The families of 20 people killed in the 2018 upstate limo crash are now preparing for a possible trial. The judge in the case shocked the courtroom Wednesday when he rejected a plea deal for the limo company operator. CBS2's Tony Aiello has reaction to the unexpected twist in this tragedy.

I hope these people can get closure with a trial. The truth will come out, the driver was a drug addict. He was also the right hand man to the owner of the limousine company. I bet he also helped to take the sticker off the windshield of the limousine. His wife once said her husband would never drive a car that was not properly a safe ride. But I disagree I ridden in many vehicles with him over the years. He drove cars that would not pass inspection many times. He hit a deer once, the car was all smashed in ,he still drove the car. The tire was rubbing against the fender, oil and water leaking all over. The lawyer is trying to blame Mavis, that is just to throw the blame on someone else other than the owner of the limousine company. Mr. Kinlin is a creep a shafty lawyer at best.

OBVIOUSLY you haven't followed this trial...Mavis charged for brake work that, UNDER OATH the mechanic testified was never done..The store manager used the mechanic's DMV license to pass the Limo..BTW, Mavis was not an authorized inspection station for Limos...Concluding to driver was a " drug addict" just because he had pot in his system is NOT what caused this accident..He paid with his life along with 19 others for the negligence of the Mavis manager..

There is 1 way the limousine could’ve stopped put it into reverse and then floor it. Then at 20 Kph turn the engine off and put the handbrake on. There would be tons injuries but 0 deaths.

Thank you so much for the information! Do this method apply if your brakes fail in a regular as well?? I am a good driver and has to do a few maneuvers myself to avoid idiots on the road! Such a terrible tragedy!😢

Was it the defense or the defendant who rejected the 1 - 4 years in prison? If it was the defense, I guess the attorney was thinking he had a great appeal case for overturning the verdict. Meanwhile, the defendant is serving a 5 - 15 year sentence.

What I don't understand is how the State of New York did not have safe guards in place. Like how can someone modify a vehicle to any length they want. Put a bunch of seats in the vehicle. Now the vehicle out ways the brake system, and the electric systems cannot operate as expected, causing problems with the engine as sudden acceleration without stepping on the gas. The only thing the driver could do is apply the brakes, and of course there was none. That's why no skid marks. So at the time of this tragedy their were no laws or regulations on modifying a vehicle you could do what ever you wanted to do to a vehicle. That's like giving the OK to letting a person with the BAC of 3.0 drive a car.
