“King of Djembe” tells the story of Famoudou Konate, a great master of African music and culture, who, after a long international career, returns to his homeland, in the Republic of Guinea. The film follows the surroundings of the party marking his 80th birthday and Famoudou's reunion with other great masters and friends.
Famoudou is one of those responsible for spreading Djembe and Mandeng culture throughout the world, and was a central element in the history of the African Ballets, an important cultural, social and political event for the Pan African movement and the independence of the countries of the continent.

This is my Master of 20 - 30 years now. And he still is. He's my friend and master. Married me and my wife, Fanta. He told me all the history and some secrets of djembe and dunu. Whan Famoudou speaks... we all listen and try to know not only what he is saying and what he finds important for us, his students, to need to know. With every breath he takes, with all of his words and his energy... no-one in my life has impacted the course of my life as Famoudou Konaté, my wife Fanta and the Keita family in Simbaya Gare, Guinea. I love you all with all of my heart and my soul. You have helped me be the man I am today. I understand. I understand what I can and new exploration with the drumming opens up new understanding almost every time I teach a class (stage) in the US for my people. I love them all so much as You did with Me. A true master of the Malinke djembe, music, chants and songs, melodies and dance. Love you forever Famoudou. I love you; You have done your work here and please be free and rest now.
