High up in the Ecuadorian Andes, almost directly on the equator in a remarkably mild climate at 2350 meters (7710 feet) above sea level, sits a perfect piece of land and the site of my next project. It's a little small for a productive farm, but with a little planning and smart use of the space I hope to transform this field of weeds into a beautiful food forest, greenhouse, solar heated tilapia pond, my family's home, and a place where visitors can rent cabins and experience life on our farm.

Wow, I love the Gualea area. I spent a lot of time looking for land around there and Pacto but at the time the options were a bit out of my budget. Such a perfect climate over there. As the crow flies I’m really close but by road it’s about 2 and a half hours.

I think of the US as a great place to work and go shopping, but not a wonderful place to live or raise a family. The cost of living, cultural wars, commute, and work schedule all wear me down. It feels empty, like you’re working just to stay afloat, and that it’s impossible to truly build something for the future and improve life for your children. In Ecuador it feels like it’s possible to build something that will help the family for generations. Of course it’s not possible on Ecuadorian wages though, so the combination of working outside of Ecuador but investing the money in Ecuador seems like it will work.

You mean the thin air? Yeah, it takes a few days to adjust at that elevation, especially for hiking up and down the hills. It’s not a difficult adjustment like Quito though, at least for me. I found 2400m to be kind of the magic number. Above that an I feel like the elevation is constantly dragging me down, even after I’ve adjusted. Below that and I feel fine once my blood thickens up a bit.

I agree, exactly. In this particular microclimate I would have preferred 2200m, but there wasn’t anything available that met my other requirements. That's one beautiful spot for sure! I'll definitely have to come visit once you have the guesthouses built brother. Regarding the pond, not sure what freshwater fish are common in Ecuador but i'm sure there's something similar to what Trout is up here that would do better than Tilapia, it's a good move either way as the fish will make that retention/ reserve water extremely fertile for the soil. Look forward to more of this! Stay safe in the meantime friend.

We do have trout and I would prefer a trout pond, but I think I’d need more water exchange than I can pull off. If I had a little stream I would do trout for sure. I’m hoping that by circulating water through a black plastic water line in the sun I can heat it enough to keep the water warm enough for the tilapia and in doing so create a slightly warmer area near the pond where I can grow bananas. It’s kind of an experiment.

I’m going to try to circulate the nitrogen rich water through my plants in a greenhouse and then back to the pond while creating a warm zone around the pond to grow bananas. It’s going to be a lot of work and investment to set up the solar water heating system, so if the experiment fails I’ll be pretty bummed.

My grandfather was a farmer in, Hawaii. Similar soil types and conditions. My grandfather was a farmer for the necessities of feeding the family. We had just under an acre of land and he had drilled his own well. He’d purchased land from the Sugar Cane company back when he worked for them back in the depression era, being paid a dollar a day. He purchased that property, as was told by other relatives, approximately $2,500, in about 1933. He raised chickens vegetables and fruit trees as well as bananas and other native Hawaiian food crops even coconut trees that as a young teenager, I had to trim, the coconut bunches when they became ripe. Growing up, I never considered it hard work just something I had to do if I wanted to go hang out at the beach to go spear fish or play with my friends. I would look at your farm and ask myself. What is the goal of your farm to be? A money produce farm, or a hobby farm to enjoy family time and have your own food resources. Being that your starting from scratch. My thinking as far as irrigation, I would look into, “drip irrigation method.” It minimizes the water usage yet teaches the plants to go deeper into the soil for better anchorage of roots, since your property is sloped. I would not recommend aqua culture for the expense and the quality of fish is not worth it. For one thing your property is not level the water usage for the return in fish meat is not of quality. We in, Hawaii we consider the, Tilapia as a trash fish, of very bad quality. The farm raised Tilapia, tends to be mushy and does not taste good to us at all. But it’s your money spend it as you will. Maybe build more terraces on your property to retain soil better. Use natural rocks or masonry blocked terrace walls for better soil retention. Also look into building some chicken coops for natural pest control of the insects that will invade once the food crops start producing. Mangoes, Watermelons, Cantaloupes. In Hawaii one of the native foods that grow well in sloped terraces is the, Taro Plant, that is the plant that, Poi is made from. Guava trees are pretty good in that climate. Any way enjoyed your video, please continue to make great videos for all of us to watch. Maybe get a donkey to help with the carrying of the load in the fields. Aloha. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸

The goal is to produce food for the family. Yeah, I’m not a big tilapia fan either. Not sure what else I could raise in the pond. Ducks maybe, but I don’t really like ducks. The pond is more about creating a water retention system and the tilapia are a way to recycle food scraps into great fertilized water quickly. Chickens are definitely part of the plan as is a drip watering system.
@proyectonuevo7487

Excellent explanation, it is seen that you know a lot about agriculture, I only correct you something, usually tilapia is not raised in the mountains, the ideal fish and that has a good profit margin is trout, a fish much larger than tilapia and with more meat and better flavor ... Trout is the fish that is at a high level in the gastronomy of high altitude cities, such as cuenca, Quito, Riobamba etc that seeks information on trout breeding, trout is similar to salmon

@@proyectonuevo7487 yes, agree with you on the trout, it is a better cold water fish to farm. Although I’m not a big fan of farmed fish because I’ve seen the, GMO, monsters that the American Pharmaceutical company’s have been pushing out to sell to the public. Some of the Salmon Products have been called, “The Frankenstein Fish,” a play on the Movie called, Frankenstein, the monster created from various human body parts. Yes, the geneticist have been playing with in getting the farmed Salmon to grow to, 25lbs in 90-days. And they’ve have had there successes, in about the six month time period instead of the 90-day as desired. This cuts down the expense of farm costs because it gives you a sooner time to harvest and bring to market. The drugs used for the fish to grow to marketable size is what I don’t like, because when you eat the fish you eat the same drugs that’s in the fish. Anyway best wishes to you and your adventures in life.

And after reading through some of your comments about why you making the pound and using tilapia etc for to help gas off, i agree the fish aren't that beneficial. Try looking at setting up a bamboo trench to shuttle water through to help purify it of municipality water contaminants. It would do a better job and you would also get the added benefit of reaping wood for future uses, fires, to make into charcoal etc and it replenishes quickly while having a beauty aesthetics to it. I've seen it used many times for grey water systems so I don't know why it wouldn't work for your municipality water. Example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frR6iNyFx6mymn0.html

Thanks, I’ll look into the bamboo. I’m a little closer to Quito than Otavalo.

It is a bit sad not to have solar system panels in Ecuador I think they do not even know it.

Wrong friend, already many people in the countryside are using solar panels, obviously their cost is still very high but little by little that is falling in price, I live in the Galapagos Islands and here all the energy we take from the sun, we have giant windmills and many solar panels ... Solar technology is gradually coming to Ecuador a country that has a lot of sun hehe

I’ve been seeing a lot of ads for solar panels and installation in Ecuador on FB marketplace. The prices are high when compared to traditional electric and because in most of Ecuador the power is from hydroelectric there isn’t a compelling reason to switch to solar yet. I do plan on building a very low tech solar water heating system so that I can heat my pond enough To raise tilapia (I don’t have enough fresh water exchange to raise healthy trout) and also so I can create a slightly warmer area of the farm around the heated pond so I can grow bananas.

I probably need to update this video. There’s been a drought this summer. Much of this summer water has been shut off during the day to conserve.

Ahem...If that's corn or maracuya or any kind of bean all around you, you may be stuck in a glyphosate fog 2x a week, man.

Thanks for the warning. I doubt it’s an issue with my neighbors. I haven’t seen any spraying going on yet, and suspect the corn farmers on either side of me are too poor to afford to spray. One neighbor has warned us that they do periodically spray the avocado trees that grow near our property. They told us because they know we’re trying to avoid any non-organic herbicide and pesticides and we had planted a bunch of mora too near their avocados to avoid some overspray.

Those who fumigate are the large haciendas that sell their products. Small farms usually don't... Glyphosate is a big problem, here in Galapagos we are fighting that

What's going on with the vaccine in Ecuador?
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 2 жыл бұрын
Heavy use of the Sinovac vaccine. Some Pfizer and Moderna. Similar vaccine rates as the US. They’ve just started vaccinating kids. People are generally eager to get the vaccine and the biggest obstacle is supply.

Yeah, that’s part of why we’re planting cacti along the fence line. That’s the side the horse approaches from and the fence isn’t tall enough to stop him from reaching over it to eat. The row of cacti is meant to make that more difficult.
