When you mentioned the half-relationships bit, it made me realize that all the immediate relationships I have on my moms side are half cousins or aunt/uncle. I knew it, but never gave it much thought since I grew up playing with my cousins on this side of my family and even all lived together for a time.

Hi. Great video. I like that the cms and percentage are interchangeable, that whichever one you enter, the other correlates.

One thing to watch out for is relationship changes when using percentage DNA vs total cM. For eg ancestry gives both the percentage of DNA shared and the shared cM. I have a relative on ancestry with 18% shared DNA and 1277 shared cM. If I put in 1277 on the shared cM tool, the relationship chart shows the possible relationships we might have. However if I use the 18% percentage ancestry gives me, this changes the cM from 1277 to 1337 and in turn changes the possible relationships. So this tool is not very accurate for relationships in the close ranges, hard to know if you should use the cM or percentage from ancestry on this tool.

I have been using this tool for the past 2 days for someone. They have a mystery DNA at 1212cm. This seems like a 1st cousin...but DNA painter says great grandparent..but my other samples for 1C is from 800 to 1000cm which are 100% verified. So is this an error for DNA painter.

Great info as always. I haven't used this but have added it to my list. Thanks! Could you give an example where knowing the approximate age or generation comes in? If the match is unknown (and there's no current picture), how would you know or guesstimate approximate age? Also, I love the fact that it uses both % and cMs but I can't remember (at least for the sites I've uploaded to over the years), seeing % being used. I've uploaded from Ancestry to MyHeritage, FTdna, LivingDNA, GEDmatch, and I think FindMyPast (haven't been up there in quite a while but I know they're linked with LivingDNA. I've also tested with 23&Me. Is it any of those or one of the others? Thanks again!

23&me shows % although when you click for more details or thankfully tells you cm To find a matches age or might help to look at their tree, look at their profile or do some genealogical research. That might help but sometimes you just haven't got a way of knowing other then asking. It's usually only an issue on very close matches

@@sie4431 Thanks! Yep, I agree on the asking and that's very helpful on with it mainly an issue for very close matches. That's a relief. Otherwise, as I'm sure you know, a tree and/or profile for DNA matches with either or both definitely is in the minority. Thanks for the heads-up on 23me! I haven't used my kit up there for anything but matches up til now so that's very helpful.

Have you had a look at the cm solver tool? The creator seems to think it accounts for endogamy/ pedigree collapse.

DNA painter (and autosomal matches) have helped me knock down brick walls and to help solve 2 out of 16 GG Grandparent lines (all other lines 14/16 were already solved) that I had worked on for 41 years and finally solve and find the biological families of these 2 lines that were otherwise unsolvable.

Hi there, Seems like you have a statistics background. I have some cousins that have ran several non randomized dna comparisons using 23 and me with a potential 5th cousin with no match and they have concluded that this proves that certain potential 4th great grandparents are not related. To me this makes me cringe knowing that a low % of actual 5th cousins will show as a match. My question is... How do you best prove using statistical methods prove non relationship? Is this a probability problem? Is it a box model problem? Could a hypothesis test be conducted? For example we could be 95% confident that they are not related. I'm not sure that is possible because we don't get all the cM data from the general population for all the tests ran, but only available for the "matches".

There's always the exceptions. My ggf b 1860 fathered 1st child when he was 18 & last child at 71. (Two wives) My gf fathered 1st child when he was 19 & last child at 46. (Again two wives) My Dad was 23 when I was born. I had 1st cousins ranging in age from 20 yrs older to 16 yrs younger than I am. I have 2nd cousins from 45 yrs older to who knows how much younger. I don't have all ggf's 2nd wife's grandchildren in my research. A 20 yr cutoff would not be helpful. Maybe not even using 25 yrs. Even though ggf was born in 1860, he may still have grandchildren living.

There are indeed always exceptions, as you pointed out. The point is, we start with averages for our unknown research and then expand out from there. That way we're working methodically rather than spinning our wheels and getting no where.
