Shoppers that are already in the store are allowed to shelter in place. The doors are locked and the employees are to take shelter too. The employees shouldn’t have to risk their lives to let people in to the building during a tornado. In the Joplin tornado of 2011 there were several employees at businesses that died trying to help people get in and take cover. Plus big box stores are the worst place to be in a tornado.

Yes, I listened to the story. They can’t unlock the door and start letting people in. If they do, 1 becomes 20, and the employee still has the responsibility of locking the door. My sister worked for a local chain grocery store. If a tornado warning happened they took people to the refrigerators or freezers in the back. Kept a couple of coats for workers working, and they would give them to the older folks. BUT. They locked the doors before they went into shealter. People were allowed to be of course if they wanted, but were made aware that once you're out, you're out. If there was anyone that was coming to take shealter before they locked the doors and left, they we welcome to join them. They locked the doors because, sadly, since everyone was going to be in shealter, they couldn't allow the doors open because someone may try to come in and steal/loot stuff. I live in tornado country and i can tell u its best to know where you need to go long before a storm. Storm shelters and basements arent commonplace place so take time to figure out the best place to go when the sirens sound off. When a storm is headed your way is the worst time to start looking for shelter
@theresemalmberg955
@theresemalmberg955 29 күн бұрын
Actually you need to know where your safe spot is and be in it BEFORE the sirens or alerts goes off. Especially if you live in an apartment or a mobile home park where there are no shelters. I live in a mobile home park and all my friends know that if there is one thing I pay attention to this time of year, it is the weather. Obsessively. As in checking the forecasts to see what may be coming this way. I also follow Michigan Storm Chasers, and I have a "go" plan. When they mention certain towns 20 miles to my southwest, west, or northwest, I'm out the door heading for my safe spot even though no warning has been issued for my county or my community. That buys me anywhere from 10-20 minutes lead time to get to where I am going. I have learned that if you wait until the phone alert goes off or the siren blows, that is way too late. On 5/7, when the Michigan Storm Chasers said that the storm was over one of these towns and looked like it was intensifying, that was my signal to go. It took about 5 minutes to get to my safe destination and just as I was getting out of my car my phone alert went off. I went into the building as they were herding everyone into the shelter. A few minutes later the siren went off. Had I waited for the official warning, I might not have been able to make it to safety in time--or been able to get into the building I had selected. Right after it went past my town the storm dropped the tornado that hit the FedEx building. I am also a trained and certified Skywarn spotter because I believe very strongly in Ryan Hall's mantra "don't be scared, be prepared." I need to be able to recognize signs of impending severe weather especially if I am on the road. My motto is No Tornado Is Ever Going to Catch Me by Surprise. Ever. I learned that lesson on Palm Sunday 1965 when I was 9 years old. Since then I have watched the evolution of weather forecasting and warning systems go from practically non-existent in 1965 to now we can tell where the tornado is right down to the street level. We can know DAYS in advance if an outbreak is expected and how bad it is likely to be. As far as I am concerned, there's no excuse for being caught off guard. In 1965, yes. In 2024, NO! If you are out shopping, if you are out traveling, if you are camping, or at an outdoor event, YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WEATHER-WISE. Mother Nature has no pity. Mother Nature has no mercy. Therefore you must be on your guard against her at all times.

@@theresemalmberg955 Tornados usually travel northeast so knowing that helps watching the storms. We had a tornado almost touch down on the other side of town and whoever was supposed to sound the alarms got in a discussion on if that qualified as a storm that needed the sirens. Thankfully, when the tornado dropped again a few mins later, it took off away from populated area. But it went 10 miles before hitting a small rural town like a bowling ball making a strike. Yes, knowing when to go to shelter is better than waiting for the sirens cause sometimes the tornado is already doing damage before the sirens sound. In the 70's we had a tornado hit the town and my folks were so accustomed to watching the sky they predicted the storm early in the day. By ti.e it came in the evening, they had told all neighbor kids they couldn't come over and why. They had fed the family dinner and kept us kids home all day and got radios, flashlights, blankets ect ready. There's a great deal more the weatherman knows but also knowing how to watch the sky and being prepared days in advance is what saves lives. Always be aware of the weather

Some parents were very upset we wouldn’t release their children or let them go to their children during a tornado warning that occurred around dismissal time.

If you’ve ever seen the video of what the Joplin, MO tornado did to the Walmart there you’d understand why Walmart may not have wanted people to shelter there, the store was totaled and people, including employees lost their lives. That being said, I think someone there, most likely the store manager, made a decision that might not align with Walmart’s policy. I’ve never heard of a store of any size refusing to shelter people.

You knew that Tornadoes were coming, but you chose to drive around and then expect Walmart to protect you? You should have been an adult and gone to the storm shelter. Walmart had all the shoppers shelter INSIDE the rear area of the store and lock the doors. Structural integrity is important in tornadoes and open doors hurt that integrity. Obviously these unprepared people had enough time to drive to another location. I grew up in tornado county and we listened to the weather authorities and went to the shelter or a friend’s basement. Our problem is that people expect everyone else to take care of them in an emergency, when they’ve made bad choises.

In most cases for tornados it happens without warnings and if there is it's 5 minutes of time. There obviously weren't any storm shelters in their area otherwise they would have gone to it... Maybe you should be a adult and stop with the smart ass remarks because it's obvious that you know nothing about tornados....

@@MagicalWingLT I would normally agree with you but, the storm had been talked about for at least FOUR days. The day of the storm from dawn until the tornadoes touching down, emergency broadcasts were on the radio, television and internet. I believe, from what I have seen, the tornado was on the ground for a long time before entering the city. There are storm cellars in that area. I grew up all over the South and spent many nights in them. My concern is that, just like happened in Joplin, people will continue to ignore tornado warnings and emergencies and then rely on other people to save them. Walmart does not have a responsibility to save anyone, they do it anyway. Opening a door during a tornado emergency might have well weakened the building killing the 50 plus people inside of the store. I didn’t like mom’s attitude, nor the 35 year old “kids.” I am not sure I believe the, since they could not even say if the employee was a man or woman and refused to identify this phantom “store” that took them in. Wouldn’t you be singing the praises of the store that saved you? I am sure that Walmart will come up with a video.

FYI, big box stores are not good shelter during a tornado. There are a blue million little storefronts right down below the WM in Columbia, and any one of them would have been better shelter.

Is Walmart suddenly responsible for everyone's safety? Get back in your car and drive away from the storm.

What's wrong with you? Are you just stupid about storms with baseball size hail and an approaching tornado, or are you just without any decency at all? Just so you know, if you are working in a building open to the public, and people need shelter from a storm, you are responsible to let them in. Most people would let people suddenly sheltering from a storm into any building in that case. That's just the way it goes with smart and decent people --- which the country used to be comprised of. I am amazed at what has happened to people's minds, but Jesus said it in the Bible, "Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24: 11-12).
