A popular multi-day hike in the Victorian High Country is the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing, situated in the Alpine National Park. It starts at Heathy Spur Carpark in Falls Creek and ends at Mount Loch Carpark in Mount Hotham. The hike takes 3 days and covers 37km.
We began the hike in Falls Creek Village and walked to Heathy Spur Carpark which sits next to Rocky Valley Storage. This is the trailhead for the hike, and it is well sign posted with lots of information and a trip intentions book.
From the beginning we had great views of Rocky Valley Storage and the trail was pretty flat with a gradual ascent up into the high plains.
We then went off the trail and headed up to summit Victoria’s fifth tallest mountain, Mount Nelse at 1,876m.
Then we took a couple more detours to visit the historic Edmondson Hut and Johnston Hut which were definitely worth a look.
Back on the trail we continued on to Cope Hut Campsite where we camped the night on a tent platform. The campsite had a decent toilet, water tank and picnic table so we were pretty impressed. Cope Hut was also gorgeous, I love exploring the alpine huts!
Day 2 began a little later as we only had 14km to cover so we weren’t in a hurry. We passed Cope Saddle Hut (SEC Hut) and Pole 333 along the trail through the high plains. We saw a large group of brumbies (wild horses) which was pretty incredible. Just before our descent to Dibbins Hut Campsite we also had great views of Mount Feathertop.
We arrived at our campsite with a lot of daylight left. We set up our tent on the platform and then explored the valley. Right next to the campsite is the Cobungra River which is a great water source and it’s so beautiful. We also enjoyed looking inside the historic Dibbins Hut.
Day 3 was only 9km, but we had over 500m to ascend so we knew it would be a little tough. We got going pretty early and made our way up to Derrick Hut. After a short lunch break, we continued on. We decided to another extra summit along the way to Victoria’s sixth tallest mountain, Mount Loch. The rocky terrain was incredible, and the views of Mount Feathertop and the Razorback were definitely worth it! We even saw snow!
We arrived at Mount Loch Carpark mid-afternoon and were pretty proud of our efforts. This hike is one I would HIGHLY recommend.

I cross-country skied into Johnson hut from Falls in 1995 and 1997! It doesnt look like much has changed there... I don't remember a shower though, lol.

Great video! Perhaps its the altitude, that made the hike harder than you expected.

Hi. Great video. I’m just booking my trip now. Thinking of parking the car at Bright and taxiing to Falls and back from Hotham. Do you have better ideas or advice of transport or parking? Thanks!
@AdventuresofKatelyn
@AdventuresofKatelyn 2 жыл бұрын
How exciting! Transport is the hardest thing about this hike 😩 A taxi will cost a fortune but look into other transport options and companies such as 'Snow Dog Transport'.

Would you recommend carrying a solar panel or a battery pack should do?
@AdventuresofKatelyn
@AdventuresofKatelyn 3 жыл бұрын
Battery pack would definitely be enough for this hike as it’s only 3 days. This solar panel was new and we were trying it out for the first time!

How do you get water along the hike?

In lakes and rivers. There was plenty of water during this hike. The first campsite also had a rainwater tank.

I’m not actually sure to be honest! You would have to check with Parks Victoria but I wouldn’t camp right on the summit as it is very exposed

You should avoid the profanity, it won’t be appreciated by a big percentage of viewers and will definitely cost subscriptions, and it’s worse coming from a female.
