I just watched this, almost 7 years after it was posted! It is still an excellent discussion of this FTM feature, which I have definitely been under utilizing. If you still monitor this page -- THANK YOU, Crista!

Learning from this video - I find that with so many of the videos, that as I progress in my learning, that if I come back, I learn or understand to a deeper level. Just recently realized the need for fixing locations and how to. Have 11K+ places in there so no clue how long that will take. But I am learning and doing.

I'm so pleased that the videos are helpful for you, Paula. And, I totally get it - learning is a process that we can come back to over and over.

Erick - Before you bump the # and street up to the details line, copy the GPS info. Once the place is resolved, highlight it on your list and paste that info back in. That should preserve the specific map location. (Crista)

Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me to really cleanup my places in FTM. I didn't even know that was something I needed to do but I immediately created a task to review these and I just finished the first round of my cleanup. Over 200 items were unverified so it was quite an effort but once finished (as you stated) I had a few more hint leafs appear for people in my tree. Next, I'll need to search to see if you have a video on Sources as I just noticed that mine are kind of a mess also. The actual citations make sense to me, but the source list is something I struggle with (how broad or detailed I need to make them so I can reuse them for multiple citations).

Crista, there is another reason that some of your place names might need to be resolved. If your FTM file was initially imported from a version prior to 2008, you might have things in the place field that aren't places at all. In the pre-2008 versions, the location and description were lumped together in the same field. So for someone's occupation, you might have put "farmer." It will show up in the newer versions of FTM as a location instead of a description. Other fact names might have other kinds of odd things that don't belong in the location list. The newer versions of FTM have separate fields for place and description. To resolve these odd entries, they must be moved from the location field to the description field.

Also I had adding some GEDCOMs [years ago - when I thought that was quicker and helpful - HA!] and things will show up in weird places.

Have a question, on a census, list place name as Rural area from a city the city name is there, should I record as Rural as a unincorporated city or just use the city name?

Boy have I got a lot of work to do haha. Crista, can the 'suggested place names' in the resolve place name box be altered. I am in New Zealand and lot of the place names are doubled up ie Blenheim, Marlborough, Marlborough, New Zealand or Greymouth, Grey, West Coast, New Zealand, New Zealand. Often cities like Auckland appear as Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. Would love to correct these. Can you help please.

I'm trying to resolve places in FTM for Mac 2. I have standarized some places but it does not merge my associated people under the standarized place name (the number of places has not changed, they just have the same name now) do I need to do something to merge them?

So what about places like "Lanyon High School, Lanyon, Webster, Iowa, USA"? FTM doesn't recognize Lanyon, but if I move both up to the place detail, the result in the Place dropdown is it lists under USA => Iowa => Webster both "Lanyon High School, Lanyon" and "Lanyon" separately (I have people connected to the town in general). Resulting in not really helpful still.

What is the difference between a place that has a checkmark and another place that has a "scroll" looking icon?

You should consider doing these videos at a higher quality. The highest quality available for this video is 480 pixels, which results in all the names being so blurry they cannot be read. I think this is important especially when the whole point of the video is about the names.

Thanks, Victor. This particular video is about five and a half years old. The more recent videos have been recorded in a higher quality video format. I am, as needed, going back through some of the old content and re-recording.

Hi Crista Cowan how are you, I really want to learn more about my fathers and mothers history etc., my question to you is I'm from (Greece) will this Family tree maker/Ancestry work for me since I am Greek and was born there just like the rest of my family. will I be able to find information because I'm from Europe. I am willing to invest my time and money to do so, if that won't work then I would like to know if I should continue this process or will I be wasting my time, are you also affiliated with Ancestry?....what is the cost for both. thanks! Sorry I forgot to add, should I be writing the info (family tree maker 2014) in Greek or English will there be a problem understanding the Greek Language?

Hi Crista, appreciate the video and all. The one thing that is disappointing is that when you take a street address in the form of: ## street, city, state and use your up arrow to move the "## street" to the description and resolve the rest of it, it takes the format: ## street, city, county, state, country. Which works great from an organizational purpose, however, from a mapping perspective, FTM can no longer pinpoint the home location on the map, which sort of defeats the purpose.

I am considering getting FTM, but I have not yet, because I'm worried it will not work well for Norway, which is where most people in my tree are from. For my Norwegian ancestors, place names generally are farm names located in local parishes, which are located it larger parishes, which are located in counties. Sometimes municipalities are listed, but that is not very common. Would FTM be able to manage such a thing?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 7 жыл бұрын
Victor - Great question. In FTM you control how place names are entered. There is a place authority dictionary that provides suggestions but it is not comprehensive. Just enter the location the way you want it entered and the system will remember it for the next time you enter it.
@Brillig2
@Brillig2 7 жыл бұрын
Is it possible to edit the authority dictionary?

Essentially, that's what you are doing when you create your own entries.

Can't having the modern location instead of the historical one mess with hints? If the hint system is looking for your ancestors using the modern location won't it be directed away from records with the historical location?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. And, the answer is yes. But the opposite is also true. For example, I have ancestors born in what is now West Virginia but was, at the time of their birth, Virginia. If I was searching for a birth record, I would likely want to search in Virginia unless, of course, the records for their county were turned over to West Virginia. On each of the censuses, they reported their birth place as either Virginia or West Virginia (even though no such place existed at the time) depending on who responded. So, I always recommend that people either record the current location in the location field and put the historic location in the description field and/or notes OR vice versa. But, whichever way you choose to do it, be consistent for your own sake. Either way will almost always require that you search in multiple locations. Hope that makes sense. (~Crista)

I can't understand why on earth would I want to use default place names, that are almost always wrong for countries like mine, instead of using place names manualy defined by me, that I know are correct! Is there a way to manualy organize the places in an hierarchical way? That would be fantastic but I can't do it in family tree maker... From my experience, the manual way is always better as it gives you the freedom to do everything correctely.
