As a bike commuter, this upsets me. It is way too common for bicyclists to get hit by vehicles, though not normally by an impaired driver. Being hit by a car, bumped by a car causing bike to tip over, getting "doored" (when a car door is suddenly opened into oncoming bicycle traffic, causing bike to flip & crash): these are things that happen way too often to bicyclists. If we are out for a family ride, or saving gas by riding our bikes to work, we deserve a safe ride as much as a car's occupants get. I've been told that I need to get a GoPro or similar camera onto my bike helmet, because if I were hit from behind, and am unconscious, its the driver's word that carries the truth. "He came out of nowhere!" is the excuse drivers use, and its all down to them not paying close attention to the road. Best wishes to this family, I wish to hear good news of recovery ahead for them.

Truly hope they will be okay. But this is why I don't ride anymore. With SoCal traffic conditions, I figure it's only a matter of time before I eventually get hit. Truly a shame that we don't have better, safer bike infrastructure for a region that has such temperate climate.

Car and automobile Drivers needs to understand than pedestrians and bicyclists always have the right of way and must always be protected at all cost... Give them room even if they are in the wrong! This family doesn't deserve this. They were trying to enjoy life together but the driver destroyed that and now makes them fearful for life... Sad, but prayers for them to recover please!!

I cannot stand drunk drivers. It’s a choice no matter how much you drink. My mom was killed by a drunk driver. Alcohol is such a terrible drug. I pray that everyone in this family makes a full recovery, my heart breaks for this mother.

Parents not smart. I wouldnt had risked it. Drivers are crazier every year. Then the illegal street take overs taking place during the day and night yet the cops dont do anything. So many cars driving over the speed limit. A lot of road rage. I would of taken them on a trail or beach or park to ride the bicycles.
