I dunno. Hiking alone is pretty nice. Takes a certain temperament I guess, but I've done the whole colorado trail & the longest state on the AT (VA) solo, plus at least another hundred nights alone in the backcountry. It's very meditative. You can get your dog out presuming you double his weight. I'd probably stash all but super-essentials & put him in the main body of my pack in my sleeping bag. Be about a 90pound hump out... which would REALLY suck, but it's doable. 90 is ~what a machine gunner in the infantry humps. Carried 75 on outward bound for 3 weeks in the Sangres (7,500-12,500 elevation on the trails, rough terrain. Serious mountains.) Hopefully it would be mostly downhill. BTW, don't do outward bound unless you actually _are_ a troubled teen. I thought it was NOLS at the time.

This happened to one of my Deerhounds. He broke his leg high in the hills. It took me three hours to carry him down alone. He was obviously in excruciating pain but, bless him, he stayed still and I fireman lifted him over my shoulders the whole rocky trek down. He weighs 42 kilos and I only weigh 58 kilos, so it was a battle, but there was nothing that was going to stop me that day. After a few rounds of surgery he's made a full recovery. I'm so happy to still have him in my life. 😊

Had this happen with my parents' dog. She just started lagging behind and wanted to lie down. The bottom of her pad had torn loose and was hanging down. I ended up fireman carrying her the mile or two back to the car. It's funny how a dog that would usually struggle to get down, and hated being held, just sat there and panted happily the whole time. She was an aussie sheppard, so not quite as big as this lab, and it was mostly flat ground. I was still very happy to make it back to the car.

This happened to my dog, Jake, who was about thirteen kilos. He tore a cruciate ligament six kilometres up a mountain. It was just him and me and my three other dogs. The journey back was a nightmare, my little backpack was only designed to carry a waterbottle and a drinking dish, not a fat Staffy cross. He was limp and saggy, there was really no way to hold him except like a baby in my arms. Im small myself, the trip back took two hours. We had a fabulous vet, the ligament was fixed and Jake recovered completely.

Here in the UK, if he visited a Vet, the owner would be advised to review his diet. The dog suffers every day, eventually, with damaged and painful joints, also a shortened life. If a dog doesn’t have a visible waist, like a human pot belly, it is overweight.

I also had a yellow lab who, during my workdays, had to be left in the "care" of uncaring people who must have locked him up most of the time without exercise, and probably fed him with plenty of their greasy leftovers. So he became quite overweight. I could not have lifted him on my shoulders, let alone carried him for 5 minutes.

I was thinking the same thing. They are stocky dogs as it is, but the extra weight isn't good. Maybe after having to lug him back down the mountain, they'll consider getting him to lose some weight.

@@IntriguedLioness Your fuzzy companion relies on you. If you try to carry him, I promise that YOU will get hurt, too. I hate the thought of anyone suffering. Can I suggest that if you leave cellular range, you provide someone you trust with an *exact* map of where you're going and an estimated time of arrival? Perhaps get a Sat phone or at least a GPS device? That way, someone can get to you asap. I know we love the feeling of being free, but sometimes a little security can go a long way. ❤

Our late Blue Tic suffered a leg injury when we were going on a climb up a mountain creek/waterfall and I had to carry her out, she was about 60 to 80 lbs. Fortunately it was only about 2 miles. At the Vets the XRays showed up a break as well as some shot in her side. She was a rescue that had been found wandering in the mountains. This was before the days of microchips, internet, and social media, and the owner/hunter couldn't be located. Even though it has been over 40 years ago, we still miss her. She was the best.

Kai's a lovely BIG boy. He looks 90-100 lb range? (I'm a 63 year old granny.) I was dog-sitting my son's 110 lb GSD, Leo, when I looked out in my backyard (Phoenix, Arizona), and he was laying there. I checked on him - he was flat-out non-responsive. It turned out to be 10/10 worst anaphylaxis reaction to scorpion sting. My neighbors helped me get him in the car, I couldn't even drag him. Thank God my male neighbor was home, and another male neighbor drove up in time to help get Leo into the car. $10,000 of veterinary care later, they saved him! The vet told my daughter-in-law if I'd gotten him there 30 more minutes later, he wouldn't have made it. They knocked bill down to $8500 (their previous estimate), and another 10% because my daughter-in-law worked in medical field. They were so kind - knowing I was dog & grandbaby-sitting while my 1 year old grandson had surgery that morning. Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is who saved Leo, they were fantastic, and we got to stay at his side the entire time. They're still paying off the bill, also thank goodness CareCredit financing, and GoFundMe help.
