Fallout’s Mysterious Sea of Tranquility Conflict
At Concord inside The Museum of Freedom you may have noticed a large mural on the second floor. The placard in front it reads;
“From Lexington and Concord to the shores of Iwo Jima, from the Sea of Tranquility to The Anchorage Front Line, Americans have fought and died through the ages to secure our nation’s freedom. May their sacrifices remind us all that freedom is a privilege afforded to the many yet hard won by a noble few”.
As you can tell the placard is talking about The Revolutionary War, The Second World War, The Sino-American War and The Sea of Tranquillity Conflict.
As of right now the conflict is a complete mystery. There’s no mention of who The United States Armed Forces were fighting, or why they were fighting, or when, all we know is it happened on The Moon.

@@sodoe8214 honestly? It would be cool, maybe an ending where the two sides have to understand that the war is over, everyone of their leaders is dead and now it is pointless to fight anymore. But speaking of that, it would be cool to have a fallout game taking place in Europe, asia and such, or at least some comics, i am curious to see how they fare, what happened. The tether connected to the weapon the astronaut is wielding could be a power line, given that this took place quite a bit before the Great War, energy storage probably wasn't good enough to fit into a pistol, so it could be connected to a backpack battery.

Or that it was against an unpopular enemy, such as the European Commonwealth. Europe fought against the Middle East during the Resource Wars, but the moon would have been a completely different battleground. And if the Resource Wars cut into the supplies and materiel that could be sent to the moon, it's not unfeasible that different groups on the moon would have attacked each other in order to get resources necessary to keep their bases running. Hence why it was a 'conflict' rather than a declared war.

@@st0rts11D4 I’ve always thought there was more to the story. When I first saw the mural I fully expected to see some sort of dlc for Fallout 4 that would explore this lore further, but they never even brought it up again. Which was very odd to me considering Nuka World had SO MUCH space themed stuff. Now I think it was purposely placed there as a subtle hint for a future Fallout game. Kind of like how Fallout 3 left subtle hints at “the Commonwealth” and the Institute with the quest “the replicated man.” I don’t think that’s going to be its location or anything but I wouldn’t be surprised if a future Fallout game goes further into detail on the war that took place on the moon. Maybe we could have a dlc that explores the U.S. government’s military moon base. Maybe the Enclave or Vault Tec still has remnants up there, who knows. Very intriguing to think about.

3:50 considering the fact that we don't see any sign of enemy (and one historical example of such silence), and the general "fight for preservation of freedom" narrative, I think, that this could be a war with Soviet Union. Remember that crazy guy from NV claiming that communists want to take over the moon? This could mean that war actually was fought by US and some communist nation, either USSR or China. Why was it USSR, and not China? Because, as we know from Black Isle games, USSR got the relations normalized with US soon before the war with China and nuclear bombings, to the point of soviet consul and his family finding refuge in the Vault. If Sea of Tranquility Conflict would be against China, there would be no attempt to silence it. The historical example of similar silence would be the soviet perspective on Finnish participation in Great Patriotic War/Continuation War. Soviets valued friendly relations with postwar Finland, since it was one of the several foreign trade gateways, a market for industrial goods (miliary tech in particular) and few other reasons, so the research or attracting public attention to the role finnish army played in 1941-44 wasn't really approved of. It was known, but not actively mentioned in media. For example, a cult classic novel The Dawns Here Are Quiet (that was later adapted as a cult classic movie) was supposed to feature finnish recon group as the antagonists. Instead they had to be replaced with germans. So, why couldn't it be USSR?
@grease_monkey6078
@grease_monkey6078 Жыл бұрын
that sounds plausiable as the US wanted as many allies in their side when the resource wars hit so maybe they tried to hush hush that it was the USSR that was trying to take the moon for themselves in order to keep international relations stable and just fed the media with patriotic soundbites. the moon can't be accessed easily so its easier to hide the truth from the masses

It could easily be a cooling system. For those who don’t know, the only way to get rid of heat in a vacuum is to radiate it away in the form of infrared radiation. Infrared radiation is what thermal cameras see in. In an atmosphere, air particles touch a hot object and absorb thermal energy from it. This process is many times faster at cooling an object than just radiating the heat. Since radiating heat is so slow, it means any weapons used in space will very rapidly overheat. Firearms eject brass casings which absorb some of the heat, but even so, guns will rapidly overheat in space. If the ammo is caseless like in Starfield, there is no heat sink at all for the gun, and it will overheat fast… Obviously Bethesda still has no idea how guns work and thinks caseless ammo is a good fit for space. Lasers are very inefficient weapons. Most of the energy which passes into them is not shot out in the form of a laser beam, but stays inside the laser in the form of thermal energy - heat. This means that in any space application, a laser would be in serious danger of melting down. We don’t have plasma weapons in real life, but I think they’d have the same problem as lasers. The cord in the mural could be cycling coolant through the weapon to keep it from melting down. This heat would then get deposited in a heat sink in the backpack, and potentially transferred to a radiator after combat to get rid of the heat.

another odd thing about the mural 1:00 shows the battleship USS Missouri, made explicitly clear by including the hull number. this would make sense considering she's the battleship that the surrender of japan was signed on. what makes this odd is that if you look at the ship on the mural it has 4 turrets instead of the Iowa classes' 3, making the Missouri a Montana class, which never got built IRL. this could be just an art goof, but i find that unlikely given the Iowa class is probably the most photographed class of ships in history so an abundance of reference material would be available. so this makes it a change that predates the end of WWII.

When people articulate it as there being a single point of divergence, they just mean that the epicenter of change lies in the fusion vs. computers situation. Any point before that would function like the example of Hitler in time travel - you can't kill him as the universe will bend over backwards to prevent his death. The point of divergence would be the moment where this rule can officially be broken, the universe would stop self-correcting.

I just assumed it was a battle determining who controls the moon (and can thus set up missiles and such on it to attack their enemies. Or establish shelters for their future people in the case of planetary conflict (IE, the great war), there could very well be an entire settlement on the moon in Fallout, waiting for the radiation to clear so they can return to earth) Figured it was more about its strategic location being a large satellite that can house countless weapons of mass destruction from relative safety, rather than about the raw resources on it If it was a simple race, it wouldn't be commemorated in the way it is, with soldiers, and weapons there. Yes, there could've been some conflict, but not ON the moon, the conflicts would've been on the ground, preventing the other from going, or in the sky, shooting down the rockets

Yep, just feels like even more of a dick-measuring contest than the real Space Race, with an Aerospace Administration even more closely tied to the military structure of the government. If astronauts are considered part of the military, and the moon is considered a bold exploration of a final frontier, then the landings on the Sea of Tranquility are indeed 'our brave troops winning for America and Apple Pie up there on the Moon!' even without a shot in anger. And explains why America can simply stop going, as the resource war makes such action a costly distraction It's the most reasonable explanation for a complete lack of detail about any armed lunar conflicts, and yet their inclusion in the environmental storytelling of Fallout 3 and 4

With the inclusion of this lore and the warfare that obviously took place on the moon according to the mural it opens up so many possibilities. Obviously there has to be several military bases / facilities located on the moon which means there has to be a lot of supporting infrastructure set up on the moon as well. Are there still remnants of the U.S. government, or the Enclave up there? And what about Vault Tec , are the leaders of Vault Tec still up there hidden away, still monitoring their insane vault experiments? Or maybe they were even trapped on their moon base after the Great War and all died off having no way to get back to earth. So many questions that just make the mind wonder.

I have an alternative idea. The lack of information found in game makes me believe the conflict had some degree of shame associated with it or was mostly classified. With the realization that resources were dwindling and conflict looming I think there was a portion of the government or elite with an escapist plan to colonize the moon and space while the planet gets nuked. This would have led to split factions and a possibility of a small scale civil war that the general public would have little information on with most of it being propaganda.

Most likely, the laser weaponry utilized by the United States before some kind of superconducting and fusion power technology, resulting in more compact variants.
@Warfighter-lf7tb
@Warfighter-lf7tb Жыл бұрын
@@spazzey0 I also considered that as well. Realistically it would still have value as power armor conceptual (due to game design not requiring it) has no means of carrying ammo. Having a power pack for basic weapons would be a good stand in for a lack of pockets or fighting rig for magazines. If fusion cores were better I'd even argue you could just plug specialty weapons into your armor like a wall outlet lol

I theorize that the reason it's not discussed could be that the enemy was other Americans that wanted independence from the USSA I'm still curious about the success of the Alantropa Project. This was an idea proposed in the 1920s of draining the Mediterranean Sea to make more living space and agricultural development. According to the map in the DIA switchboard, this project was pursued and the Mediterranean does not exist in the fallout universe

Regular firearms don't really work in space. The vacuum means the heat from firing doesn't dissipate, and the metal on metal will eventually friction weld the parts together.

The Astronaut's weapon is most likely a laser weapon since due to the moons almost non-existent atmosphere, the light would not loose strength over distance which would give it longer range and more power than on earth. Since swapping out power cells in a space suit in low gravity whilst under fire would be suicidal, the cord would most likely be a continuous feed power cable connected to a fusion power pack. As for the conflict itself, wasn't VB supposed to have a mission on the moon? I'm sure I've heard something about this in the past.

It would be neat to center a fallout campaign around one of the lost military ships. Filled with soldiers,scientists and engineers, shot off course and unknowing of the last 200 years. Now that they’re coming home, it’s a race for factions for who can take control of or destroy this craft as its research, technology and warfare capabilities would be a game changer

My theory, and I know it's silly, but judging from the Mothership Zeta DLC in fallout 3 I would hazard a guess that first contact was made on the moon and it didn't go well for the humans, but as someone else said given America's pride meant that it was largely not talked about despite being a milestone moment in human history.

The Sea of Tranquility conflict might also have been a reason for the Y-17 Trauma Override Harness, from Big MT. The design of it would easily allow it to become the standard spacesuit and it had the ability to "walk" autonomously along with engaging enemies while the user was unconscious or injured to the point they couldn't fight, something very important in low gravity situations as moving is hard enough, and evacuating a casualty would be near impossible.

Great video! I think your own inclusion of the Van Buren details that later became DLC for Fallout New Vegas is key to understanding the Sea of Tranquility event. The studios, STUDIOS, involved in making the Fallout games have done a great job of world building on key elements the fan base has responded to. Look at the BoS lore building that's been done across generations, or the sympathetic super mutant/Nightkin communities. I feel that Fallout 4 had a very specific story they wanted to tell, but felt free to leave dangling threads that could later be pulled upon.

Given that the Soviet Union survived in the Fallout universe, and were on friendlier terms with the US, they likely have a base on the moon themselves, given in our own world the technologies they built during the Space age and their experimentation with energy weapons. So I'd consider them as an observer in the Sea of Tranquility conflict as well.

Isn't that the definition of a cult piece of media? Look at the expanded Star wars universe. George Lucas could have spent every waking moment of his life writing the galaxy far far away and he wouldn't have made a dent in the media there is now (books, games, computer games, TV shows, comics, audiobook/plays and then all the fan created stuff on KZfaq etc)

I think it was a throwaway reference. I actually hoped for a DLC, would've been worthwhile, maybe set in a crater, with lunar bases/vaults, ghoul survivors, robots pointlessly continuing the war, perfectly preserved habitats made with a functioning GECK, maybe crashed aliens, some cool lunar themed energy/plasma weapons and power armor, stuff like that.

I haven’t seen anyone bringing up Jason Bright. Him and his ghoul tribe survived on the moon, so it’s not likely that aliens still inhabit it.

I personally like to think it was Xetans. They couldn't hide the fact that a fight was happening, because, as you said, the fight was happening where it would have been visible to anyone with a decent telescope. So, they blamed the fighting on the Chinese or the Europeans, or whoever was the most convenient scapegoat that they needed to galvanize the people against.

I think the problem is that it's a case of overthinking it. Since we don't even know if they were explicately referring to the moon when saying the Sea of Tranquility and if you only look at mural while ignoring that line it more likely conveys an idea of moving into the future where they hopefully colonize space. And even if it is related it's probably just referring to space travel casualties with a more militarized NASA between WW2 and The Great War in times of peace rather than a proper war.

This could be included in Starfield! Landing on the moon and finding ancient relics from the conflict. Pieces of old spacesuits, weapons and so on. Perhaps even ancient, partially corrupted voice logs! Wouldn't even have to be all that much, just something to flesh it out a bit. That would be huge. It would probably cause continuity issues in the Fallout universe but who cares. Plenty of those anyway.

For me, it's mostly because I crave adventure. Any game that has adventure, I love it dearly. Fallout 3 and 4 have excellent moments that would leave any adventurer in shock-and-awe. That's the reason why I play mostly BGS (Bethesda Game Studios) games. They always have the adventure in mind first and foremost. Like, what can the player do aside from doing the main quest? These games allow you to put off the story and create your own adventure! Starfield will be no different. ;)
