A teen who died after reportedly attempting a social media challenge was given a touching send-off before his organ donation (Warning: Distressing Images)

Mason Bogard was given a final send-off before his organ donation.
Friends and family gathered for the teens Honor Walk as he was wheeled into surgery. The 15-year-old was found unresponsive at home on May 1. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but his mother wrote that he wasn’t able to be saved.
“Shortly after we learned that there was nothing that should be done to bring Mason back, we talked about organ donation…” she stated in a Facebook post. “While we are devastated that we will never experience so many things with Mason again, we are able to find some comfort in the fact that Mason will save the lives of others. He would have wanted it this way. He was an extremely generous young man.”
Mason’s mom Joann says he died while trying a social media challenge, in which people try to choke themselves. The local coroner’s office say the cause of death is still under investigation and police say the game wasn’t mentioned when they first responded.
113,000+ people are on the national transplant waiting list as of January 2019. While each donor can potentially save up to eight lives, only 58% of U.S. adults are registered as organ donors.

I had this done to me 40 years ago, I didn't pass out just got dizzy. They did it to my sister and she was passed out completely. Then they said everyone sit and watch tv like nothing happened. When she came to she was just looking around like where am I. They did it to my brother and he fell back on a matress and hit his head. It was funny then but now I know how dangerous it was. I was about 8 years old at the time.

I just started my PhD in Communications and the focus of my research is on youth and social media. We need people to start talking to kids about how to use social media in a way that is beneficial and safe. But so many parents and schools aren’t even aware of all of the things their kids are watching and seeing, and kids brains aren’t developed enough yet to know better. There’s so many issues here but my heart breaks for Mason’s family. RIP Mason

I agree. So many people blame smartphones and apps and games... As a society, we need to raise our kids to be able to identify and avoid risks no matter what others are doing. We need to make them understand that they are their own person with their own thoughts and that "fitting in" is not always in their best interest. Teach them how to think for themselves. Start instilling all of this in them at a much younger age than was necessary before, and monitor everything they do online until you're satisfied that they have that understanding.
@trickortrump3292

Another important part of your focus should be approaching stories like this with a healthy degree of skepticism. All it takes anymore is someone to make a claim and it instantly becomes a “fact” that spreads through social media. Nobody asks questions anymore. Watching this video, it immediately struck me that this seemed to be a lot like Archie Battersbee. He committed suicide by hanging and his mom refused to accept that he was brain dead and made ridiculous claims about how the hospital was starving him to death so they could harvest his organs. She also told everyone who would listen, that it wasn’t a suicide but was instead, this challenge. There was tons of stuff on his social media that proved the kid was suicidal and like this kid, he wasn’t recording himself doing it, so it obviously wasn’t part of any tiktok challenge. I did a little digging and Mason’s mom’s story about this being a social media challenge has wildly evolved. She first said that the police had told her about the challenge and that they had found a video on his seized computer. The police denied they said anything like that and claimed there was zero evidence of him taking part in any social media challenge. Then she claimed that “maybe the police missed the video” but that makes no sense since she originally claimed the police are the ones who found the video and that’s how she learned about it. Then she claimed that SHE found a video but when a reporter asked if he could see a small part of the video so he could just verify it existed, she claimed it would be “too painful”. She’s clearly lying.

This is so tragic. My condolences to the family. This is why I hate social media, especially for children. Children are not responsible enough or mature enough to handle the things seen on social media. Lives are cut to short, and families are torn apart.

I was doin this in the early 2000’s as well, can’t believe I didn’t die from this.. the only issue is the internet has become more accessible to children with no adult supervision :( this shouldn’t have happened but as long as kids have unsupervised internet use age .. they’ll either stumble upon this accidentally and try it or they’ll be one google search away from it, when I was like 9 years old all it took was one search “ how to get high without drugs “ and boom the first thing that popped up was this. Me and my little sister did it constantly:(

What a generous and brave family, to allow Mason to live on, helping other folks to live. I’m so sorry for your loss - there is no greater pain than the loss of a child or grandchild. I was the POA for care for one of my Aunts, and I have been through the Organ Donor process in Canada. Her team was also very caring and supportive, and she was a Nurse who had made her wishes very clear. I lost my 30 year old Nephew, very suddenly, six years ago, so I have some idea of the heartache you are enduring. I’m so very sorry that some horrible TikTok challenge took Mason from you. Bless you for your and Mason’s generosity, and gift of life. Bless you all.

Never seen or heard of this so called challenge. This is probably not the full story about the "challenge". Not as if autoerotic strangling hasn't been around for 100s if not 1000s of years. This is what comes of not teaching children about reality of life. Bad decisions shouldn't be lauded or hushed up. Organ donation is the ultimate gift, but parents going through needless grief like this is devastating.
