I went to school in Irvine. I think it's interesting to note that almost all of the property there is owned by The Irvine Company, run by the Irvine Family. We even have a building named after the founder, Donald Bren. It would have been so cathartic to let out my grievances thru the game.

Just the _idea_ of the car part repairs being a troll and the super mutant fixing it with a kick was funny enough to make me laugh on it's own

Honestly with a few tweaks, Utopia (Irvine and the addition of the studio and car) could have worked imo. A really interesting idea similar to Tranquility lane just in the real world.

The concept for Utopia/Irvine definitely sounds like it inspired Vault City in Fallout 2

I’ll never forget my first time playing fallout 3 as a kid. Like they said, that first moment outside with no direction or knowledge of anything of the outside was incredible.

I live in Irvine and it really is such a strange place. It's everything the ideal suburb should be, and that's what's terrifying about it. It's *too* perfect. And as a commenter above said, the Irvine Company has a near-total monopoly on all the land in the city. Eugh

So interesting to see how much thought goes into these games before they are finalised. Totally realised ideas cut before they are even programmed in, in some cases.

I honestly love the idea of the car ending

The interior of Vault 13 wasn't cut from the game, all you have to do is leave the cave, move 2 tiles on the worldmap, come back and you have a marker on the map that gets you inside the Vault. There's 3 levels and a few quests there, plus a whole bunch of gear.

This Irvine business is so much like a 1950s American western tv show. Evil land barons control a town with an iron fist and make their own law. Really reminds me of several episodes of " Cheyenne." Great 50s Ameri western if anyone else likes them.

Irvine did end up in Wasteland 2 but sadly was very very small The idea of a huge compound with killer robots was recyled into Mathias and his cult who are the main villains of Wasteland 2 And they're just outside Irvine

I think cutting/repurposing the overseer lines was definitely the right call. At least from a role playing perspective since it lets you fill in the blanks about why you were chosen specifically.

If I recall correctly, there is a ghoul in the basement of the Followers of the Apocalypse building who tells you he's also from Vault 13.

Kind of reminds me of the Sierra Madre Villa. Not only does the idea of countless aesthetically identical buildings preserved by a sinister force the same but also the look of the suburbs in Irvine seam extremely similar to the Villa in dead money.

When I played the Fallout 1 in 2 mod for the first time along with no time limits I used the vault as a base and in rp kept bringing supplies, companions, and weapons back with the idea of beefing up the vault's ability to defend itself and increase quality of life. I feel a bit humbled knowing I accidently did what the creators originally intended. Makes being rejected from the vault at the end hit even more. I wasn't just out on some crusade, I was visiting friends and family, spending the holidays in the vault, bringing back supplies...weapons and armour, things they would realistically need and depleate stores of. I wasn't just some hero or legend, I was a (now former) citizen with a copy of the Scout's Handbook and a plasma rifle I'd never get back. Someone who went through hell and sacrificed, planned trips to be home on the right day for years. It felt less like a completion of a storyline and more like a 'start over' button on this imagined life. GG

I can see why the Vault 13 Dweller mutant was cut since it introduces a plot hole. If the mutants had already gotten their hands on someone from the vault, and successfully mutated them, then there shouldn't be any reason why they don't already have Vault 13's location.

As I recall, the door to Vault 13 does eventually open but only after a month or so of game time. You can annoy the other Vault dwellers and harass the Overseer for some bad advice.

It was good to cut all of that. The locations feel out of place within the scope of the story, the items are pointless, and the old ui would have just caused more issues along the way - for example if you want to add more weapon modes. The prolonged V13 intro just makes you take longer to get into the actual game, and everyone who did some scripting in Fo1/2 will know that the scene would have never worked out that way anyways.

You do actually find another vault dweller from V13, who was sent out before you. You can meet him in the basement of the library in Boneyard. He is also partially turned into a mutant. People usually miss that but I've beat F1 more than 30 times. Other than that I'm normal. Mostly.
