Family Doctor Faces 9 Creepy Sex Abuse Allegations

Ай бұрынDr. Edsel Sandoval, 36, faces 20 sex crimes charges related to allegations he used his job to sexually abuse female patients. Sandoval was a doctor at Yuma Regional Medical Center until the first allegation surfaced in July 2023. More women came forward earlier this year with stories that Sandoval touched them inappropriately and sexually assaulted them. Sandoval has pleaded not guilty. Law&Crime's Angenette Levy talks with Sgt. Lori Franklin of the Yuma Police Department about the case in this episode of Crime Fix - a daily show covering the biggest stories in crime.

These types of people will go above and beyond to find victims. Many will take on jobs like police officers and teachers to get easy access to their victims. If a doctor were to tell you to strip naked you would not question it. You would have no idea until the assault was already happening.

@@Skitdora2010 i work for a major state university medical center as a medical assistant. any time a male doctor is to perform any invasive tests on a female patient, our providers are required to find a female medical assistant as a chaperone. i am surprised and disappointed to learn that is not always the case.

Im appalled at the comments saying how did it happen twice. You don't know how long she went there and nothing like that happened. Then one day he sticks a finger in her tush and she gives him the benefit of the doubt. Alot of women say their boyfriend "accidentally" went in there. So why would we question the validity of her claim. When it happened the second time it confirmed that the previous time was in fact not an accident. We shouldn't shame her for trusting her physician. Twice is enough to show a pattern.

With doctors it is often done under the pretense of it being a medical examination. Half your brain is telling you that didn't seem right, the other half is telling you that you should trust him because he is a doctor. Bear in mind that women often have to have examinations that go into areas you don't normally let people touch such as cervical smears of examinations for breast cancer.

I am baffled! I remember going to a doctor who had porno sounds set as his ring tone...it went off in the middle of an exam and instantly i became very uncomfortable and i never went back there again!!!

I had this happen after i was seriously incapacitated after a car crash. Please watch out for your loved ones dont leave them alone with staff all the time they pick up on that and will take advantage

@@____username____ That is true but it is okay to self-advocate and rather than bring your own "chaperone" to your Pap smear speak up and say something like, "Where is the nurse or your assistant? I would feel more comfortable with someone else present." Many times young women or worried sick women are like deer in the headlights and that is understandable too. It is a vulnerable situation. But it is okay to stand up for yourself and it is okay that you couldn't for whatever reason.

@genericamerican7574 Absolutely! I'm a medical assistant and have been a chaperone for multiple patients. It protects all parties involved. I stood off to the side and made sure the pap was timely, comfortable, and no one did anything weird. This should be common practice.

Theres many states that allow medical students to perform pelvic and prostate examination on unconscious patients who did not consent to it. Even when the reason they are under is completely unrelated to gynecological concerns for ex a broken foot.

She may very well have been in denial. Patient is often fully horizontal, and therefore does not have even a remotely direct view of what's happening. It's absolutely feasible that this woman is thinking, for example, a brief finger insertion feels more like a penis but wants so badly to believe this isn't happening. She has to follow up for some reason, maybe a biopsy, and is not in a position to go doctor-shopping at that moment. So she goes for the follow-up, and the same damn thing happens. Maybe it's right then, or maybe down the road after hearing stories that she decides to report. Either way, that takes some enormous strength and a solid trust in your own instinct. The latter is a struggle for plenty of us day to day, let alone patients in such a vulnerable position.

That’s not correct. Family physicians are trained in performing basic gynecological care. What’s odd is a male physician performing sensitive patient exams on females without a chaperone present. This is done not only as a courtesy to the patient but to also protect the physician in the case of a false accusation.

It should be a law that a female (nurse, PA, etc) be in the room when a male doctor is touching a female patient. It's a law in the country that I live in and it's for the safety of the patient (because of cases like this) but also protects the doctor against potential false accusations or misunderstandings. The OBGYN I go to has 11 obgyns and only 1 is female. All of the males always have a female nurse who works with them and stands in the room when exams or ultrasounds are done .

The Dr. lost me up until the part of penetration. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was examining the breast for signs of a breast tumour. Then the penetration part came and I almost puked. Absolutely no excuse. Disgusting.

This situation and these comments are more evidence as to why i choose the bear. I had a doctor when I was 12 ish who reached his hand all the way up my shirt to my breasts to listen to my heart. I was wearing my school uniform which included a collared shirt. He definitely could have listened over my shirt or just asked me to unbutton my shirt if the shirt was muffling it. I was uncomfortable but I hadn’t been to the doctor so much so back then so I wasn’t totally sure it was improper. My mom was in the room so I wasn’t scared of anything more happening but yeah looking back as an adult it was effed up. I also remember him making a comment about my breasts. I shudder to think what could have happened if my mom wasn’t there. It’s easy for doctors to abuse patients especially in low income areas…

I didn’t hear whether there was a nurse in the exam room while these things happened. We always have a nurse with us when performing pelvic exams/Pap smear. Generally when doing breast exam a chaperone isn’t generally required. A recto-vaginal exam is often part of a vaginal exam. If a nurse wasn’t in the room during a pelvic exam it is the clinic’s fault not to provide a nurse assistant/chaperone.
