I finally rest and watch the sun rise on a "this video is not performing as well as usual" universe. Still, never let it be said that I leave a job unfinished.
Unless it's Christmas TV.

I didn't see much of it so I should mention it. Ulysses doesn't just speak against the NCR he speaks against whatever faction the game thinks you are siding with. So he has alternate dialogue talking about the problems with the legion and Mr house too and I think some dialogue questioning your ability to lead.

I think the ideology of Hopeville is intentionally left ambiguous so the player can insert whatever they think would be a good faction and weigh it up against their choices so far in the game. Ulysees is meant to be a foil for the player but it's kind of hard to write an antithesis to an RPG Protagonist; He was supposed to be in the base game but was moved to DLC because he needed an entire disc for all of his alternate voice lines.
@whenisdinner2137
@whenisdinner2137 Жыл бұрын
Exactly it's left ambiguous because there is no current economic or political system that would lead to such a Utopia. The idea is to get you thinking about what that can be. And they don't even Explore the full consequences of what Hopeville could have been. They simply said that it was a new system that hadn't been used before and Ulysses came to the conclusion that any system that hasn't been proven to fail is automatically better then those proven to fail by history.

Any channel that not only has Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul retrospectives, but also FNV retrospectives, is automatically based in my book. Also, one thing I don't understand is how do the Marked Men know what Lanius looks like if the Divide was destroyed before the first battle of Hoover Dam? He wasn't a prominent figure at the time and was a direct replacement for Graham only after they lost the first battle, the Legion soldiers that became the Marked Men wouldn't know anything about him. I guess they could be scouts that entered after, but based on what happened to the NCR scouts that also entered the Divide after its destruction, I doubt they ended up as Marked Men

From the UK here. Recently found your channel and watched some of your retrospectives. Great work. They are very full of content because of you snappy pacing, because of how good your stuff is then that's not any form of criticism. I watched The Americans because I was curious, I never followed it to the end, I liked it but didn't love it enough to stay with it. Because I your retrospective so much I watched Community, Hannibal, and Fargo which I haven't seen at all. Great analysis, funny but also friendly. A very well-balanced style. I'm a big fan of Fallout too.

The tunnelers become a joke when you realize they can't run and swipe at you at the same time. Just find a nice spot to run in circles and pull out your favorite shotgun and lay waste on the vermin. I'll be honest I can't stand Ulysses' voice so I just kind of ignore him and have fun collecting goodies and completing checklists at my leisure, same as I did with the rest of the game and expansions bar one. That actually gave me an issue spelunking the Sierra Madre because of the lack of agency in how I tackle the expansion which your options further dwindle the lower your skills are going into it. Honestly that one felt like if Telltale tried making a Soulsy type game with a lick of Fallout paint on top because ultimately at the end some of the characters have to die/get "DOOR STUCK" which ultimately leaves somewhat of an empty feeling leaving the place for good. Especially when the best I could do to bring Veronica & Christine back together was give her the dress Christine wore and give her Cristine's rifle that she lost in Big Mountain. Lonesome Road was the perfect antidote to being cattle proded along with a bomb collar because I can pick away at it much like how one would kick a bad habit, not in one sitting (for most) but gradually weaned until you realized you crossed the peak and reached your destination. Or to put it simpler, Lonesome road felt like an adventure, Dead Money felt like homework. Ideally if the two were to mesh in a clever way that may have ended up making a perfect expansion where the urge to explore was married well with the confrontation the two expansions seem to do well just not at the same time. I think those design issues were more of a sign of a studio stuck on a set schedule and set funding meaning a lot of compromises had to be made in order to succeed with those constraints so the reason why the expansions are all so varied was so that they could try a bit of everything without having to do everything all in one making that seemingly improbable task of pulling all that off much more palatable. In the end I think that kind of approach ended up creating a winning formula that brought in so many prople consistently over the years giving it that revered classic status. The only thing I think this game is missing is just existing on a game engine where "it just works" and it could easily be re-released again today to much the same fanfare. Luckily Fallout 4 New Vegas is a thing and I hope those fine people end up making it as good as the Crowbar Collective did with Black Mesa.
@istrumguitars

At least Dead Money was challenging in that sense. Easy enough to make multiple save files in case you fuck up and can’t retrace. I think the story is what kills LR for me. The “battle at the divide” is played up throughout the 4 DLCs as some climatic, fateful encounter with a mystery antagonist that would’ve tied all of them together… when it didn’t, I felt let down. It would’ve been great if Ulysses’ motivations to use the nukes were connected to something more meaningful instead of making it about some vindictive anger towards you for some arbitrary shit that allegedly happened off-screen… especially since that whole story thread is delivered entirely in these vaguely worded and annoyingly cryptic massive exposition dumps that make me feel nothing. Nothing except “is this over yet?”

People would have been alot less harsh on Ulysses if Obsidian had just dialed back the theatrics a bit. His ideology and his general role in the story are perfectly solid. But for some reason they decided to bury all that under this bizarre cross between Darth Vader and a Bond villain that's also a mailman, cause he has to be like you, who uses tryhardish phraseology (muh bear, muh bull, muh flags) that nobody else in the game world uses. The constant references to something you (supposedly) did in the past that never came up before Lonesome Road also don't help. It's distracting enough that people misunderstand his entire motivation as being some sort of revenge plot.

@@whenisdinner2137 Yeah because when you really think about it he makes as much sense as your average LA crackhead, with half of the charisma somehow. Honestly Lonesome Road as a whole is written so poorly it makes the rest of the game worse. Like seriously it's impressive how much it fucks up the rest of New Vegas from the base game to the other DLCs, all brought down by a crazy asshole and his moonlogic about destroying the old world and its failures to bring about a new world because you accidentally(?) 9/11'd the NCRs Silk Road even though you were the one who apparently established it as a proper thing to begin with. The Courier being retconned into the guy who actually set the stage for how all of New Vegas played out by nuking the NCR's major supply line also just fucks with so much of what was neat about the game.
@whenisdinner2137
@whenisdinner2137 Жыл бұрын
@@MB-sq7yn how does it mess up the rest of New Vegas? You realize you have the choice to turn off the nukes right? You can even make the guy side with the NCR. Ulysses is from a tribe that didn't speak English so English isn't his first language. That's why he picks his words carefully and speaks slowly. On top of that they got conquered by Caesar's Legion and he was essentially forced to be a part of it. Not knowing anything better, he took to the ideology of Caesar because it was all he knew. Eventually in his travels as a courier spy he stumbled upon Hopeville which was a small town being built due to Courier 6 opening a trade route there. Hopeville was basically a brand new governing philosophy that doesn't exist in the real world and for whatever reason he really took to it and believed it to be the best ideology for the future of humanity. So imagine all that happens and then the same guy who initially game Hopeville life destroys it by proxy because they have no aversion to staying away from technology they don't understand. Over and over again during the course of the DLC the player automatically interacts with old terminals, ed-e and even sets off another nuke without ever thinking about what they were doing. I think his Vendetta against the player is kind of understandable. As for why he wants to Nuke Caesar's Legion in the NCR he simply thinks they're too powerful for any new ideologies to ever form. He wants to keep them out of New Vegas by destroying their supply lines so there is at least a chance of not repeating the same mistakes and copying the same form of governments that have already failed in the fallout world. He wants literally just any new ideology to be tried at least so there's a chance of betterment in the future. That said, he could still be convinced that a new version of old systems can be a viable step forward. I don't see how he ruins the rest of the game. What The Courier was said to discover was just the hopeville trade route. I don't really see how finding a trade route ruins anything when that's what couriers are kind of supposed to do...
@MB-sq7yn
@MB-sq7yn Жыл бұрын
@@whenisdinner2137 It messes up the rest of Vegas by having you be the one responsible for the Battle of Hoover Dam going the way it did. You're no longer just a guy who was a mailman caught up in a big conspiracy, now you're the guy who is the main reason the Mojave is the way it is before the game even begins, one of the most important people in the wastelands history before you even get to even play the game. No aversion to technology they don't understand? They were delivering mail, they were just doing their job. Also the idea of new societies not being able to survive with the NCR and Legion around doesn't make sense seeing as Hopeville was a major NCR supply chain while still being what Ulysses wanted. You can also tell him that his whole idea is stupid because killing ideas is far harder than just killing people, the motives and ambitions of the NCR and the Legion will endure, just like any other smaller society and culture will. That could have been something interesting, if it wasn't conveyed through 20 minute monologues about how a town you built by being a mailman also died because you were being a mailman.

@@whenisdinner2137 His ideology is largely fine. And I agree that the general themes and message of the DLC are interesting. It's always been a presentation issue. Nobody else in the legion (or anywhere really) talks like this. Dude just constantly radiates tryhard vibes.

Thanks for the breakdown! Came looking for this after watching the Fallout TV Series. SPOILERS!!! I hadn't played NV in years, but after seeing Shady Sands destroyed in the show I remembered an option to wipe them out in NV. I wanted to try and figure out WHO Maximus actually needs to find. IMO I think its Lucy's dad working with Ulysses and the Courier that did this to Maximus. WILD!!! So lonesome road is canon, but whats even more wild is I think the option to blow away the NCR and/or Ceasers Legion is the canon option. wow... (EDIT: Nevermind, it doesn't work until we find out what happens to the Legion. Lucy's dad blowing up Shady Sands doesn't solidify NV outcome until we get more info. So far it's just Lucy's dad Maximus needs to find...)

The missiles were aimed at the Long 15 supply route, NOT Shady Sands. Speak to Ulysses and he'll explain why; his plan is to cut the NCR off from the Mojave, not burn a city. It would be hypocritical of him after all to lament the loss at the Divide, then do the same thing to Shady Sands. Also, UIysses absolutely, categorically would not be working with a recently unfrozen corporate exec, it's antithetical to his entire character.

The Pitt was the only F3 DLC that felt really solid for me. Zeta and Anchorage were long corridors you did shooter stuff in, In a game with terrible shooting mechanics. Broken Steel was Bethsoft charging us $15 to fix their shitty ending and add bunch of stuff that should have been in the game to begin with. Point Lookout iwas better but still had a bunch of dumb design choices (Worst examples of Bullet Sponge enemies, more dumb Call of Duty sections etc.) The Pitt on the other hand had a really cool visual aesthetic, borderline decent writing, and very little pointless wackiness.

It seems kind of clear to me that if you like philosophy Ulysses is one of the greatest characters ever made. If you don't like philosophy or don't understand it he just comes off as vague or annoying. His argument is that you keep messing with old-world technology you don't understand and it continuously leads to devastating consequences and throughout the game you literally set off a nuke just because you can't stop flipping switches and you literally bring Ed-E to him because you can't stop bringing around old world technology everywhere you go. Philosophically he has a point. You are a moral danger to everyone around you because you simply cannot control your desire for things you do not understand. And regardless of your intentions he cannot trust what you say because you keep on doing it because it is a literal mechanic of the game. To me it's genius and the dialogue choices that you can respond with are equally genius. He doesn't believe in any of the factions that are currently running New Vegas because all of them are based on systems of governance but have been tried in the past and have had their societies collapse eventually. The NCR is democracy and capitalism. Caesar's Legion is a Roman dictator slave state. And Mr. House claims himself as essentially a king. In the world of Fallout all of these systems have failed but he saw a new system that he believes in in the Divide before you destroyed it because you delivered a package that led to setting off nukes underground that completely destroyed the Divide. His obsession with you and philosophical ramblings seem entirely Justified to me. And personally his last message for you is the single most badass speech I've seen in video games so far. Every single one of the DLC covers letting go of the past in different ways. Dead money is about letting go of the riches and opulence of the past. Honest heart is about letting go of Revenge because that's what leads to the best ending. Old World Blues is about letting go of old scientific advancements that are too dangerous for the modern world and Lonesome Road is about letting go of old political ideologies that have failed. How you just claim that everything Ulysses said about the NCR being stuck in the past being all platitudes is beyond me. He doesn't just think that about the NCR he thinks that about every faction besides what they were building in the Divide before you destroyed it and in the world of Fallout New Vegas he is quite literally correct. The idea is that you are supposed to imagine the political system of the future. Because claiming that is any of the current existing systems is ridiculous. It's not supposed to be some material concept you can grasp right now because by every standard there are no perfect systems and there probably never will be. He never claimed that the Divide was the only correct answer either. Call him self-righteous if you want but at the very least he's asking for change and avoiding repeating history when nobody else in the game seems to care about it

My interpretation when I played it was that carrying old world technology around was another way of saying that the player was walking around supporting ideologies he didn't understand or care to. It was especially impactful for me because my character by that point hadn't picked a faction and had gone to the divide just after delivering the chip to house jusy for the sake of finishing the job, LITERALLY what Ulysses condemns you for doing, so I couldn't even say his accusations were empty like most people lol.

My least favorite of the story DLCs. It creates an unnecessary backstory for the courier without any real way to connect the player to your alleged “past” actions. Ulysses’ cryptic explanations and strange logic behind his motivations don’t make for a worthwhile payoff at the end. Even chasing him feels pointless, it’s like who even is this guy and why do I care? We’re basically running through the Divide after him for no reason other than (like you said) we bought the DLC IRL. Metanarrative isn’t a replacement for good storytelling. It was also a huge disappointment to find out Ulysses was basically just a nobody who abandoned the Legion. I’m still even not sure why, and tbh it’s hard to even care. He doesn’t hold a candle to Elijah, IMO the best villain in the DLCs and who’s comparably evil to Mr. House and even Caesar.

Im one of the few new vegas die hards that consider lonesome road the true ending of NV If you play the game how obsidian intended you start the dlc around the same time you make your decision about Hoover and get the plan in action (that's why theres a recommended level for each one) It makes a lot more sense Base game to 30-40 -dead money -old world blues -honest hearts (can be swapped with owb) - lonesome road Then you return finish your cards for Hoover etc and wrap up at the dam If you do it like that which is whats intended you get a way different feel while setting up hoover and eliminating who you dont want to be in control especially if you pay attention to things in the divide the amount of lore in it is quite astonishing Ill die on the hill of this was at the bare minimum best fallout dlc in the whole series if not the Bethesda catalog 💯 (Not to mention thats where you find the NCR ranger armor and fight as many deathclaws as base game or more that alone makes it goated)

"I would have prefered if the ability to leave lonesome road wasn't included" Bruh did you miss the entire actual meta commentary of the dlc???? I suggest watching MATN's Level 1 lonesome road playthrough, he goes really in depth in the plot in a really fun way

I hate that some games that do the whole "you're mindless for wanting to turn over every stone and follow every marker and go through every path ect" like damn dude I paid for the game so yeah I gonna do everything I can fuck off with the meta commentary. I'm glad you didn't like Uly's dumb ass dialogue and motives. He'd be cool if the dlc was more about events he's participated in instead of him being butthurt the courier was a link in a chain of events leading to hopevilles destruction or if they built up hopeville at all. Instead the dlc is the first we ever hear of hopeville and his blame game is laughable. It'd be like if we never heard of Joshua or New Canaan before the Honest hearts dlc so instead of just the plot being uninteresting the main selling points of HH would be too.

@@nathantower5565 you made the choice to launch a second nuke after going through The Divide after randomly pressing buttons just because that's what players do. Even if delivering the initial package that ruined Hopeland wasn't in your power everything that happened in the DLC was. Nobody forced you to press that button. Nobody forced you to complete the DLC. It is the only DLC in the game where you can leave whenever you want. I understand that it wasn't your initial choice to deliver the package that ruined the Divide, but at the end of the day your character started the game as a courier and you deliver packages. Regardless of your intentions in the game you keep messing with things you do not understand including Ed-E that you just bring to Ulysses so he can finish his plan. Everything makes sense if you find all of the context regarding Ulysses. You can argue that it wasn't displayed in the best way but you can't argue that it doesn't make sense just because you don't understand it. It essentially boils down to him getting disillusioned with Caesar's Legion and as a result all old-world ideologies because they all died before or during the Great War as well. Whatever was happening in Hopeville that was built by The Courier because he traveled that route delivering important things was apparently run by a different form of governance that hadn't been used before. It doesn't explain what that form of government is because it doesn't exist in the real world and you can't just make one up on the spot that actually makes sense so what's up for the player to imagine it themselves. That said it's not really important. What is important is that he believes in the potential of whatever that form of governance was and the player destroyed it by delivering technology that he didn't understand and regardless of intentions you completely destroyed the community because of it. And not only that you basically confirm his suspicions that you're a danger to society because you set off another nuke by accident just playing around with switches you don't understand again in the game. His end goal is not even to necessarily force you to change. His goal is simply to make humanity evolve and give up old world ways of running a society and move on to something new. Whether he dies or not is irrelevant and whether he joins you or not is irrelevant. He just wants to know you stand for something that isn't simply repeating history. Personally I think it's refreshing that a character uses the actions of the player against them. It is an action that is ingrained into our brain to touch and interact with everything in Fallout games and that action is directly what led to the misfortunes of this character even if it happened off screen. TLDR: Dude literally just wants people to stop using forms of society/government that have led to destruction and have proven by history not to work

@@whenisdinner2137 I understand it better than you lol. The context isn't good enough to justify getting lectured by a non character for 5 hours. Ulysses is a narcissistic pessimist and it's hilarious that they retroactively added a character that just simps for the yes man ending. Even if he wasn't that bad there's zero interest in getting lectured essentially just for buying a dlc since that part of the courier's backstory doesn't exist if you don't buy it lol. The idea of buying a guilt trip is not deep or whatever crap you think makes you smart for buying into it.

@@nathantower5565 yeah you can call him self-righteous in his actions and I honestly think he is to some extent but he has a point. How can you claim everything he's saying is wrong when every other political system has failed and led to a literal apocalypse. How can you claim that your character is morally Superior when you literally set off a nuke to open a door just because you didn't know what he did and as a player used to start pushing buttons on instinct. God forbid dude is mad that a potentially better political system wasn't even given a chance because some dipshit courier delivered some nuclear codes and as a result blew the whole city sky high and transformed the place into the closest thing to hell on the planet. Not to mention he himself almost died from it. If you can't stand political commentary why are you even playing a Fallout game in the first place. Everyone has a lecture for you. Everywhere you turn. Turning your brain off because you're mad that the character is dissing things your playable character did off screen doesn't make you smart. 😂

Lonesome Road is a low point on NVs otherwise stellar writing. Ulysses just comes off as annoying. I get what they were going for, but the whole questioning your faction choices thing doesn’t lend itself well to multiple play throughs. DLC would benefit in a big way if there was a way to put down Ulysses and humble him a bit more. He just comes across as a massive hypocrite to me. Obviously every society has flaws Ulysses. I don’t think killing uncounted numbers of innocent people is going to give you the reset you think it will. War never changes and all that

Definitely not the low point, that is clearly honest hearts. The white legs are literally just a faceless organization of raiders with nothing interesting about them. Yall are bugging. A man blaming you for a tragedy caused by you doing a routine delivery job And tracking you all over the mohave desert and eventually sets up a message for you to find to come find him is objectively interesting. Broken down in its most simple formula it's still just fucking cool. For him, it's not necessarily about the recent. It's about making you feel his pain as well by destroying whatever faction you aligned with. And for those that do care about the philosophy of it it's even better.
