Family shares story of son with rare Angelman Syndrome

Governor Malloy has declared Saturday, April 25 as "Angelman Syndrome Awareness Day" in Connecticut. Angelman Syndrome is a rare neuro-genetic disorder that affects one in every 15,000 live births. Those who suffer from the disorder have developmental delays, lack of speech, walking and balance disorders, and they often suffer from seizures.

My best friend's younger brother has Angelmans Syndrome, and it's so sad. I constantly hear stories of her brother having seizures because he stubbed his toe and he's already ~9 and he can't properly speak. He's such a sweet and lovely boy though - he always waves at me and gives me hugs.

My cousin has Angelman Syndrome he’s 37 now. He can’t talk or walk. When we were little I remember he use to say mama and eat eat. He use to get around the house by crawling but the older he’s gotten plus other medical issues he’s lost all of his mobility.

I have angelman syndrome to,and I'm 30 yrs old..... I have seizures to.... It gets better, alot of speech therapy, physical therapy. Eat alot of potassium, bananas, anything with alot of potassium....

One thing they have in common outside of their diagnosis is the breathtaking beauty in all those faces Their joy is contagious I have never seen a syndrome that has a common denominator of blatant angelic beauty

Normally we inherit one copy of every chromosomes from each of our parents,but here the baby inherits both copy of chr.15 from the father only.So,once born there can not be any cure of this disease.🙁

Paternal disomy accounts for only about 2-5% of Angelman syndromes. 90% of Angelman syndrome cases are linked to either an intragenic mutation or a maternal allele mutation; with CRISPR maybe there is some hope.

My mnemonic for this is: Mom and Dad married at 15. FatherWilli (Prader-Willi; paternal deletion) makes me hungry (hperphagia) and AngelMama (maternal deletion) makes me happy (happy puppet syndrome).

Even my son has Angle man syndrome and doctor told there is no cure now. So we need to provide therapies to make him independent. Hope you accept the fact and do your best make him happy.

As someone with severe depression. This is a terrible way of thinking. Imagine this kid saying “I wish I had depression.” That’s what you sound like.

I know that having depression is a constant battle but having angelman's syndrome doesnt make children happy. They just look happy. Mnay children will still smile and jump and flap their arms even whn they broke a bone or are being severely bullied.

You realise that even while sad angry or scared you will ALLWAYS send signals of happiness it doesn't release dopamine your brain is trapped in a body that can't move properly and can only show happiness feigned or not.
