As a college professor, I'm horrified. I look at my students as my academic children. I lost a student to a terrible allergic reaction to medication. She had a stroke and died at 21. I could barely keep my composure as I sat in audience at her funeral. I still can't believe that lovely and wonderful young woman is gone. It's heartbreaking. Hazing has to stop. Our children are the most precious people on the earth. I never want to watch another student be taken away. It's awful and crushing.

Are these college kids stupid? 40 shots in a short amount of time? That’s alcohol poisoning! Edit ***"these college kids*** was not referred to the victim, but to his peers who may or may not understand drinking. I wrote this comment with anger towards the victim's peers. My apologies to everyone who misinterpreted my comment and hurt them or caused misunderstanding in the process. This is an unfortunate case with so much sadness. What was supposed to be, was taken away too soon. Prayers and love to friends and family of the victim.

@Jesus' Body seems like you’re more of a Pharisee type than knowing anything about Jesus... I’m not a Christian, in part due to the evil rhetoric spewed by people like you. You’re helping satan out more than Jesus, ever consider that? Satan seduces with hatred and self righteous judgement...Jesus demonstrated love and grace. Jesus hung out with the tax collector, spoke to and listened to the prostitute, his example was one of humility, kindness, connection and compassion. You might want to revisit what it’s all about, the fruits of the spirit, working on your own stuff. You can NOT simultaneously judge and love someone. What’s it going to be? What changes the world more? What would you want from someone else? Judgment or love. God is love. At least try to be more of that.
@Alphacentauri819
@Alphacentauri819 3 жыл бұрын
@Jesus' Body I said nothing about how someone feels. It’s about YOU, whether you are extending grace, love etc. Plus YOU know nothing about their relationship with god. ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALLEN SHORT. That includes YOU. God didn’t ask for YOU to be the judge, I’m pretty sure he’s got that covered. So, quit trying to usurp his job, look how that turned out for satan. Work on you. Your love will convince others of a god that exists...far more than your hypocritical self righteousness. You’re doing a great job being satans right hand man. Unwittingly, You need a redo of your heart. I’m not Christian...yet, I have more love, more divine, because I’m not fundamentally bound by rhetoric and propaganda. I believe in god being love and of redemption and relationship. Your approach is anti-love, anti-connection, anti-relationship. Consider your actual goals and how you’re obstructing them. Self awareness and general spiritual awareness seems acutely off your radar. Wake up.

It is. But because there is no way for universities to enforce these rules. It's very hard when parties and hazing take place off campus too. Also, many kids join these orgs for social acceptance -- many just want to make friends or be a part of something "cool," but there usually are so many consequences.

@@SLone3251 well maybe we need stop promoting a culture that endorses drinking and drugging oneself into a stupor and degrading oneself for the entertainment of others, as cool. @@nadinadi8385 I agree but how are we gonna do that when 1) this kinda behavior has gone on for DECADES in the Greek system, and 2) Kids these days are maturing faster than ever before? You can teach someone all the good and upright things about acceptance and navigating early adulthood, but they're still going to be pressured in some ways or go into something thinking it's one thing and it turns out to be something else. And kids going into college are going to naturally take more risk and explore different things. You'd have to delete social media and ban partying to stop this behavior. I don't think education can help (D.A.R.E and S.A.N.E. sure didn't, altho those were for drugs, not alcohol)...but I don't know what preventative systems can be put into place to prevent hazing. I don't know. Cuz clearly the light approach universities are taking doesn't do shit. We've had 3 or 4 deaths this year already from Greek-related partying/drinking.

i 100 percent blame his parents. if my child called and told me she had to do some drinking ritual to get into a fraternity i would have absolutely told her not to especially if she did not want to do it in the first place. the internet is riddled with stories about teens losing their lives to dumb s**t like this. i show them to my daughter whenever one pops up on my timeline. also, i raised her to have confidence in herself so she knows she does not need approval from others to feel good about herself. these deaths are so unnecessary. rip to this young man and shame on his parents.

Sad that he even told his mom ( most adult kids would not) and all she said was that's dumb ( referring to the drinking game) and told him she d call him an hour after it started to check in on him and then she never did that. Also, because he was under the drinking age she could have informed the police, campus security etc. Again he told his mom BEFORE he did it. He told her he didn't want to do it. He told her before he went ( days, hours? ). I get it what you are saying about peer pressure, campus life all true - that is why parenting is so hard between the ages of 16 - 24 you are not physically with your kids and they are "adults" ie kids with opportunities to make adult decisions. But he called his mom....told her how he ws feeling - and all she could say was well that s dumb and I will call you an hour after the drinking starts to see how you are doing. Wake up call to all parents. And fyi she said she never made the 10 pm call. At midnight she was informed that her son was dad. Blame all the things you have no control over or look in the mirror. I thank her for her story and hope the Internet gets the parenting aspect. Unfortuneltly people go right to blaming others. I think their is enough responsibility to go around but as a mother myself I take full responsibility for my actions - not my son s and not society's but my own. Greek life exists in other countries as well complete with the initiation rituals (aka hazing) and it just needs to stop altogether. I don't understand why these schools and organisations even allow this to happen and yet are very strict in the classroom with regards to integrity. These are people's lives we're talking about. Edit: Hazing is also part of dorm life in some cases. So, even if Greek life doesn't exist in that part of the world, hazing is still very possible. Edit 2: I don't condone relaxing rules for integrity in the classroom and getting away with plagiarism and stuff like that. I think when it comes down to safety and life or death situations, parents still have a responsibility. I'm 28 but if I was going to make a life threatening decision my dad would step in, and I would want him to. Otherwise he's there for advice, support and a listening ear. Yes, they need to learn lessons and make decisions for themselves, but if they can't see the dangers in what they're doing, and the parent does, they still have something to teach and responsibility to uphold. Now I don't have children, but I can say I would rather make an executive decision or overstep with my child (adult or otherwise) and have them still be around even if they hate me for it, than to let them make a decision and lose them to it.

Absolute insanity! This was even a student who knew he didn’t want to, even talked to his mom, and STILL went through with it, all to die horribly. Sadly, it shows the immense power of peer pressure, even to the kids who have been warned, talked to, supported by parents to back out. They are right... make this BS a felony, make it not worth the risk. It needs to be too much of a risk for them to even mess around with. So sad. @@cindylou3524 I agree, owning up to responsibility for your own actions is something our species lacks, immensely. I luckily was never one for crowds, big parties or having to be a part of what everyone else was doing... whether it’s due to being an introvert, anti-social, who knows. That said, peer pressure, wanting to be accepted, wanting to belong, liked, whatever that drive is, coupled with a young person’s brain being, well, ill-equipped (prefrontal cortex, the part of brain that helps a person plan ahead, balance risk, & control impulses, is one of the last regions to be fully developed, and doesn’t do so till 25-29 yrs old), is a dangerous combo. Just as we can argue, “he should’ve just said no”, every single “frat bro” in that house, especially the ones who said after the fact “they knew it was too much, they didn’t WANT to do it, but it was tradition”... they ALL should’ve spoken TF up as well. People who have power over others (yes, fraternity & sorority pledge weeks are fueled by power) obviously have the advantage. The fact that this boy told his mom he didn’t want to BEFORE going, and still did it shows the mental BS involved. It had nothing to do with partying and getting drunk and everything to do with proving himself, not wanting to back down or “look weak”. It’s sad AF and even if not ending in death, toxic AF. So, no, I don’t accept the argument, “he should’ve just said no”. When I say “make it a felony”, it’s for proactive measures, to detour hazing rituals like this. It needs to stop, from the frats and sororities to the pledges putting themselves into those stupid situations.

He wasn’t interested in joining a fraternity. He became withdrawn after starting his first year, he was struggling with social anxiety. My oldest daughter attended Oregon State, and did join a sorority. The girls did go out on most weekends, but they didn’t have hazing like the boys seem to. There’s another young man who had the same experience when pledging to a different frat in a different college/state. He too passed away before his so called friends even checked him again an hour or more later. When they carried him home he was lifeless, had soiled himself, and turned blue over thst hour. I can’t believe this crazy ritual is still a thing. Every year, at least one pledge dies. My heart goes out to his parents. His parents are to blame for not instilling character in him. It’s pretty obvious the parents are crappy because the mom KNEW what was going on and did nothing. It’s very clear in this situation that this young man chose to participate in an activity he knew was dangerous and he did it because he lacked the character to say no to peer pressure. Teach your kids, from an early age, to stand up against peer pressure. If anyone tells you to do something you don´t want to do, something you feel isn´t right, don´t do it, don´t be so afraid to be the one who says no, it doesn´t matter who tells you to do it, or if "everyone else" is doing it.

Same! I went there and always thought Greek life wasn’t a big thing at BG compared to say OSU and this story shook me. I knew maybe one girl in a sorority but always understood what frats were all about and found it disgusting. My sis was in Greek life at another school and said they were not allowed booze in the sorority house so the went to the frats to drink. Great. This whole culture needs to make serious changes or be over.

Wait a minute. I am confused. He's 20 years old. He even told his mother he felt forced to participate in a drinking ritual. His mother is like "Let me know how it goes" instead of telling his son to get the hell out of there and she also should have called the police on them. Hazing should never involve FORCING a kid (by the way he is under the age of 21) to drink any alcohol much less 40 shots. That's absurd!

This peer pressure needs to stop. Unless he was actually threatened with possible physical harm or the drinks were forced down his throat he should have been able to say NO! His mom should not have publicly said she forgives them.

It's his own fault. No one forced him to drink, he did it to try to impress his frat bros when he could've walked away. Personal responsibility. When I was in college, I ran into a childhood friend I thought I'd never see again, and he invited me to drink. I didn't take that drink. I also didn't even have time to think about joining a fraternity. The mom didn't do her job either when she didn't stop him from doing the ritual, and not being allowed to leave should be a red flag.

people keep saying the mom is just letting the kid have some independence and make his own decisions. I don't care whether or not my kid complains that I'm not giving them independence, I'd rather have them complain than Dead. He didn't call his other friends or buddies, he called his mom, and usually kids that wants freedom don't even wanna call their parents. This kid was being held hostage while the mom did nothing!

I was Greek in college and loved my experience, but this has got to stop. It’s going to take responsible alums stepping in and babysitting these kids if they want to save Greek organizations. My husband just chaperoned 15 fraternity kids over Spring Break just to make they stayed safe and out of trouble. There are so many hazing incidents that aren’t even reported. Also, so often, the schools Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council do not hold houses responsible. Unfortunately, it takes a death to occur before they get involve.
