Fortunately, despite its size, it's actually a full-grown owl and they're pretty hardy as a species even for being in this situation for a few days. There was one that was trapped in the Plaza Hotel a few years ago in New York that was still fairly kicking despite being in the building for a week before Animal Control was able to catch it. Note: For those conserned, they had been going after it for about five days- it was discovered two days after the Christmas tree had been brought in and the owl was apparently NOT having any sort of "Let us humans carefully capture you, give you a check up and then release you back into the forest the tree was cut down in" like... at all. It was only after they tired it out and baited it that AC could safely bring it to a sanctuary where it could get more food and rest.

If anyone finds an owl like this, please call a wildlife rehab in your area (if possible). They will check for injuries (especially if this owl was bundled up/transported on top of a car or truck while packed inside a tree) and rehab him until he's regained full strength. Even if there are no injuries, if he's been inside a house for four days, they will make sure he's properly hydrated/fed and then release him into a species appropriate habitat area if it's not possible to release him where the actual tree was cut down. This kind of release is better than nothing obviously, but if you're able to go that extra mile and get him to a wildlife rehabber, please consider it to give the owl the best chances for survival.

Just because it is a small owl doesn't mean it's a baby. There are several varieties of small owls in North America. He may be a full grown screech owl or other full grown small-sized ear-tufted owl. Also, owls have babies in the Spring, so this is probably not considered a "baby" owl by December.

Luckily this is a full grown Screech Owl. They are small owls and even full grown adults are only 6 - 10 in in height. I would have preferred some water and a mouse dinner before release but trying to find a wildlife center for wild birds to get rehab is almost impossible in some areas. We once saved a hawk that had flown into grandpa's window and not a single place would take him. Grandpa instead put him inside a box for an hour and then opened the box. Stunned, he looked at us both as if to say, "What the heck did you put me in a box for!" then flew off. lol The owl will likely survive now that he is released and will be able to make his own way home.

@@IanCthrwd That isn’t a baby owl, it’s a full grown screech owl. Baby owls have downy feathers. And nobody took this owl home intentionally. People ought to check their trees more thoroughly before they bring them home, obviously. I worked at a wildlife refuge and as long as they released this owl back into the wild, he will find his way home. No need to get angry, owls are my favorite animals.

Cute story, but wrong owl ID. That is a mature 'Gray Morph' Eastern Screech Owl. Babies have very woolly looking 'down' until they are ready to fledge (make their first flight). The adult Screech Owl is very small in stature -- about 7-10 in. tall. They are very docile owls, and are very skilled fliers and hunters of rodents, snakes, and lizards. Their call sounds like a high-pitched horse whinny. I'm familiar with these sweet little guys, as we were blessed to have a family of them living in our back yard a few years ago -- three babies, mom and dad. We also had a 'Red/Rufous Morph' Eastern Screech Owl living in our tree in the front yard -- prettiest owl I've ever seen. 🙂

Eastern Screech-Owls eat most kinds of small animals, including birds and mammals as well as surprisingly large numbers of earthworms, insects, crayfish, tadpoles, frogs, and lizards. They eat many kinds of mammals, including rats, mice, squirrels, moles, and rabbits. Small birds taken as prey include flycatchers, swallows, thrushes, waxwings, and finches, as well as larger species such as jays, grouse, doves, shorebirds, and woodpeckers. This owl is agile enough to occasionally prey on bats, and can rarely even be cannibalistic. When prey is plentiful, Eastern Screech-Owls cache extra food in tree holes for as long as four days. So NO it probably was not lacking food if it was only inside for 4 days.

Given that all the feathers are out, it at least might be a fledgling and not simply a behbeh. It is amazing how quiet some critters can be. We have a young iguana who has taken up residence in our yard. He is so bright green, I can see him when he comes out on the grass. But the dogs have walked within feet of him and never noticed because he stays so still. (Edit: I'm not in Florida and iguanas are native here)

Isn't that something... 🙂 BTW, it's an adult bird, not a baby. Maybe a screech owl. The reason it stayed in the tree is mostly because it has eyes that are super sensitive to light. So it was probably blinded by the home's bright interior lighting. (Late at night, it might've flown around the house then returned to roost in the tree.)
