Common problem with 1st gen CRVs is the dipstick tube comes loose after several years. It is a press fit, so fix options are limited.

My dude! Thank you so much for this video! I have an issue with this which caused oil to spurt out and reek like my car was about to catch fire. Horribly terrifying but I'm over the moon to see that I can solve this problem myself with limited mechanical experience. Thanks bro! 🙏

Thanks for this - I knew that I couldn't have been the only one to have this problem. I was careful to make sure that it went back in all the way down because if it was too high in the hole I might next overfill with oil as the dipstick would not measure correctly.

Thank you! The shaft on my 2001 CR-V pulled out when I checked the oil while on a trip and had 350 miles until getting home. It was tricky but I managed to get it reseated right at the gas pump where I was. I'm relieved to learn that it was only pressure seated to begin with, as I worried about it popping out when under pressure while driving home. But all was well. I checked out a few other videos and was about to pay my mechanic to do the job until I found yours, which put the job into clear perspective. I just ordered a borescope for about $30 and a tube of sealant.... all for about the cost of 1/4 of an hour mechanic's time. I plan to paint the top end of the shaft with a bright high heat paint to assist with checking the oil in the future, as it is so difficult/frustrating to find the hole with the dipstick.

Glad to hear it. I know what you mean about finding the hole--- the paint is a good idea!

There's no need to remove the heat shield as I found out you can access the hole from the left side there's enough room to get your hand in there

Recently just happened to me... Difference is. I think mine is just cock-eyed side ways in there..I didn't have the entire part pull out .. seems as if that part that holds the dipstick has some way gotten sideways. So Im gonna have to screw the shield off to see where it is. This video did help SO MUCH. THX

At the dealer I worked at another Honda tech showed me a trick where he took a drill bit starter punch (spring loaded style) and just dimpled the part that goes in the hole all the way around. That plus a little Honda bond to seal it. FIPG from Toyota is better IMO but it worked. We literally had to pound them back into the block.

Great camerawork. Did yu use some sort of bore scope or fibre optic attachment? How about a video on the hassle of getting the heat shield bounting bolts off!!
@FamilyFriendlyDIY

Thanks. Yes, I used a Depstech borescope for the shot into the tube hole. ... Ha ha ... the heat shield wasn't too bad for me, but I live in a rust free area. I can imagine it might be next to impossible for some folks though. Thanks for the comment J EADIE!

It's my daughters. It's running good now. Just did fuel pump, replaced a rocker, valve adjustment, oil pan gasket, valve-cover gasket, engine coolant temperature sensor. Got a couple more videos on this one coming soon. Thanks for the comments, Craigie!

Do they sell the dipstick tube at the dealership? Where can I get a replacement?
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
It does not look like Honda sells it. You might have to get one from a junkyard or used parts place like LKQ.

You might have to go to a salvage yard, Felicia, if you can't find a used one online. Here's a site a lot of people use when looking for stuff like this locations.lkqpickyourpart.com/search I hope you find what you need!

@@FamilyFriendlyDIY I just noticed that I don't even see mine.. the dipstick is out but the part the dipstick goes in .I can't see it. I think it's side ways cock-eyed in there..I'm gonna have to take the shield off .. few months ago I accidentally pulled the dipstick and the other part out .....today I was checking my oil and noticed that the dipstick has NOT been in the hole.. evidently it's just been sitting and evidently the other part is sideways .. mine is a 2001.. thank God I noticed it today and I pray I didn't damage anything

@@aikoonehj8819 Don't fret, as long as your oil light didn't come on, you should still be fine. This is apparently a common problem on these and obviously more common as they age---but they're still great cars! All the best wit yours, and thanks for the comment!
