pretty plain Kydex sheath for mine Plain meaning just one with a ferro rod holder. The mouse pad/ sandpaper trick does work very well. Also found some sandpaper by 3m that has kind of a rubber/foam backing to it. I believe they use it for some extra cushion when sanding drywall. Thanks again for the video and look forward to the next one. Btw, my two favorite knives are the F1 and the LT Wright GNS. ATB Mike

hi there. i'm wondering if you've noticed any problems with the handle. i'm a little unsure about the material and whether it will hold up to hard use. i like everything else about this knife and i'm very close to pulling the trigger on it, but i just have that one little niggle about the rubber handle. i worry that it could wear down or split etc. after several years using it i wonder if you have encountered any such issues yet? thanks in advance, and btw excellent video.

Hey there! When I first got the knife I expected that the handle material would be a problem but all these years later I can honestly say it pretty much is in pristine condition and I’ve never taken any extra precautions to keep it safe. This knife is nothing but a daily workhorse for me. I truly don’t think you will ever have an issue with the handle durability

Very nice video review. I have a lot of knives, mainly scandi grinds, and the F1 is without a doubt one of my personal favourites for the very reason you have mentioned. I have bought 3 Mora Garberg (one of which is a carbon steel version) and though I love the Garberg I find myself reaching for the F1 most of the time. Because I liked the F1 so much, I went ahead and bought the F1 Pro and man was I disappointed with the F1 Pro. It just doesn’t feel as balanced as the F1, the handle on the Pro is more aggressive and chewed up my palm. If I could describe the handle on the F1 Pro it would be like holding a file in my hand. Where I camp I am in the tropical rainforest and with the intense heat and humidity wearing gloves is out of the question, at least for me. Other than the more aggressive handle, the ergo on the F1 Pro doesn’t feel as good as the F1. The Pro got left in the wardrobe out of sight, out of mind and hasn’t seen use from when I got it. Fallkniven called the F1 a survival knife, but the grind is so good I personally felt it makes a great bushcraft and food prep knife too. I have owned the F1 for almost as long as you and now I am drooling over the newer one with the CoS steel. Not sure if I should get that. Would you?
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697 5 жыл бұрын
That is awesome! I was lucky enough to be one of the product testers before they released the Pro series Knives! That was my biggest issue with it as well. Also the steel bolsters don’t make sense if you are doing anything in a winter environment as steel on the handle sucks all the heat out of your body. If it were me, I would keep using the F1 that I have but I’m a sentimental guy lol
@andyhooutdoors
@andyhooutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Blackwater Bushcraft Woodland Allure That is one of the reason why I haven’t purchased the F1 CoS. In a way I love my current F1 so much and don’t see a need to, and as long as the F1 hasn’t die on me it is hard to justify getting the CoS version. But damn, my mind could not stop thinking about CoS! 😂

Hi great review, I have the f1 but never used it cus of difficulty of sharpening it also that people say it chips easy due to the steel type but watching this video you don’t have that problem also do you have a video the way u sharpen it with a mouse pad or could you explain thx?
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697 5 жыл бұрын
mick skinner yes i think when people say that they mean hypothetically it isn’t as chip resistant as other knives but it’s strong enough to do any job I’ve given it. I’ve never had the edge chip in all of these years. I also think that once one person has a bad experience other people tend to repeat what they have heard rather than experienced for themselves. If you search “sharpening a convex edge with mousepad” lots of great tutorials will come up, it is super easy to sharpen this way

The sheath was easy, im in Europe so new one direct from Fällkniven was like 16 euro to my door (ordered the same sheath you have) so, just got to put a convex back on it. Any tips for that please mate? My first convex knife. Though ive sharpened axes that are convex so guess is similar? Nice, concise video. Thank you for sharing. Subscribing was easy decision ;-)

Thank you so much I really appreciate that!! The easiest way to guarantee a consistent convex edge is to use automotive sandpaper and a computer mouse pad. Basically you put the paper on the mousepad and slide the knife away from the edge not toward the edge and the mousepad creates the perfect convex angle as you push down on the sandpaper. I start at around 400 grit then work my way up to 2500 grit. Which will give you a polished mirror edge. I usually go from 400 650 1000 1500 2000 2500 Thank you so much for the kind words and once you get it back to a beautiful convex edge you will certainly love this knife!!! Cheers

If you don’t mind me asking, what exactly was your other scandi “main knife” at the time you filmed this that you mentioned in the video? Thanks!

Great review Nick. Do you have a preference between the F1 and your Adirondack? Just curious. Love what you do, how you respect our Mother and just a general well rounded attitude. Miigwetch for sharing the best parts of your life with us.

Sonny Maguiresmith Miigwetch!! I tend to use the Adirondack more in the summer, and the F1 in the winter. But I usually switch it up all year too ha ha they are both sooo great in their own ways, they are really they only two knives I’ve been back and fourth with over the years. They both excel at almost all tasks. The Adirondack is more sentimental to me so I would have to pick it solely for that reason. Miigwhetch for the thoughtful comments. I have such a deep connection with Mother Earth and I hope to inspire that in others over all else! Cheers

Can you tell me about how you made that ferro rod set up?
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697 4 жыл бұрын
I just hollowed out a chapstick tube and cut off the one end. Duct tape that to the sheath, then wrap with paracord.

So you have a 1/2 ferro rod in the tube? Now I gotta measure a chapstick tube 🤔 haha

Excellent review. What did you use to secure the fire steel to the sheath? Is it a bicycle inner tube?
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697
@blackwaterbushcraftwoodlan6697 4 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, although I have changed it since then, I took apart an old chapstick tube, duct taped the tube to the side. It fit the firesteel perfectly, with an elastic rope to keep the ferro rod in the tube, then rewrapped the whole thing with paracord again. Now I can take the ferro rod out with ease

It is a lemming statement to say you need a Ferro rod on to ur knife. You Ferro rod should not be constantly exposed to the elements as it is hydroscopic.

Adventures with Frodo to each their own. I’ve had the same ferro rod on my knife for over 6 years and it still works great. It’s just my preference to have one with the knife together.

Cool im glad you like this Swedish brand, though, the knife is made in Japan sadly! xD But designed in Sweden. Then again, you know it's quality both from Sweden and Japan, so it's a good combination.
